Chapter 3

Auteur: Cool Husky
Holding the pregnancy test report, I was completely stunned.

It had the official stamp of the city hospital, and the doctor who signed it was my junior, Daphne Bailey. I knew her character well. She wasn't the type to falsify a report.

I looked at Amelia's belly. It wasn't obvious yet, but there was a noticeable baby bump.

Besides, she had recently gained weight. She had always been obsessed with her figure, so unless she was pregnant, she would never have allowed herself to put on weight.

Though deeply confused, I couldn't stop myself from reaching out to touch her belly. "How far along are you?"

Before Mom passed, her dying wish was for us to have a baby soon, and I promised her that we would.

Dad died in an accident when I was a kid. Mom raised me alone, worked herself into chronic illnesses, and died before she could ever enjoy life.

Having lost both parents at such a young age, I had always longed to start a family of my own.

Amelia had made the same promise before the wedding, but once we were married, she turned into a total workaholic.

Once, she got pregnant by accident and had an abortion behind my back. When I found out and asked why she hadn't talked to me about it, she just said she was too young and didn't want a baby to drag her down.

She told me to give her three years and promised she would give me a baby then, so from that day on, I never pushed her and stopped bringing it up altogether.

Now, on our third-year mark, it seemed like she was finally keeping her word.

I was ready to tell her about one of the villas I had bought before the marriage. I would give it to her as a pregnancy gift and two more after the baby was born, one for her parents and the other for her and the baby.

As for her affair, I could forgive her for the sake of the baby.

But something about the way she was reacting to the pregnancy felt off. There was something even stranger about her attitude toward me.

She avoided my touch and wrapped her arms tight around her belly. "I'm three months along now. I was just too careless to notice."

"Three months?"

My voice cracked. The thought of giving her a villa instantly vanished.

Three months ago… That was when Zayden first joined the company. They soon became inseparable and frequently went on business trips together.

Amelia barely came home, and on the rare nights she did, she always had an excuse to avoid intimacy.

At first, I thought she was just exhausted. I even felt sorry for her and swallowed my needs, taking cold showers just to cool off.

It wasn't until much later that I realized she was in love with another man. She was so obsessed with her new man that it seemed, in her eyes, I didn't even exist anymore.

For three months, I endured it and waited to see if she would come back to her senses.

I dropped hint after hint, reminding her to turn back before it was too late. But she never listened, and if anything, she started to despise me more.

She even started belittling me just to win Zayden's favor.

Three years of marriage meant nothing compared to a fling with an assistant of three months. It was ironic how fragile our relationship was.

"What's wrong? Are you saying that the baby's not yours? I've never slept with another man aside from you!"

Panic was written all over Amelia's face as she scrambled to prove that the baby was mine. The fact that she felt the need to defend herself only confirmed that she was hiding something.

We were husband and wife. There was no doubt that she should be pregnant with my baby, but the fact that she was so defensive spoke volumes.

Honestly, it was no surprise that she was nervous. She'd barely slept at home in the past three months. She would either be traveling for work or sleeping at the office.

We had only slept together once, and that was two months ago, the night I got drunk on Mom's death anniversary.

For once, Amelia came home and stayed with me.

When I woke up the next morning, we were lying in the same bed with our clothes in disarray. She acted spoiled, complaining that I had been too rough and hurt her.

But I couldn't recall anything from that night, so all I could do was let her complain.

I ended up buying her a luxury watch to make it up to her.

As the thought crossed my mind, I quickly said, "Of course, I trust you. I believe the baby's mine, so don't worry. I'll take good care of you both."

After coaxing her into the bedroom to sleep, I entered the bathroom alone, closed the door, and called Daphne.

"I need a favor, Daphne. Could you check if anything's off about Amelia's pregnancy?"

Unless I dealt with Zayden, a despicable lowlife like him would be like a ticking time bomb. He would be at my door looking for trouble the moment he was released from prison.Using Amelia to eliminate him was the perfect solution to kill two birds with one stone.A year into our marriage, Daphne got pregnant. I visited Mom's grave with her and knelt before the headstone, tears streaming down my face."You're going to have a grandchild soon, Mom. You don't have to worry that I'd be alone anymore. I now have a wife, a baby, and a family."Daphne held me close as I cried into her shoulder. The wind was strong that day. Worried she would catch a cold, I insisted she wait in the car while I stayed behind and kept Mom company at her grave.Just as I was about to leave, I noticed fresh flowers at the grave. Someone had just been here.I didn't have many relatives, and we had drifted apart after all these years. Aside from Daphne and me, Amelia was likely the only person who would know

I listened for a while before it finally hit me that Amelia was the madwoman speaking. Two years had passed since I last saw her. Her voice was rough and hoarse, a far cry from the delicate woman I once knew.I felt a surge of complicated emotions, but I knew that was exactly what she deserved. Her life had fallen apart without me.For Daphne's safety, I tried my best to calm her. "You had your happy moments too. When we got married, I wasn't as wealthy as I am right now, so I planned to give you the villas as a gift after we had a baby. "And our wedding was simple because my mom was dying."The thought of Mom brought tears to my eyes, and I sincerely continued, "I'm still grateful to you for fulfilling my mom's final wish."Amelia lowered her knife, and her face was streaked with tears as she looked at me. "Mason, you're not lying, are you? You used to love me, didn't you?"I nodded. "I wouldn't have married you if I didn't."A flash of manic joy crossed her eyes, and she sud

Suddenly, Daphne came running back and hurled another brick at Zayden."Come at me instead! Don't even think about touching my man before you deal with me!"He flew into a rage and charged at her with the dagger before driving it straight into her back.A sharp, agonizing pain ripped through my chest as I screamed, "Daphne!""Mason, stay strong… and live…" Daphne gasped out those few words with great difficulty before she slowly collapsed to the ground. My eyes were bloodshot as I grabbed the brick off the sidewalk and aimed it straight at Zayden's head. "Zayden! I'll kill you!"Just as I raised the brick, a commanding voice shouted, "Freeze!"A squad of police officers swarmed in and tackled Zayden, while I slowly lowered the hand holding the brick. After scrambling over to Daphne, I gathered her in my arms and sobbed with tears and snot streaming down my face. "Daphne! Why would you do something so stupid?"She reached up with her bloody hands, cupped my cheeks, and comfor

Actually, the safety clauses for the company transfer were Mom's idea before she died. Before we got married, Amelia was open about the fact that she wanted a company of her own. Mom warned me to be careful and reminded me that even if I gave it to her, I had to attach clauses that would protect me.Back then, I thought she was overthinking it, but I secretly did it anyway just to put her mind at ease. I never imagined that just three years into the marriage, Amelia would show her true colors as a selfish, greedy woman. It seemed like Mom was a better judge of character than I was. After the divorce, I filed criminal charges against Amelia and Zayden for bigamy. They had held a wedding, lived together, and she was pregnant. On top of that, the whole scandal had blown up online, causing serious public backlash. As a result, they were each sentenced to two years in prison.Amelia's sentence was suspended since she was pregnant, but she still lost her freedom for two years.I rega

I quietly recorded the scene, though my heart bled thinking about my marital assets. For my birthday, Amelia had given me a 50-dollar plushie, but she spent 50 million dollars on an engagement ring for Zayden. It was ironic, really.I swallowed my disgust and warned them. "Amelia and I aren't divorced yet."She immediately tossed a pre-prepared set of divorce papers in front of me and snapped in contempt, "You want a divorce, don't you? Here you go! I would've dumped your pathetic ass ages ago if you hadn't been somewhat useful!"I picked up the papers and skimmed through the contents, only to realize that she hadn't given me a single penny.Furious, I ripped them right on the spot and coldly warned, "I'll see you in court, Amelia. You'll regret this.""Regret?" she mocked as I turned around to leave. "Never in this lifetime, Mason. You're officially useless to me now that Mr. Lange has signed the contract."After leaving the office, I hired a lawyer and filed for divorce.Amel

Zayden, ever the schemer, had pieced things together through hints and sly prodding. He eventually learned that Amelia and I were husband and wife. Still, he assumed that I was just some kept man living off her and never missed the chance to humiliate me at work. Now, the few executives who knew the truth finally snapped."This is too much, Mr. Brooks!""They've gone way too far! Even if you can tolerate this, I can't!""Exactly! Let's get up there and teach that pair of lowlifes a lesson!"They clenched their fists, fuming and ready to storm the stage to teach Amelia and Zayden a lesson.I held them back. "Violence is for fools. Don't worry; I'll make them regret this."Despite my warnings, they seethed and muttered curses under their breath at Zayden. I remained silent and secretly recorded the couple's passionate kissing display. After what felt like an eternity, Zayden finally let go of Amelia. He shot me a provocative look and said, "Are you feeling jealous, Mason? I not
