Chapter 3

Author: Barky Biscuit
To punish me, Vito replaced me with Giuliana at the Corti family's annual gala.

She wore my custom gown, looking radiant under the chandeliers, while I sat alone in the corner like an outsider watching their absurd performance.

Vito walked her around, introducing her to every guest. "This is Giuliana, my… friend."

A vague title, but enough for everyone to understand her position. The guests kept glancing between us.

Halfway through the evening, Giuliana approached me with a wine glass, swaying gracefully. She stopped a few steps away, right in front of Mamma's oil portrait hanging on the wall behind me.

I'd commissioned Emaly's most renowned painter for that piece, wanting her to watch over me always.

She raised her glass with a smile. "Madre, sitting here alone must be so dull. Let me toast you."

Just then, she stumbled. The red wine spilled from her glass in a perfect arc, splashing across Mamma's portrait. Crimson liquid slid down her gentle face.

Giuliana let out an exaggerated shriek. "Oh no! I'm so sorry, Madre. I didn't mean to…"

Apologies poured from her mouth while malice gleamed in her eyes. Rage blinded me.

I shot to my feet and slapped her hard across the face. The entire ballroom fell silent. Everyone froze at the sudden violence.

Giuliana clutched her cheek and stared at me in disbelief as tears welled up. "You… you hit me?"

I met her gaze with ice in my eyes. "Hit you? I'm going to kill you."

I lunged forward and grabbed her throat, slamming her against the wall. In that moment, I forgot everything. I only wanted this woman who'd defiled Mamma's memory to pay.

"Stop!"

The shout snapped me back to reality. Vito strode over and shoved me aside, pulling the trembling Giuliana behind him protectively.

The force sent me stumbling backward into the dining table. My wrist cracked against the corner, sending pain shooting through my arm.

"Apologize to Giuliana."

I stared at him in shock. "What did you say?"

He repeated each word slowly. "I said, apologize to her."

I looked at him, at the woman putting on such a pitiful act in his arms, and felt the absurdity of it all. I screamed. "She's the one who needs to apologize! She deliberately destroyed Mamma's portrait!"

Vito's expression darkened further. "All I saw was you acting like a wild woman at my gala, challenging my authority in front of everyone."

He swept his gaze across the watching guests, barely concealing his anger.

"Guards."

Two Soldati stepped forward immediately.

"Take the Madre to her room. No one visits her without my permission."

His words hit me like a physical blow. I couldn't believe these words came from the man I'd loved for so many years. The two guards seized my arms with bruising force.

I thrashed wildly. "Let go of me! Vito! You can't do this to me!"

In my struggle, I lost my balance and crashed into a massive marble column. Searing pain exploded in my forehead. Warm liquid trickled down my cheek.

The world spun before my eyes. In the last moment before I lost consciousness, I saw Vito's cold, indifferent expression and the triumphant sneer curling Giuliana's lips.

Darkness swallowed me whole.

The rain was pounding down late that night when someone knocked on the DeLuca castle gates. The security feed showed Vito soaked to the bone, kneeling outside. He'd brought no men with him. His once proud spine curved forward now, making him look like a beaten dog.Leo glanced at me. "Want to see him?"I set down my book and stood calmly. "See him? Why wouldn't I? I've waited too long for this moment."The gates opened slowly.Vito lifted his head as rain streamed down his pale face. When he saw me walking out with Leo's support, hope flickered in his eyes before pain swallowed it whole."Gia…"His voice came out hoarse and broken, barely audible over the rain. I held an umbrella and stood on the steps looking down at him, just like I'd looked at him years ago when he lay dying at the docks. Only back then it was pity, and now it was indifference."Mr. Corti, outsiders aren't welcome here."Vito crawled forward on his knees, reaching for the hem of my dress. Leo stepped forwar

The days at the DeLuca castle felt surreally peaceful.Leo kept his word. He hired the world's best rehabilitation specialists and accompanied me through brutal, monotonous training sessions every day. Even when my fingers managed the slightest bend, he praised me generously.News about Vito kept flowing in steadily. The explosion that night had destroyed a third of the Corti family's weapons cache.Vito went ballistic and launched a rabid purge across Emaly. He put a 100-million-dollar bounty on Leo's head and offered a reward for dragging me back."Scared?"One afternoon, while I sat in the garden enjoying the sun, Leo handed me a glass of water. I shook my head and took the glass with my left hand."I'm not afraid of him. I just hate how stupid I used to be. Though I imagine things aren't going well for him right now."A cold smile curved my lips. Vito probably forgot who'd been managing the family's underground smuggling network all these years. All the secret shipping route

The car raced along winding mountain roads, leaving our pursuers far behind. The smell of blood hung faintly in the air.I turned to Leo. The bloodstain on his shoulder kept spreading."You're hurt."I tried to check his wound, but my cumbersome cast got in the way. Leo pressed my hand down gently. His face was pale, but his eyes burned bright."Flesh wound. Nothing serious. More importantly, welcome to my world, Gia."Eventually, we pulled up to a castle perched on a cliff edge. This was DeLuca territory, a place Vito could never touch. When I stepped out, my legs trembled and nearly gave out. Without hesitation, Leo bent and scooped me into his arms."Put me down. I can walk." I squirmed uncomfortably."Don't move." His voice came out soft but left no room for argument. "You're my prize. I get to decide how to handle you."Despite his possessive words, he angled his uninjured shoulder for me to lean against. Inside the entrance hall, a waiting medical team rushed forward.H

Beams from dozens of flashlights surrounded us instantly. Vito stood there in his tailored suit, a black Beretta in his hand. Behind him, dozens of armed Soldati fanned out.Giuliana stood at his side, her face twisted into a vicious grin. "I knew the Madre was up to something, sneaking around. It turns out she's here meeting her lover!"Vito ignored Giuliana's shrieking. His cold eyes locked onto me. "Come here."It was just two words, but they carried suffocating weight.Leo instinctively shifted to shield me. I raised my hand and lightly touched Leo's arm, signaling him to stay calm. Our interaction sent Vito over the edge. He raised his gun, the barrel aimed directly at Leo's forehead."Leo, you must have a death wish for touching what's mine."Leo showed no panic, only scorn. "Vito, she's not your prisoner. She has every right to choose who she leaves with.""You're dead!"Vito pulled back the slide. The air turned deadly."Gia, I'm only saying this once. Come here. Come

On the night of the Saint's Day gala, the estate blazed with light.I wore the black velvet gown Vito personally selected for me, my right hand suspended in a custom silk sling across my chest. The look was fragile with a sickly kind of beauty.Vito seemed pleased with my appearance of dependence. He walked me around, accepting hollow congratulations from guests on all sides."The Don and Madre are so devoted to each other.""Looks like those rumors were all lies. The Corti family is unshakeable."I kept a practiced smile plastered on my face while mentally counting down the minutes. Giuliana showed up as expected, draped in a garish red sequined dress like a snake that just swallowed its prey.Around her neck hung another necklace, this one even more expensive. It was a ruby piece that was one of Don Lorenzo's heirlooms, something that should have been locked in the family vault. It seemed Vito had given it to her. Giuliana sauntered over with a wine glass, swaying her hips.

That sentence set Vito off completely. He lunged down, planting his hands on either side of me and trapping me in his shadow. He laughed coldly. "So what? You think that gives you the right to lecture me and meddle in my personal life?"Gia, don't overestimate yourself. Right now, you're just a dog living off my scraps."His face hovered so close I could smell the nauseating mix of alcohol and another woman's perfume clinging to him. I closed my eyes, unable to look at him anymore.I forced the word through clenched teeth. "Get out."His body went visibly rigid. A fresh wave of fury consumed him, but ultimately, he did nothing. He straightened up, smoothed his disheveled collar, and tossed out one final line. "You'd better behave yourself."Then he stormed out without looking back.On the fifth day of my confinement, I finally found my chance. During the gap between maid shifts, I used a hidden hairpin to pry loose a tile under the floorboards beneath my bed. A miniature satell
