Chapter 8

Hazel

I spent the past night wondering about Conner and how he found out about my pregnancy. Currently, my physical symptoms hadn't appeared yet, and I dealt with my constant wave of nausea in secret. I also did my best to mask my pregnancy scent from his wolf nose, yet somehow he managed to find out. Even Alexander wasn't able to pull off such feat, just who on earth was this man?!

Getting up from where I laid, I proceeded to the bathroom to get myself cleaned up. And after that went down to see my mother, before coming up for breakfast.

It was my usual morning routine ever since we got here. I was getting used to the place, and the maids and guards around were also getting used to me. They had been surprised by my sudden Intrusion intrusion into their lives. But thanks to Conner's words, they were warming up to me.

Speaking of Conner, I wanted to have a word with him today, but I didn't want it to seem as though I was obsessed with seeing him. The air around us was awkward the first time, but I wanted to straighten things out, and inquire of how he knew about my pregnancy.

I paced up and down the hallway racking my head for a suitable excuse to meet with him. Although the air around him wasn't as toxic as Alexander's, I still feared him for some reason I hadn't found out yet.

Just when I was about to give up and leave everything up to fate, my perfect excuse came walking right in front of me.

"Emily.." I called out to the head maid. One glance at her and I could tell she was going to serve Alpha Conner his breakfast, she was the only person who was authorized to do so.

"Hazel? Is there a problem?" Emily was super direct that it was fearful at times. She had no time to waste on irrelevant discussions or exchanges. It was understandable when you put the nature of who she served under consideration. Alpha Conner was not someone who loved to be kept waiting.

"No, there's no problem at all." I answered heartedly. She raised a brow in suspicion at my answer. If there was no problem then why the hell did I stop her? Taking the hint in her eyes, I immediately began to state my business with her.

"I just wanted to serve the Alpha his breakfast today, do you think that's possible?" I asked.

"Unfortunately not." Came a sharp, firm reply. "The maids here are under strict rules not to play with the Alpha's meal. I'm sorry but I cannot allow you to serve this meal without approval from the Alpha himself." She explained.

The response was expected, yet I wasn't giving up. I understood perfectly well what she meant with her explanations. If anyone wanted to get to the Alpha, the only way they would want to do it was through poisoning. The fact that he was the Alpha already meant that a physical confrontation would not be successful, thereby other means of eradication would be employed.

"I understand your skepticism, but I'm not a spy sent to unalive the Alpha, I swear." I pleaded. Her eyes glistened up a bit, but she remained adamant. I knew that with enough pleading I would be able to get her to crack, so I pressed on.

"I didn't say you're a spy or anything like that." Emily said in her defence. "Also, why do you want to serve him so bad?"

Another question that I had expected. Intentionally, my cheeks flushed red, and with my facial expressions I gave Emily the answer she wanted to hear.

"You're a bad girl, aren't you Hazel?" She asked jokingly and I replied with a smile. Doubtfully, Emily wheeled the cart of food into my hand before leaving me with a firm warning.

"If anything happens to Alpha Conner, I'm going to have the guards toss you in the dungeon." Although she was smiling as she said those words, the intent behind them didn't pass my attention. She meant every word she said, and suddenly I was afraid of going along with my own plan.

"Thank you." I said before progressing towards my final destination, Conner's room.

As I approached the door, my heartbeat escalated significantly, so much so that I needed to calm myself down multiple times. After I was done controlling my breath, I raised my right hand, shaped it into a fist, before knocking at the door.

"State your business." A voice demanded from the other side of the door.

"I've brought your breakfast Alpha." I answered with a calm voice, while hoping he heard me. Had I raised my voice any higher than it already was, I would have inevitably croaked.

"You may enter." He authorised, and I immediately wheeled the cart of food inside on command. He wasn't looking my way as I entered the room. But when he finally did, there was no iota of surprise in his eyes, contrary to the scene in my head.

"You're not surprised to see me?" I asked as I dished out his meal onto a plate.

"I can tell you're not Emily just from your voice. Also Emily does not call me Alpha." He answered. His voice was light unlike the other time, and despite him just waking up, he still maintained his majestic appearance. And what was with that perfect hair?!

"Did you have a goodnight?" He asked, and I nodded in affirmation. I was doing my best not to look at his face, but when we were this close to each other, I couldn't help but try to steal a glance at his seraphic features from time to time.

"So why did you decide to serve me breakfast today? Did you have plans of seeing me naked in my room?"

I choked on my breath at his words, and he laughed lightly at my reaction. This man was blunt with his words, and had no shame whatsoever. And how could he maintain a straight face after saying such words, I would be sick from embarrassment.

I calmed myself down, and in the same instant switched my personality to match his.

"Did you want me to?" I returned, and he was quite surprised by my words. Once again, my heartbeat increased, maybe I wasn't supposed to say something back. Playing these type of games with an Alpha was never advisable. He might misread my intentions and everything would just go wrong.

"But really tell me, why did you decide to serve me today?" He asked genuinely. He was smiling, but now I could tell he wanted to know my reasons. He got down from the bed, threw a shirt over himself, and went ahead to get his laptop before returning to the bed.

I gulped down the lump of anxiety and lust that formed in my throat before answering.

"I was curious, how did you find out I was pregnant?"

His eyes darkened a bit at the mention of my pregnancy, but he was quick to mask his intents from leaking. I couldn't help but notice the change in his voice as he spoke this time.

"I smelled it. You can mask it all you want, but my nose will always sniff out anything odd in my pack." He answered with resolute confidence. It was as if he was aware of everything going on in his castle, and it was scary to some extent. "Also, I've seen you throw up a couple of times." He added, before finally taking a spoonful out of his food.

At first I was pretty satisfied with his answers, but on second thought it felt really awkward. I had no memories of me ever throwing up in public since I entered the walls of this pack. I always eased myself in private, so how on earth did he see me throwing up? Was he lying, or has Alpha Conner been stalking me?

I intended to question him, but he beat me and asked first.

"Is that all you wanted to talk about Hazel?"

I was a bit confused at first, so I didn't answer.

"I know that you're pregnant, but you've never mentioned about the father of your unborn child." His eyes had suddenly become emotionless, and looking inside them brought up memories I so desperately wanted to forget.

His eyes were just like Alexander's, devoid of love and all the affection I expected from my husband and mate. Without permission, my body started to tremble under the pressure that engulfed us. My tears threatened to fall out, but I held them back. I had promised myself never to cry about my past, but I was barely holding on right now.

"Hazel!" Conner called out, but I was too lost in my own thoughts. "Hazel!" He yelled out a second time, only this time he reached out and held me. His touch called me back to reality, and subconsciously I threw my arms around him.

"It's alright Hazel, we don't have to talk about it if you're not ready." He said with his arms now held against my feeble flesh. His warmth was inviting, but I resisted and pulled away from the embrace. I wanted to be comforted, but I didn't trust myself to love again.
