Chapter 4

Alina:

Anya left me with food, warnings, and a door that did not lock. And the key that Dimitri left for me on the table.

That should have comforted me. I still felt like I was in a cage. I mean, you couldn’t technically tell me that it wasn’t even if the door was open. It made me wonder how far they would let me run before they dragged me back.

I sat by the fireplace long after she left, the tray half full beside me. I had eaten enough to stop my hands from shaking. I knew that despite my anger, I needed strength, and I hated that I was going to need to depend on them for it.

My father’s voice kept replaying: Take her. She is yours. I closed my eyes and saw him kneeling, begging for his life, offering me like a coin. The memory made my stomach twist. I stood abruptly, needing to move before the walls pressed in.

The key still sat on the small table where Dimitri had left it. And for a foolish second I wanted to snatch it and run. My wolf pressed at my ribs, restless and weak.

Mate.

“Don’t,” I whispered. “He is not our mate.”

I picked up the key. The metal was cold in my palm, and I waited for guards to burst in, for Anya to appear, for Dimitri’s voice to roll down the corridor telling me not to be stupid. But nothing seemed to happen.

I opened the door without needing the key, and I frowned that they did not bother locking it. I peaked out the door, expecting to see at least someone outside, but the hallway was empty.

I stepped out and kept close to the wall. The mansion was a maze of corridors and staircases; the scent of wolves lingered everywhere. I followed the faintest trace of cold air, windows meaning exits, exits meant a chance, and it was one that I was willing to take.

Once, voices echoed below and I ducked behind a pillar until two guards passed. They did not see me or perhaps they did and chose not to stop me. The idea scared me more than the thought of them dragging me back to the room.

I reached the door, and the smell of trees filled my nostrils. It was an easy escape, right…?

“Running already?” Dimitri stood at the far end of the corridor, dressed in black, sleeves rolled to his forearms. He looked carved from shadow, silent, waiting. “I would have expected you to at least try to stay the night.”

“Did you leave the key just to see if I would use it?” I asked.

“Yes,” he said. “Not that you needed it. As far as I know, I also gave instructions for you not to be locked in.”

“You were testing me.” I snapped as I felt my anger rise to my chest.

“I was learning you.” He said, raising an eyebrow as he took a step closer to me.

My back pressed against the door, and I found myself trembling at the thought of what was to come now.. “Are you going to punish me now?”

“No,” he answered after a beat. “I am not going to punish you.”

“What?” I asked, and he shook his head at me.

“If I wanted you punished, little wolf, you would not have made it this far.” He said calmly. “Come on,”

“Come on?” I asked, and he nodded. “What do you want from me?”

“You were walking out the door. So, come on, the two of us are going out for a walk.”

“No.” I said, shaking my head.

“You asked what I wanted,” he said, and for the first time that night something almost like amusement flickered in his eyes. “You argue as if it changes the walls around you. Might as well tell you what I want and wait for you to actually try and listen.”

“You command as if it makes you less of a jailer.” I said, making him scoff before he stepped past me and opened the door.

“I said walk, Alina. Not kneel.” He said, taking a step out of the house. He left the door open and waited for me at the front porch.

I waited for a few seconds before nodding as I followed him out.

The garden surprised me, and I found myself staring at it as I allowed myself to fall for the beauty of it. Dimitri walked beside me, and I wrapped my arms around myself as I tried to shield myself from the cold winter night.

“You should have taken the coat by the door,” he said.

“I was trying to escape. I forgot to accessorize.” A faint curve of his mouth made me look away as I refused to see his smile.

“Where would you have gone?” he asked, and I shrugged.

“Anywhere.” I said, looking at the horizon.

“That is not a place.”

“It is when the place you are leaving is bad enough.” I said, and he raised an eyebrow. To my surprise, he didn’t comment on my statement. “Would you have stopped me if I made it past the gate?”

“Yes.”

“Well, at least you admit it.” I muttered despite myself.

“I do not lie when the truth is easier.” He said casually.

“You know that I am not staying here willingly,” I said.

“I know, but it is not like you have a choice in the matter. You might as well actually try and make the best of it.” He took off his coat and held it out. “Put it on, you don’t want to end up being sick.”

“No.”

“Fine, then don’t take it from me. Take it from the bench.” He draped the coat over a stone bench instead of placing it on my shoulders. He was giving me a damn fucking choice. I snatched the coat and pulled it around myself despite my anger. He smirked and looked away from me.

“Do not look so pleased,” I snapped.

“I would not dare.” He said, raising his hands in mock surrender.

“Why did you bring me out here?” I asked, pulling the coat tighter around my body as the wind picked up.

“Because if I kept you locked inside tonight,” he said, “you would spend the whole night planning how to break the windows. I would rather not replace them before morning…”

  • Alpha Bratva   Chapter 94

Asher:By the time evening settled over the territory, Nikita still hadn’t called. At first I told myself it didn’t matter. She was angry with me, she’d made that perfectly clear. Even after agreeing to give me another chance, she’d warned me she wasn’t going to forget everything just because I apologized and sent flowers. Fine. I could work with anger. I could handle a woman who kept her boundaries. What I couldn’t handle was silence. She should have called by now, I knew that she would have done so on normal occasions.I sat behind my desk and stared at my phone longer than I cared to admit before finally setting it face down on the wood. Nothing. No message, no missed call, not even a sarcastic text telling me she was busy and I needed to stop expecting her attention on demand. That bothered me more than it should have.Daren noticed. Of course he noticed.“You’re going to burn a hole through that phone if you keep staring at it,” he said, amusement in his voice. “And it is still n

Alina:I lay in Dimitri’s arms until the house finally quieted. The amulet at my throat warmed against my skin, its moonstone pulsing faintly whenever I shifted.Dimitri’s arm was wrapped around my waist so tightly I could feel the steady press of him against my side, as if loosening his hold for even a second might make me vanish.I had told myself I wanted to sleep. I meant it. But thoughts kept moving through my head like restless animals, circling and refusing to settle.Dimitri wasn’t asleep either. I could tell by the way his fingers traced slow, careful patterns along my ribs, stopping and starting as if he were trying to map the exact place where I fit against him. His chest stayed tense beneath my cheek. For a long time we didn’t speak. Then I broke the silence because the question had been sitting in my throat all evening.“What’s going to happen?” I asked. His hand stilled. “With Asher?” he clarified.“With everything,” I said.He exhaled slowly. “I don’t know.”I lifted my

  • Alpha Bratva   Chapter 92

Dimitri:I found Alina sitting in front of the window when I walked into the bedroom. She’d pulled a chair close to the glass, legs tucked beneath her, staring out at the darkening grounds as if the world beyond the panes might answer the questions she wouldn’t ask aloud. The room was quiet, but it wasn’t the comfortable silence we shared most nights. This silence had weight to it, heavy enough that I felt it through the bond before I even closed the door. She knew I was there, she simply didn’t turn around. My wolf shifted under my skin. She is still hurt.“I know,” I said, softer than I’d meant to.There was no edge in my voice this time. I’d spent the evening fighting, Mikhail over tactics, Anya over her stubbornness, Nikita over a locked door, and somewhere between trying to keep everyone safe and trying to understand what Asher was doing, I’d managed to hurt the one person I’d been trying hardest to protect.I walked toward her slowly. She didn’t move when I stopped behind the ch

  • Alpha Bratva   Chapter 91

Nikita:I was sitting on the edge of my bed when I heard my mother arguing with the guard outside. At first I didn’t pay much attention, I assumed she was trying to convince him to let me out, but then her voice rose and something in me went tight.“I am not asking for your permission to see my daughter,” she said.“Anya, Alpha Dimitri gave direct orders…” the guard started.“I heard what he ordered, and I am telling you that you are not going to keep me from her.” She said angrily. “And you can go ahead and tell that to your Alpha. Now fucking move.”Footsteps came down the hall, and I pushed myself up and watched the door as it opened. My mother walked in without waiting for anyone to announce her, and the guard didn’t try to stop her. She closed the door behind her and locked it herself. That small, deliberate motion made me frown.“Mom?” I said. “What are you doing here? What is going on?”She didn’t smile. She walked straight to my wardrobe and started pulling clothes out, laying

  • Alpha Bratva   Chapter 90

Dimitri:The second the bedroom door closed behind me, I regretted walking out, mostly because I knew that she would be lost in her thoughts, regretting every second of this encounter.I stopped in the middle of the hallway, my hand still on the handle, and for a heartbeat I almost turned back. I could feel Alina through the bond, and what came from her wasn’t anger anymore. It was hurt. That tightened something in my chest until my jaw ached.I hadn’t meant to make her feel like I doubted her. I didn’t doubt that she cared about Nikita, and I certainly didn’t believe she would put her in danger on purpose. If anything, I knew Alina well enough to know she’d blame herself for this even if she had nothing to do with it. My wolf growled low in my bones. Our mate is hurt.“I know,” I snapped at the bond, more to myself than to him. “But right now, there are things that we need to take care of.”Go back. The things can wait, she shouldn’t be hurt.I closed my eyes and dragged a hand over m

  • Alpha Bratva   Chapter 89

Alina:I knew something was wrong before Dimitri even walked into the room. The estate had felt off all afternoon: guards moving through the halls more than usual, Anya gone after lunch, and Nikita nowhere to be found. At first I told myself it was all tied to the maid and the necklace, but the air had a different edge now. It felt personal. My wolf felt it too, and she grew more restless than ever as she started pacing under my skin while I tried to lose myself in the book Dimitri had left on the table.Mate is angry, she said.I looked down at the same paragraph I’d been pretending to read and answered out loud, “I know. I just don’t understand what is wrong.”He is not angry with us.I wanted to believe that, but a gut-wrenching feeling had me thinking otherwise, and when the bedroom door finally opened, I looked up immediately. Dimitri stepped inside with an expression I couldn’t read. He didn’t smile when he saw me, and that alone made my stomach tighten.“What happened?” I asked.
