"Elias." Liora moved to where he was standing near the door to the adjoining room, his eyes on the gap where Petra's voice occasionally came through. "Elias, listen to me. Freya picked up a scent."

He turned.

She told him quickly. The back door swinging. Elowen gone. The scent matching the necklace incident, matching the kitchen that morning.

He listened. She could see him taking it in, filing it, understanding what it meant.

And then his eyes went back to the door.

"Morris," he said.

Just find her and hold her location." He paused. "And get two men on the back perimeter. She came in and out through that door.""Yes Alpha."Morris left.Elias looked at Liora. The fear for Niko was right at the surface of his face, barely managed, sitting in the set of his jaw and the way his hands were slightly tight at his sides."Go," she said quietly. He looked at her."He needs you in there," she said. "Not out here. Go."Something m

"Dark magic," Elias said."Residual," Kael said. "The kind left deliberately. Not transferred through contact with the poison itself." He looked at Liora's hands, still turned palm up between them. "If she had prepared the poison or handled it directly the trace would be chemical. Biological. It would match what's in the boy's system." He paused. "What's on her skin doesn't match. It was placed there separately. By someone who wanted her hands to read guilty if anyone examined them.""Someone who knew you could do this," Owen said."Someone who knew the method exists and prepared for it," Kael confirmed. "Which narrows the field considerably."Elias said nothing. He stood at the window where he had been standing since Petra took Niko to the adjoining room and the examination moved out of sight. His back was partially to the room. His hands were at his sides.Liora watched the back of his head and waited."Elias," she said.He turned. The doubt was smaller now. She could see that. The

She stood in the silence his question left behind and felt it move through her like something physical. Not anger. Not even hurt, exactly. Something more complicated than both."No," she said again. Steadier this time. "Elias. Look at me."He was already looking at her. That was the thing. He hadn't looked away. He was looking at her with fear and doubt and underneath both of them something that was fighting hard against both of them, and she understood it. She understood it the way you understand something that breaks your heart and makes complete sense at the same time. His son was on the couch. His son was breathing poison out of a system that should have been safe in his own home."I swear on Freya," she said. "I swear on the bond. I swear on everything that happened in that ritual chamber last night." She held his gaze and didn't let herself look away. "I would never touch Niko. Not like that. Not ever."Elias looked at her.Freya stayed completely still inside her. Like she was

Elias came through the door first. He crossed the room in four steps and dropped to his knees beside Niko, his hands moving over his son the way a father's hands move — checking everything at once, looking for what was wrong, finding it in the trembling and the white at the corners of his mouth and the shallow uneven breathing."Morris." His voice came out as something she had never heard from him before. Raw. Stripped of every layer of control. "Morris. Get the healer. Now."Morris was already on his radio in the doorway.Elias lifted Niko. Both arms, the boy's body against his chest, his head tilted to keep the airway clear. He stood and Liora could see his arms shaking slightly — not from the weight. She had seen him carry Niko a hundred times without effort. His wolf was right at the surface. She could feel it from where she stood — the particular energy that came off an Alpha whose most protected thing was threatened. Hot and enormous and barely contained."What is it?" Owen said

She stood in the corridor for three more seconds. Then she told herself it was exhaustion. The ritual had taken something from her even if Freya had come back stronger. The night with Kael and Owen and the perimeter alarm and the knelt wolves in the moonlight had taken more. Her body and her wolf were both recalibrating and sometimes recalibration felt like warnings that weren't warnings at all.*Freya—**I heard you,* Freya said. Still tense but quieter now. *Maybe. Just — watch him.*Liora knocked on Niko's door and pushed it open.He was sitting on the floor with three toy cars arranged in a formation that apparently meant something to him."Here." She handed him the juice. He took it without looking up. Drank half of it immediately the way he drank everything — committed, no hesitation. Set the glass on the floor beside him."Thank you," he said. Already back to the cars.Liora watched him for a moment. He looked fine. He sounded fine. She let herself out.---Kael arrived at nine

Elias waited until Liora was settled with Owen going over pack boundary questions before he touched Kael's shoulder in the corridor. Not roughly. Just enough.Kael turned."Walk with me," Elias said.It wasn't a request.---The corridor off the east wing was empty. Elias stopped when they were far enough from the study that voices wouldn't carry and turned to face Kael directly. He held out his phone.Kael read the message. One line. Unknown number.*Ask Kael what really happened to your first mate.*Elias watched his face. And there it was. Not much. Not the dramatic crack of someone caught in something. Just a flicker — a half second where the easy confidence that Kael carried like a second skin moved aside and showed something underneath it that was not confusion. It was recognition."I don't know what this is," Kael said."Your eyes do," Elias said."Anyone could have sent this." Kael handed the phone back. "You have enemies. You've had them for years. Someone is trying to create
