She made it downstairs before they reached the door.

She pulled it open before they could knock, stepped into the frame and kept her voice low and controlled.

"Niko is asleep," she said. "Whatever this is, it ends here."

Leoric looked at her pleasantly. "Good evening, Liora."

"Go home, Leoric."

"I came to speak with Elias." He stepped forward. She didn't move fast enough and he was past her, into the hallway, just like that. Easy. Unbothered. Like he'd been inside this house a hundred times.

Elias didn't wait. The moment Niko's scream cut through the night, he was running. Liora ran after him. All around the field, dark shapes burst out of the treeline. Morris and his men, moving fast and low, closing in on the outpost from every side."GO! GO! GO!" Morris roared.Elias hit the doorway first. He crashed through it shoulder-first, and the old wooden frame split apart. Liora was two steps behind him.The main hall was long and empty. Torches flickered along the stone walls. Dust floated in the orange light. And in the middle of the floor lay a body.Liora skidded to a stop.It was a man. Face down. Arms flung out. A dark pool spread slowly beneath his head across the dusty stone.Morris knelt beside him and turned him over. Liora looked away, but not fast enough. The wound was right in the forehead. Close. Very close."Point-blank," Morris said grimly. "He never saw it coming. Or he didn't try to stop it.""Who is he?" Elias demanded.Morris pulled at the man's sleeve. A ba

"Her death," Elias repeated. The words sat in the doorway like a body on the floor.Sophia was crying openly now. "It says the heir has to die inside the ritual circle. On a night with no moon. Then everything in her blood passes to whoever performs it." She wiped her face with her sleeve. "Tonight there's no moon, Lio. I checked."Liora looked up through the open front door. The sky was black. No silver anywhere."So he was never going to give Niko back," she said slowly. "Not for me. Not for anything.""No," Kael said quietly. "He was going to take both."Elias closed the front door.He stood there with his hand on the wood for a long moment. When he turned around, the wildness was gone from his face. What was left was cold and steady and terrifying in a different way."Then we stop playing his game," he said. "Morris.""Alpha.""How many of our best can you have ready in ten minutes? The quiet ones. The ones who don't miss."Morris didn't even think. "Six. Seven with me.""Take the

"Hello, brother."The man's voice was low and smooth, almost lazy. He smiled into the camera, and it was Kael's smile, except colder. Much colder.Kael didn't move. The phone trembled slightly in his hand."Dorian," he said.Liora's head snapped toward him. "Dorian? The file said Gideon.""Gideon was the name I gave him," Kael said hoarsely, not taking his eyes off the screen. "When I hid him. When I buried his records under the cousin line. Gideon was supposed to be dead."On the screen, Dorian laughed softly. "Gideon was always a terrible name. You never had much imagination, Kael."Elias pushed forward until his face was beside Kael's. "Let my son go."Dorian's gray eyes slid to him. "Ah. The Alpha. The one who thinks he gets to keep what isn't his." He tilted his head. "Your boy is very brave, by the way. He bit me."Niko sniffled. "I'm sorry, Daddy.""Don't be sorry," Elias said, his voice cracking. "You did good, Niko. You did so good.""Touching," Dorian said. He gave Niko's sh

"Everyone. In the front hall. Now."Elias's voice rang through the whole house. Within minutes, every maid, cook, gardener, and guard on the estate was lined up across the marble floor. Some were still in their nightclothes. A young kitchen girl was crying quietly.Elias walked slowly down the line. His eyes were still gold. He looked at each face like he was trying to see through skin."Someone in this house knew which room was his," he said. "Someone knew when the hallway would be empty. Someone knew."Nobody spoke.Liora stood near the stairs with her arms wrapped around herself. Sophia had gone back to the library to keep searching. Kael waited by the front door, silent, with two guards watching him.Elias stopped at the end of the line. Morris stood there, straight-backed as always. For a long second, Elias just looked at him.Morris didn't flinch. "Alpha.""Where were you when he was taken?""In your study, sir. With you.""Before that.""Checking the west wing rooms for the cou
