Chapter 3

Author: Belen
I didn't care what Callum thought of me. All I wanted was to make Hadley pay.

But before I could go after Hadley, he came after me first. With his Juno in tow.

Inside the cottage the Alpha King had given me.

Hadley sat in the main seat, holding Juno's hand, looking pleased with himself.

When he saw me, he didn't even stand. Just waved a lazy hand.

"You used to call yourself the Alpha King heir's mate. Everything in this place was furnished to that standard. You're not that anymore, so I'm taking it all back."

On Hadley's order, his stewards stormed into my courtyard. They tore the place apart like a raid.

The swing my father had built me with his own hands -- they ripped it out of the ground.

The frost-flowers my mother had brought back from the borderlands, the ones she'd named after me -- they uprooted every one and trampled them into the dirt.

My eyes went bloodshot. I lunged to stop them, but Hadley's enforcers grabbed me and forced me to my knees at his feet.

Hadley tipped my chin up with the toe of his boot. His eyes were soft -- but they were looking at Juno.

"Juno, take a look around. Whatever you like, it's yours. You're going to be the Alpha King heir's mate. No one in this whole territory will ever mistreat you again."

Juno looked shy, but what came out of her mouth made my blood run cold.

"I'd like the pendant around her neck. They say the Bloodline Pendant is a sacred heirloom of the Gifted line. Since I'm a Gifted She-Wolf, it should be mine."

Juno stared at my throat. She didn't care about the shock her words sent through everyone in the room. Including me.

I'd never considered the possibility that Juno was Gifted.

If she was, why hadn't Hadley said so in my past life? Why hadn't he brought it up in the Throne Room?

I wanted to demand answers, but I didn't even get the chance to open my mouth.

Hadley was afraid I'd struggle. He dislocated my jaw.

I collapsed to the ground. All I could do was curl around the pendant and protect it with my body.

It was the only thing my mother left me. I couldn't lose it.

I whimpered, fighting with everything I had.

But the gap between us was too wide. Hadley plucked the pendant off me like it was nothing.

He turned it over in his hand.

"Nothing special about it. Here, Juno. It's yours."

Juno snatched it with glee. She hung it around her own neck right in front of me, making sure I could see.

I spat blood. I forced myself to my feet, trying to grab it back.

But Juno just giggled and threw herself into Hadley's arms.

And Hadley clapped his hands. A swarm of Rogues flooded in.

Hadley raised an eyebrow.

"Zoe, with Callum you'll never know what it's like to be touched. Let me help you out. Give you a taste. On your wedding night, you can teach Callum a thing or two."

On Hadley's command.

The Rogues lunged at me like starving animals, eyes gleaming.

I shook my head wildly. I tried to scream at the servants to stop them. But they stood frozen, heads bowed.

My whole body trembled. I felt like I'd been plunged into ice water. The memory of Rogues tearing at me in my past life came flooding back.

If it happened again, I'd lose my mind.

Countless hands appeared in front of me, clawing at my clothes. I was about to --

Then a maidservant I didn't recognize spoke up.

"Alpha King heir, Zoe is a Gifted She-Wolf. What if she gets pregnant? The public won't know whose child it is. If someone tries to claim it, that's a problem for you."

Hadley paused. He looked me over, still pinned down by the Rogues.

"Good point. You're off the hook this time, Zoe."

Hadley sneered. He waved the reluctant Rogues away and looked down at me.

"I'll let you go for now. Once Juno gives me an heir, I'll come give you one too. Consider it a gift."

Hadley's hand touched my face. I couldn't stop myself from dry heaving.

That seemed to satisfy him. He left with Juno on his arm.

After Hadley was gone, the maidservant who'd spoken up rushed over and helped me to my feet.

"Zoe, I'm so sorry for what you went through. Please know that Alpha Callum has everything arranged. This debt will be repaid."

I looked at her. I nodded, hatred burning through every part of me.

Hadley went silent. He stared at Juno, who was barely clinging to life. Then he threw himself at her like a madman."You bitch! This is all your fault! If you hadn't been so jealous, I wouldn't be like this!"I watched every second of it. The irony was suffocating. In my past life, Hadley never had Juno. So he turned her into his untouchable fantasy and used me as his punching bag to prove how devoted he was to that fantasy. In this life, he got her. And the moment she failed to give him what he wanted, he ground his precious fantasy into the dirt.Juno brought this on herself. But Hadley had been garbage from the very start.I stopped looking at him. I took Callum's hand and walked out of the Alpha Manor. After the Alpha Succession Ceremony, Callum and I would officially move into the Alpha King heir's Wing.Callum had the place scrubbed top to bottom. Every trace of Hadley was thrown out.The next time I saw Hadley was at the Alpha King's funeral. He stood outside the Throne Room doo

"Enough! Shut your mouth! Haven't you humiliated us enough?"The Alpha King strode up to Hadley. Before Hadley could react, the Alpha King's hand cracked across his face.Hadley clutched his cheek in disbelief."Father! Why are you hitting me? They're the ones who set me up! It's because of them that I ended up like this!"Hadley's eyes were bloodshot. His whole body trembled. This was his old trick. Playing the victim. In my past life, when he'd tortured me to death, he'd knelt before the Alpha King with this exact same look and begged his father to protect him. This time, the Alpha King didn't indulge it.For the first time, he looked at Hadley with real disappointment."You have the nerve to blame others? Your own mate was sleeping with a Rogue, and this is the woman you fought so hard to claim?""If that Rogue had kept his mouth shut -- or died -- the entire Ashford bloodline would've been tainted. How am I supposed to face every Alpha King who came before me? What will the Pack ch

Of course Callum and I had no objections. The ones with objections were the Rogues.Outside the Pack Enforcement Bureau, a group of Rogues had gathered. They banged their tin cups against the ground, loud and shameless."Where's the marshal? Get out here! We're filing a report! Some woman took off with my child! I want her found!"The Rogues' claim drew howls of laughter from the crowd."You? A filthy Rogue? What woman would carry your pup? You're dreaming!""Exactly! Who'd be blind enough to pick you? What's she gonna do, birth a litter of little beggars and hit the streets with you?"The Rogue at the front was the same one who'd led the assault on me in my past life. His face was just as arrogant as I remembered. He spat at the crowd."What do you people know? She came to me. I was out begging and she dragged me into an alley. Had her way with me before I could even think straight.""See this? She left her gold clasp behind. With a body like mine, she's probably carrying my pup right

After the two weddings, nearly everyone's eyes were fixed on my belly and Juno's.They were all placing bets on who'd get pregnant first. But hints from the Alpha King suggested that no matter what happened with Juno, the Alpha King heir title was still Hadley's.By tradition, a prince's rank and duties were restored after his wedding.Callum hadn't been reinstated. The confinement order hadn't been lifted either. By every measure, he was the unfavored son.I rested my hand on my stomach and watched Callum practicing his swordwork in the courtyard."What do you think the Alpha King is planning? He knows exactly what's wrong with Hadley's body, and he's still propping him up this high. The Council's opposition isn't exactly quiet."Callum didn't stop his movements."I just got word. The Alpha King is looking for a new Gifted She-Wolf. He probably already knows Juno can't conceive."I raised an eyebrow. The opportunity was coming.A few days later, word got out that Hadley was taking a s

Callum was a man of his word. On our wedding night, I barely closed my eyes. The next morning, when we went to the Alpha Manor to pay our respects, my legs were still shaking.Callum steadied me. He was about to say something when Hadley and Juno came storming down the corridor from the opposite direction. The moment Hadley saw me, his anger visibly spiked. He sneered."Brother, if you can't perform, don't take it out on Zoe. Look at her face -- white as a sheet. Pathetic. A man's greatest shame is tormenting his own woman. That just proves he's useless."Hadley's mocking gaze drifted to Callum's lower half.I burst out laughing."Is that so? Let me throw that right back at you. You know why I didn't marry you, Hadley? Because you can't get it done. I wasn't about to waste my life on a broken man.""I feel bad for Juno, honestly. Look how rough she looks. She's supposed to be Gifted -- a little action shouldn't wear her out this much. Want me to take a look at her?"Before leaving this

Those long legs that had been trapped in a wheelchair now commanded every pair of eyes in the crowd."God. The cripple can stand? Is the Alpha King heir seat actually going to change hands?"Murmurs rippled through the crowd. Hadley's face went black. He stared at Callum's legs, his expression unreadable. Then a cold smile."Dear brother, you've been hiding this pretty well. That paranoid about your little brother and your father?"Hadley was seething through his teeth.Callum's Alpha King heir title had been won on the battlefield, one fight at a time. Hadley only had his seat because of the Alpha King's favoritism.More than a few Council members had doubts about Hadley's ability. That's why so many of them had signed the petition the moment they heard about Juno.In their eyes, Hadley had no real talent and cared more about chasing women than governing.Callum smiled. Polite on the surface. Provocative underneath."I owe it all to my wonderful mate. Without her medicine, I'd never h
