Chapter 4

Author: Geese
"Eth—"

I opened my mouth to speak, but the words were choked back by the wave of scorching heat radiating from Ethan's body.

In the confined space, the air seemed to thicken, becoming heavy and charged with tension.

His hands braced on either side of me, trapping me between him and the back of the couch. His gaze was terrifying.

There was no yelling, no accusations. Ethan simply leaned in, silently and aggressively. His nose nearly brushed my skin, trailing from my collarbone up to the hollow of my neck.

I stiffened, too nervous to even breathe.

The crushing pressure of a top-tier Alpha King wrapped around me like a suffocating, airtight web.

A strange heat began to bloom along the inner thighs he'd forced apart, sending my heart into an irregular, frantic thrumming.

"Such strong cologne," Ethan murmured in a low voice, rough with a barely contained fury. "Rose… and a nauseating stench of cheap cologne."

My heart skipped a beat. He smelled it!

According to the plan, I was supposed to boldly admit that I had a man now and make him leave me.

But as I faced this beast on the edge of losing control, I couldn't utter the words I had prepared. All I felt was the primal fear that made me want to run and deny everything.

Ethan's finger suddenly lifted a stray lock of hair by my ear. His fingertips ghosted over the red mark I had carefully created.

The touch was light, but it sent a shiver down my spine.

If he shifted my hair just a fraction more, the forged hickey would be completely exposed.

"Freya."

His breath fanned against my sensitive ear. It felt hot and wet, with a force that seemed to burn me from the inside out.

"Where did you go this morning, besides picking up Nora from the airport?" Ethan asked.

"N-Nowhere…" I turned my face away, unable to meet his eyes. "I just… stayed in the car..."

Damn it!

If I had just told him that I went to a love hotel, it would have angered him enough to break our mate bond. But I completely chickened out under that suffocating stare.

A strange sense of guilt and pressure made it feel like the oxygen was being sucked out of the room, and my chest tightened with panic.

"Really?" Ethan let out a soft chuckle, but his smile never reached his eyes.

His hand suddenly slid down along the strands of my hair. His fingers felt slightly rough as they grazed the most sensitive skin on the side of my neck.

"If you didn't go anywhere…"

He suddenly moved closer. With his lips hovering just over my ear, he spoke in a tone so deep it sounded like a murmur from the depths of hell.

"Then where did this smell of another man come from?"

"Mm…"

Whether it was fear or the sensation of my ear being teased, I shuddered, and a soft gasp escaped from deep within my throat.

It was trembling and seductive, sounding exactly like the sound I made when he pushed me to my absolute limit in bed.

The air seemed to freeze at that moment.

Ethan's crimson eyes darkened with fury. That sound made him seethe with jealousy, yet simultaneously filled him with the satisfaction of total control.

He straightened up abruptly and swept his arm out.

With a swoosh, the heavy blackout curtains were drawn shut. The room plunged into darkness, as if the night had come early.

In the dark, his glowing eyes locked onto mine.

"Can't answer me?"

Ethan closed in on me, completely blocking off any retreat. "Since you can't answer me…"

In the darkness, he traced the glaring red mark, then pressed his fingertip into it as if trying to erase both the skin and the memory with it.

His voice was harsh and obsessive as he growled, "Then let your body remember every moment that's about to happen. Forget everything that shouldn't be in your mind, completely!"

With those words, his large hand slammed against the back of my head. Driven by a raw possessiveness, he crashed his lips onto mine in a brutal kiss.

He wanted to overwrite everything with his scent, his mark, and his very being, leaving me with nothing but the memory of him.

The next morning, sunlight streamed across the bed.I moved my fingers, only to feel like my entire body was falling apart. I had gone through two intense "workouts" in the study and bedroom yesterday.Ethan—that wolf who'd been starving for three years—clearly didn't understand the concept of moderation.A wave of self-pity washed over me.I had initially wanted to break the mate bond to save my own life. Now that the air was cleared and our feelings were soaring, I felt like I was closer to an early grave than ever.Clearly, the only way to protect my health was to break the bond!"What are you thinking about?"A lazy, deep voice drifted from behind me. Ethan pulled me into a hug and nuzzled the back of my neck.Damn that werewolf constitution! He was the one doing all the work, yet why was he the one waking up looking totally refreshed?"N-Nothing," I replied, shrinking back.If he knew I was thinking about breaking the bond to protect my health, he'd probably make me pull

As I looked at Ethan's desperate attempt to compromise just to keep me, I felt a pang of heartache mixed with a touch of amusement.I pulled out my burner phone and the cologne-scented shirt and tossed them at him."Here," I said. "Meet your rival."Ethan caught the shirt, looking bewildered. "This size… It's mine?"He looked up sharply, glancing from the burner phone to the shirt. His brain seemed to have short-circuited."There is no other man." I sighed, poking a finger into his rock-hard chest."The shirt was a belated birthday present, and the cologne was just a sample. It's a very 'manly' scent, don't you think? I sent the texts myself, and the photo is staged. Ethan, from the very beginning, it's only ever been you."As the truth sank in, Ethan's face was a masterpiece of conflicting emotions.Shock, confusion, and pure joy flickered across his features before finally settling into fury."So…"He leaned in dangerously close, narrowing his eyes. "To get me to break our

Ethan continued, "I'm the strongest Alpha King, but in front of you, I'm nothing more than a coward starving for a love I can't have and too afraid to ever bring that love into the light."Those were the most searingly honest words I had ever heard. My heart felt like it had been scorched. Otherwise, why would it ache with such sharp, bitter pain? So… what I had mistaken for indifference and coldness was actually his way of protecting himself while harboring a desperate love?"I know you're mad at me." Ethan began to undo the buttons of my collar and pressed a warm kiss over the steady beat of my heart."When the chandelier fell at the gala, my instinct was indeed to save Nora, but I stopped. In that split second, my logic overrode my instinct. I was worried you'd cry if I saved her."Maybe that's it. My instinct chose Nora, but my soul and all of me wanted to choose you, so I intentionally stopped. Even if the whole world misunderstood me, I didn't want you to see me holding ano

Midnight struck. A new day had begun, but Ethan's words from earlier were still looping in my head.Suddenly, the lock clicked open.Ethan walked in carrying a decanter of red wine, looking exhausted. The cold, intimidating pressure he usually wore had vanished, replaced by a heavy weariness."Have a drink with me," he said, pouring two glasses. His eyes were dark and unreadable. "Happy third anniversary, Freya."I froze. Was today the third anniversary of our mate bond? With all the recent drama, the date had completely slipped my mind."Let's talk after this drink," Ethan said. His voice was eerily soft as he looked at me. "We'll talk about what you want… about breaking our bond."Dissolving our bond?I took the glass, feeling suspicious. As I stared at the deep crimson liquid, a sharp sense of deja vu hit me.It seemed like every time a special occasion rolled around, he'd insist on a drink with me.And every time, I'd black out.I'd wake up the next morning feeling lik

The gala ended in a farce. Nora and Reynold were rushed to the infirmary. The guests dispersed, yet the whispers stayed behind."I guess the fated mate bond isn't all it's cracked up to be. Alpha King actually hesitated just now.""That Reynold guy has some serious guts. I can't believe he actually pointed a finger at Alpha King's nose and tore into him like that.""Poor Ms. Freya. She's like a placeholder caught in the crossfire."Every word cut deep.I should have been happy. Ethan's perfect reputation was cracked, and Reynold's love for Nora was proven beyond a doubt. But why did my chest feel hollow, as if a piece of me had been scooped out?It hit me that someone was willing to die for Nora, while I was just a pitiful tool used to vent desires.…Back in the master bedroom, Ethan stood with his back to me, irritably ripping off his tie.The tension in the air was suffocating.I hesitated for a long time before asking the question that had haunted me. Ethan's retaliation was swift.Barely an hour later, everyone in the palace received an order—a grand gala would be held tonight to welcome Nora.A maid arrived at my door with a stunning gown, her gaze full of pity. "Ms. Mueller, Alpha King… insists that you attend in your finest attire."My finest attire? To attend my husband's and my sister's engagement party?I looked at my reflection in the mirror and forced a bitter smile.Wasn't this exactly what I wanted? My plan to break the mate bond was almost complete. I should have been thrilled. I should have been popping champagne. But why…As I stared at the gorgeous gown, a leaden weight settled in my chest, making every breath feel like a desperate struggle. The euphoria of freedom was gone, replaced by an ache I couldn't put into words.…The ballroom was a sea of glittering lights, yet the air was stifling.Ethan sat at the head of the table. He had changed into black formal wear, his collar slightly open to reveal his c
