Virgil's POV
"Do you think he is okay?"
"I don't know."
"What happened? Did he tell you anything?"
"No. He just started to scream and suddenly fell."
The conversation between two people sounded distant, although the words were clear. I winced and groaned as I tried to remember what had happened. It was the night of Gina's ceremony. I was trying to mark her as my Luna, but then... I couldn't. I remembered how Gil didn't cooperate with me.
He had blocked me, and when I tried to force him out, the pressure was too much for my body to withstand. I groaned again and moved my head to the side. At least my head wasn't hurting anymore. However, my eyelids felt too heavy.
"Oh, he is waking up."
A familiar voice said. That sounded like Gina, the love of my life. She must have been worried sick when I lost consciousness. After taking a few breaths, I managed to open my eyes.
At first, I squinted. The light was too bright for my eyes, but they soon adjusted to the brightness. The first person I wanted to see was Gina.
As I had expected, she was standing beside me, running her fingers through my hair. One of her friends was in the room, to whom I suppose she was speaking when I woke up.
"Hey," I managed to croak despite my parched throat. Gina hastened to pour a glass of water for me.
Smiling in satisfaction, I drank it. Candy wouldn't have been so prompt in responding to my needs. Letting her go was the best decision of my life. If only Gil understood...
"It is so good to see you wake up, Alpha," her friend stated, and I nodded at her as a response.
"It feels good too," I chuckled.
Just then, the door to the room opened, and my beta, Alex, entered.
"Oh, he has woken up. How are you feeling now, dude?" He asked joyously.
"Better," I replied just as enthusiastically.
"What happened?" He asked, frowning as he placed both his hands on the mattress of the hospital bed and gazed right into my eyes.
"My wolf blocked me... I don't know. He didn't cooperate," I replied honestly.
"So, he didn't want to mark her as your Luna?" He further inquired.
"He is crazy," I grumbled. "He wants Candy. He doesn't understand that she left us all. She had fled from her duties. He keeps saying that he wants her."
I shrugged, looking away from him.
"Does this mean our Luna will remain unmarked?" He asked again, making me snap my head at him.
"No! I would do everything in my power to complete that ritual, and I would mark her. I believe Gil would eventually give in. I won't stop trying until I succeed, even if it means that I will have to try on the night of the full moon every month," I told them and looked at Gina, whose eyes seemed to be focused on Alex.
"You are with me, aren't you, Gi?"
I asked her in a soft voice, and a bright smile spread across her face as she nodded enthusiastically.
After the doctor checked on me, I was allowed to go home. However, there was no news from Gil.
I shrugged it off and tried to focus on the pack work and my life with my chosen mate.
Days passed by with no news from my alpha wolf. Not even the slightest hint of his existence. Without my wolf, taking care of a pack of werewolves was hard. They demanded a lot of my time, and at times I struggled to keep up.
Two extremely busy weeks passed by. As usual, I was in my office, trying to complete the tasks, but the knocks interrupted my work.
I looked up and glanced at the closed door of the office. To say that I was exhausted would be an understatement. I was overworked and about to collapse. However, being the alpha of a prestigious pack meant that regardless of the situation, I had to get things done. Sighing deeply, "Come in," I called.
My eyes bulged out when the door opened and three elders walked inside. Their robes swayed as they strolled inside. They were the elders appointed by the alpha king who watched over the work of all the packs and reported to him. They must have heard about my case and come to meet me.
"Alpha Virgil. We have been very patient about your case. It isn't normal for an alpha wolf not to surface for two weeks," the highest elder spoke.
"We are here to scan through your mind. Our comrade here is a hybrid, part wizard and part werewolf. He would scan through your mind and see if your wolf responds." He pointed at the youngest among them.
"Would you allow me to scan your mind, alpha?"
All I could do was nod. He took casual steps towards me and stood behind me. After laying his hands on either side of my head, he started to massage my temples.
"Close your eyes. Relax, alpha," I was instructed. As I closed my eyes and relaxed in my seat, I felt myself slipping into a deep trance. It was as if I were traveling through space until I came across a strong wall. A huge, black wall as hard as steel. I tried to break through it; however, it was too strong. Climbing up was out of the question.
The surface was slippery. I remained hopeless at the wall. I knew I had to go through; however, it was impossible.
"It is too hard," I grumbled as I attempted to push through. I didn't stop until my head started to feel like it did on the night of the Luna ceremony. I tried to ignore it until I couldn't. I clenched fistfuls of hair and dropped my head, screaming.
"Aahhh, I can't make it stop!"
My eyes flung open, and I realized that I was in my office. Two elders were gawking at me. I looked around to see the youngest one soaked in sweat. Gasping for breath, he shook his head.
"I think his wolf has gone dormant."
I gaped at him in dismay.
Days passed by, and nothing changed. Except for the fact that I have started to feel that Gina has started to get distant. However, I chose to ignore it because I thought I might be mistaken.
It was another fine day. The elders paid a visit once again, and I had a bad feeling about it. My beta and my chosen mate, Gina, were summoned to the office. I continued to take heavy breaths, trying to control my heart.
"Alpha Virgil, with a heavy heart, we are here to denounce you from your alpha position." His words made me feel as though the ground shook underneath.
"We waited, hoping your wolf would come back. But now we feel that we have waited long enough," he continued and glanced at my beta.
"Alex, I think you are the best candidate to lead this pack now," his gaze shifted to mine.
"Please don't take this gesture as disrespectful. We don't feel that a non-shifter would be suitable to lead a pack of wolves." He paused.
"So, Alex, please accept this position and lead this pack in the future."
I sighed in defeat. However, I accepted that they were right. They wanted the best for the pack.
Forcing a smile, I walked towards Alex and patted his shoulder.
"Congratulations, man. I'm sure that you will do a great job. Accept it and lead our pack towards success."
I walked out of the office since I believed that there was no point in me staying there anymore.
Kelvin's POVWith a racing heart, I rushed to my apartment. I can't believe Mara did that just so I would go to check on her. Thankfully she didn't seem to mind. After closing the door behind me, I breathed out a whoosh of breath and hung my coat on the coat hanger near the front door of the apartment."Damn," I wheezed as I slumped onto the couch and leaned back. Tilting my head against the headrest, I closed my eyes.I was tired. Not physically. However, mentally. Ever since my buddies had found out about Candy, they had been pushing me towards her. They keep implying that I should try to date her. They had even said that both of us were in similar conditions and that we could help each other heal. They may be right. But I wasn't ready to move on. Three years have passed since the death of my pup. My mate had rejected me and left the pack after that. We weren't able to find her, however, I didn't a
Candy's POV"Nothing happened!" I exclaimed for the 10th time, yet these crazy ladies wouldn't stop squealing in enthusiasm."You opened the door too soon. If you had waited a few more minutes, they might have kissed!" Tara's face beamed in excitement as the others giggled."I know! I should have waited. But I was worried about her. The door wasn't locked so I thought I should enter so we could check on her," Mara replied, making me groan."Oh God, guys." I felt my face heat up as I covered my face with my hands."Nothing would have happened. I tripped and he caught me before I fell and hurt myself!" I told them, desperately trying to hide my flushed cheeks.Three pairs of eyes studied my face. Rina shrugged. "I think you looked so cute together.""Yeah.""Definitely."Mara and Tara mumbled out their agreements. Rolling my eyes I shook my head."Come on guys. We all know that is not going to happen," I laughed out loud."Why not?" Mara looked at me with seriousness on her face. Frowni
Candy's POVAs usual, I was woken up by Goggles licking my face. I winced and then laughed. "Okay okay, I am up," I chuckled, stroking through her white fur. "What is it, girl? Are you hungry?""Meow," she responded and all I could do was snicker. After taking her bowl I poured some of her food in it and went to the bathroom to freshen up. I was barely able to get dressed when the doorbell rang. I smiled to myself. That must be Mr. Kelvin. As promised, Mr. Kelvin, Mara, Rina and Tara spent time with me every single day. They were slowly becoming close friends. And soon, I grew comfortable to be around them. It was wonderful that I found great friends at the moment I needed them the most.Weeks had passed after that fateful day. Not a single moment passed by without me thinking about my pup. However, as time passed, I learnt to live with the pain. It never got easier. There were g
Virgil's POVI arrived at the nearest human city (New York City) after a six hour drive. I had no intention of going back to the pack or anywhere near it. With the money I had brought with me, I managed to rent a room.I parked my car outside the aged building from which I had rented the room and laid down on the bed. The room was old and obsolete. The bed made funny creaking noises and the attached bathroom was without a doubt overused. There were cracks in the wall and the paint on the wall was peeling so despite the room being tidied up, it didn't look very clean. However, I couldn't care less. I stared at the ceiling of the room for some time and closed my eyes as I thought about my life and my choices. For the first time, I started to regret my actions. My heart ached as I thought about what I had done to my mate. I shouldn't have cheated on her in the first place. I should have been patient.I
Virgil's POVLife had become monotonous ever since I was denounced from the alpha position. I was used to taking care of the whole pack in addition to the business I started. Now, the only work I had to take care of was the guest house I built and its business. No more training or dealing with the pack affairs. I missed doing the work I loved. Another thing I noticed was that I have lost friends.Everyone wanted to be my friend or someone close when I had the power. But after I lost my wolf and hence the alpha position, literally no one checked on me. Alex is too busy to keep in contact. Even Gina seemed to have grown distant. I understand that she had been recently hired as a secretary in the pack office and most probably was busy since she was newly hired. So I had been trying to ignore it. However, as days passed by, I started to find it extremely hard to pretend that nothing was wrong. She spends
Candy's POVWalking back into the apartment was emotional. I was once again reminded of how I had prepared for the birth of my pup. How enthusiastic I was when I checked the baby cribs online and how gleefully I had rejoiced on the day it got delivered at my doorstep. I recalled how eagerly I had visited the shops and stores that sold baby products—dresses, blankets, oils, shampoos, towels and little mittens that would fit into his tiny little hand. My heart broke all over again. It felt as though it plummeted into a deep pit."Excuse me," I whispered and strolled towards the room. I was on the verge of tears and I didn't want to break down in front of them. Mara, Rina and Tara waited in the living room as I walked into the bedroom."We will fix you a sandwich," I think that was Tara who spoke. It didn't matter to me. I nodded and pointed at the fridge."Everything is in there," I told them and
