Chapter 2

Penulis: Briony
When Dom said that, he had no idea I'd end up with his rival.

After we made up, Dom had a little PTSD.

If I was even slightly cool with him, he'd say I was freezing him out again.

So I started bringing him water at his basketball games.

The first time Lucian Vance saw me, he froze on the court.

Then Dom crashed into him going for a rebound, and Lucian landed wrong on his ankle.

Any other day, there would have been claws on that court. They were the heirs to Stonecrest and Northridge, the two biggest packs in the territory, and they'd hated each other since middle school.

But then Lucian found out I was Dom's sister.

He forced out a smile. "We're good, man. No big deal."

Lucian was a lot of energy.

Loud, friendly, clingy in a way that should have been annoying and somehow wasn't.

He felt clean. Honest.

The kind of boy who grew up in a happy house.

I turned him down without thinking twice.

I didn't know what to do when people were cruel to me. I didn't know what to do when they liked me either.

I was a sickly kid. Hospital visits every few weeks for as long as I can remember.

Back then, Dad was Alpha of Stonecrest and Mom was his Luna, and between the two of them, there was no time left for a kid who kept getting sick.

So they sent me to live with my grandparents.

They mailed my grandparents photos. Stacks of them. Grandma would sit me down at the kitchen table and show me.

Maybe they did it so I wouldn't forget them.

I looked at the happy family of three. Dom at the amusement park. Dom at the aquarium. Dom at the mall. Dom blowing out his candles.

It hurt.

I didn't let it show.

My grandparents liked boys better. More precisely, they liked the heir better. Every Christmas, Dom's check was bigger than mine.

When he visited, they couldn't stop smiling. They never smiled at me like that.

But they never mistreated me either.

I got three hot meals a day. My clothes were always clean.

When I threw up in bed in the middle of the night, nobody yelled.

I figured the least I could do was be easy to take care of.

In fourth grade, my parents brought me home.

I thought I'd be happy.

They were all good to me. Especially Dom.

He didn't act like most firstborns do when a sibling shows up. He was always poking me, dragging me places, spending his allowance on candy for me.

All of it felt wrong.

When my family crowded around me to sing happy birthday, I felt nothing. When they worried about me, I didn't feel touched.

What I wanted was a door.

Somebody gets close, I open it, step through, and I'm gone.

Lucian was the first person who sat down outside that door and refused to leave.

He always had something to say.

Just woke up. Dreamed about you. You were hugging a giant tub of ice cream. So cute.

Are you craving ice cream? Let me take you to dinner tonight. After, we'll get a giant tub and hug it together.

I didn't want to go out. I didn't know how to say no. So I didn't answer.

Summer break is torture. I can't see you.

Ives, answer me. Even a period is fine.

Way too cheesy. I didn't answer.

Sorry I went quiet for two days. I was in the hospital. Pneumonia, if you can believe it. Wear a jacket, okay? Don't end up like me.

I felt terrible. I was scared he was mad. I didn't answer.

He called.

"Ives, I know you saw them. You're too nice. You felt bad you didn't check on me, and then you didn't know what to say, so you said nothing. Right?"

That was Lucian. Serious. Persistent. Thoughtful.

He chased me for three whole years.

Long enough that even Dom backed off.

Somewhere in there, I started to believe this one wasn't going anywhere.

That I was safe with him.

So I said yes when he asked me out.

A few years later, I said yes when he asked me to be his mate. He marked me the night of the ceremony.

On paper, I became Luna of Northridge. In practice, I painted. Luna work meant people, and people were the whole problem.

Lucian built us a house on the quiet edge of his territory, far from the pack house, because I couldn't sleep with forty wolves under one roof.

I thought that was love.

What I never saw coming was this.

The brilliant assistant Lucian kept bragging about was the girl who bullied me in high school.

Lucian tried everything. None of it changed my mind.I flew home, and Lucian and I stood in front of the Council.I said the words.I, Ivy Mercer, reject you, Lucian Vance, as my mate.He accepted. I'm not a saint. The girl who bullied me got exposed, dragged, slapped. Of course it felt good. But maybe a new city shrinks the world. I didn't spend much energy on it.Serena's life imploded. She lost her job. Strangers wouldn't stop harassing her online.Lucian wasn't doing much better. Alphas heal in a day or two. He was in the hospital for nine. Lucian kept blowing up my phone. It didn't touch me.On day one, I logged out of everything and got a new number just for Dom.I had plenty to keep me busy anyway. Groceries one day. Baking the next.Life got good, fast. Then one day Dom sent me a link.It was a post from a gossip account. It was everywhere, and still climbing.Someone had dug up a nobody's secret burner account.Every post on it was unhinged. She bragged about bullying a coworker so badly the girl started eating lunch in a bathroom stall. She bragged about keeping every decent guy she knew on a string as backup. Never sleeping with any of them. All upside, no risk. Then, recently, a run of new posts.First guy I've ever actually wanted, and he went and mated the little doormat I bullied half to death in high school. I had a couple of drinks on the plane and slept better than I had in months. Not a single dream. When I landed, a car Dom had arranged was waiting. Someone had already stocked the apartment.I showered, crawled into bed, and slept again. When I finally turned my phone back on, the messages wouldn't stop coming.Lucian's first.Babe, Serena and I are here. She got you a huge bouquet. You're going to love it.Where are you?Are you okay?...Why is your phone off? Call me when you turn it on.You're not at Dom's? Where are you?Why did you clear out all your stuff?Babe?I closed it and opened Dom's.The first thing he'd sent was a screenshot of his texts with Lucian.Lucian had sent him a photo of a birthday cake with my name on it.In the bottom right corner of the photo was Serena's hand. We're doing great. Hate it all you want.Dom's reply:Oh, totally. My sister's the most forgiving person alive.Worst case, she never speaks to you again. The second thing was a video. Dom had set his

I slept at Dom's until two the next afternoon before I felt human again. My head was clearer. I was more sure than ever.Lucian would never agree to a rejection. He cared too much about appearances. He'd never admit his heart had wandered. So I wasn't expecting it to happen any time soon. But I believed he'd come around eventually.Humble background. Brilliant at her job. Pretty. Tough and fragile at once. Easygoing, open, and good at a little pout that never quite crossed the line. That was Serena, through his eyes. The woman whose texts he answered at one in the morning. The woman he stepped in front of without thinking. He'd fallen for her a long time ago and didn't even know it.I studied art. Since graduation, I'd freelanced. These days I was a painter who wasn't starving, which is more than most painters can say.I could work from anywhere. I'd take six months. Call it research. Call it a breather. When I told Dom the plan, he didn't ask a single question. He just kept sending me

I was shoving clothes into a suitcase with shaking hands when someone knocked on the front door.I nearly jumped out of my skin. Then my phone lit up. Dom.Open up. It's me.I didn't want to face him right now. I didn't answer.Something's been off all day. You fight with Vance? Is he home?I still didn't answer.About an hour later, I carried a bag of clothes I didn't want outside to throw out.Dom was sitting on the cold porch steps, waiting. It was past two in the morning. He was obviously exhausted and fighting to stay awake. The Alpha of Stonecrest, alone on Northridge land in the middle of the night. If anyone from Lucian's pack had found him there, it would have meant war.He hadn't cared. My first instinct was to turn around and go back in.Dom stepped in front of me.He sighed."Come on, Ives. Turn around. Look at me."I turned around."You're leaving, right? Where are you going?"I lied through my teeth. "I'm not, I'm just organizing some stuff..."Dom bent down until we were
