Southern coast territory.

Cain stood on the terrace of the vacation villa. He couldn't explain why, but a wave of unease had settled in his chest without warning.

Vivienne came over and looped her arm through his. "Cain, come on. Stop staring into space. This is our vacation."

He didn't move.

The face in his mind wasn't hers.

It was mine.

I used to beg him to take me to the southern coast. I wanted to see the bioluminescent tides under the full moon.

He never agreed. Not once. Every time I broug

The wolfsbane-coated silver dagger had missed every vital organ, but the toxins spread fast. It took the pack healer four hours of intensive treatment to pull Cain out of danger. The cost was permanent. The silver had corroded the core of his wolf's strength. He would never be able to fully shift again. For an Alpha, losing the ability to shift was losing the very foundation of what made him Alpha.Felix was pacing outside the treatment room. The moment I stepped out, he was in front of me, his face tight with worry."Please tell me you weren't moved by that. Two stab wounds and suddenly all is forgiven?"His voice climbed with every word. "I could've kicked that Omega aside in half a second. He threw himself in front of the blade on purpose — the whole thing was a performance!"A pause. Then, urgent: "If you think taking a knife is romantic, I'll do it next time."I looked at him, practically vibrating with anxiety, and pressed a hand on his shoulder."Calm down. I'm not getting back

Cain didn't give up that easily. Of course he didn't.From that day on, he planted himself near Kingsley Pack territory and refused to leave.I could see him outside the council hall. At the territory market. Every morning when I walked the border patrol route, I'd look up and there he was — standing just beyond the boundary line, watching me.The sight of him turned my stomach every time, but I couldn't have the warriors drag him away. Technically, he was outside our borders. He hadn't crossed. He called across the boundary: "Wren, every day you don't come back to Ashford Pack, I'll be right here. I'll make it up to you — however long it takes — until you forgive me."He bid on rare moonstone jewelry at auctions across the packs and had them delivered to me."I never gave Vivienne anything this valuable. Forgive me, Wren. I can't live without you."I didn't give it a glance.Felix shamelessly scooped up the jewelry, tried a bracelet on his own wrist, turned it twice, then tossed it in

Cain was about to step through the manor gates when Felix got there first. He braced his arm against the doorframe, blocking Cain entirely. His Alpha dominance rolled out in silence. The two pressures collided at the threshold, thickening the air between them.Cain's first reaction was fury."Wren, who is he?" The words ground out from between his teeth. "It hasn't even been a year and you've already let another Alpha into your pack?"I snapped out of my shock and let out a cold laugh."Cain Ashford, you and I have nothing between us anymore. Who's in my pack is none of your business."He faltered. For one instant, the realization seemed to land — he had no standing whatsoever to question me here.He closed his eyes and forced the anger down.I knew what was running through his head. A year apart had given him the hindsight he'd never had.No one waiting at the pack house when he came home. No one staying up with the phone, afraid to miss his messages. No one blending his calming incen

One year later. Kingsley Pack territory.Spring morning light poured through the tall windows of the council hall, falling across the territory map spread on the table.I closed the last border patrol report and nodded to the Gamma and his warriors. "Starting today, the eastern line goes back to three patrols per day. The new watchtower on the northern line goes live next week — you've each confirmed your assigned leads. No need to run it by me."They saluted and filed out. When I'd returned to Kingsley Pack a year ago, the territory had deteriorated to the point of near-collapse.Years without a formal Alpha had taken their toll. Seline had done her best as interim leader, but she was a Beta — there was only so much she could do.Neighboring packs had chipped away at the borders, inch by inch. Morale had crumbled. Several senior warriors had packed up their families and left for other packs. It took me a full year to piece this place back together.I restored order, reclaimed the bord

The altar crystal projected footage far more complete than what had been shown at the Pack Alliance assembly. In the recording, Vivienne stood stripped of every fragile pretense. Under the dim light of the sealed room, her makeup was perfect, her composure absolute, looking down at me — chained to the wall in silver cuffs. Her voice echoed through every corner of the sacred grounds, clear as a bell."She's yours tonight. Beat her until she's begging on her knees. Don't leave anything a healer could trace.""The harder you hit, the bigger the payout tomorrow."Everyone heard it.Then came the rogues' phone game.My call rang out again and again, hollow in the sealed room. The projection split to show the other side of the glass — Cain's phone lighting up in his pocket. He frowned, glanced at it, reached to answer.Vivienne caught his hand.Tears. Seduction. A threat — and in a few sentences, Cain killed the call and lowered his mouth to the back of Vivienne's neck. The moment the mark w

For the first time in his life, Cain was thrown out of the Ashford Pack's old residence. When Helena pushed him through the door, he didn't even resist. His steps were unsteady. It was a short walk from the house to the gate, but he drifted through it as though the ground were made of cotton. He got in the car and sat behind the wheel for a long time without moving. Finally, he opened the Alpha Council's bond dissolution certificate. He stared at his own signature. The one he'd scrawled in the treatment room without so much as a glance — he'd assumed it was a pack administrative form. He'd even used the opportunity to demand I vacate the Alpha suite. The last shred of illusion was snuffed out.I had actually dissolved the mate bond. Right under his nose, one careful step at a time, without him ever catching on.He tried desperately to piece together everything that had happened in recent days, but the harder he tried, the more tangled it became. The full moon rose. A violent pain tore
