Chapter 2

Penulis: Aurora
After cutting communication, I prepared Ash's farewell alone.

I wrapped Ash's body in a moonlight silk shroud — one I had woven by hand. It was meant to enfold his wolf form after his first successful shift, to help stabilize his newly born power.

As I wrapped him, I remembered the last words Ash spoke while he was still conscious.

That evening, Ash's body was already turning cold. He was shaking from the pain but refused to cry. He gripped my fingers and asked: "Mommy, is Daddy on his way? He promised to teach me to run under the moonlight. I want to learn so I can show him."

I told him, "Daddy will be here soon."

But Kael never came.

Ash died waiting for the father who had promised to teach him to run.

After I finished wrapping him, messages from Kael flooded my phone — "How's Ash doing?" "What did the Elder say?" "Why aren't you answering?"

I stared at those messages. I didn't reply.

The next morning, I carried Ash to the memorial hall to register the funeral rites.

I had just stepped out of the healing center when Kael burst through the entrance.

But he wasn't here for Ash.

Nora was right behind him, clutching an unconscious Lily. Kael's face was tight with panic as he barked at the guards: "Move! Something's wrong with Lily — get a healer, now!"

He didn't even notice me standing right there. He didn't see Ash wrapped in silk in my arms.

I stood still. I didn't call out to him.

When Kael brushed past me, he finally caught sight of me. His steps faltered for a moment.

I said nothing. I simply stepped aside to let him through.

Kael froze. Before, whenever he fussed over Nora, I'd always stop him, confront him. Now I wasn't saying a word, and he didn't know what to do.

He hesitated for a few seconds: "Let me deal with Lily first. I'll come see Ash right after — just wait for me."

Nora was sobbing his name behind him. Kael glanced at me, then turned and ran in after Nora.

A young female guard looked in the direction Nora had gone and remarked to her companion: "The Alpha really dotes on Nora. The second Lily cries, he drops everything."

Her companion nodded. "No kidding. Last Autumn Hunt he even carved a wolf fang pendant for Lily himself. He's never done that for his own kid."

The guard lowered her voice: "Who's that woman standing over there? Keeps hanging around the memorial hall with a bundle. Think she's trying to get close to the Alpha?"

Her companion scoffed. "A few days ago she came to register some pup for treatment, claiming she was the Luna. The Elder nearly laughed. Everyone knows Nora is the Luna. The Alpha's mark is practically on Nora's neck."

I heard every word.

Kael had said rogue wolves were a constant threat to the pack, and he was afraid that if people knew I was his mate, it would put Ash and me in danger. So he never let me attend any official pack functions, and never allowed me to present myself as Luna in front of the pack.

But after Nora returned, Kael brought her to the Winter Solstice Ceremony and the Full Moon Banquet. When pack members called Nora "Luna," Kael never corrected them.

The entire Silver Fang Pack believed Nora and Lily were the Alpha's mate and daughter. Ash and I were outsiders with no claim.

Kael found me after he finished with Lily.

He reached out to hold me. I stepped aside and avoided his touch.

Kael frowned slightly, his voice softening: "I know you're upset. The moment I'm done here, I'll go see Ash and infuse him with power to mend his wolf. Okay?"

I kept my head down and said three words: "There's no need."

Ash was dead. On the night of the full moon, his wolf had completely disintegrated.

Kael was silent for a few seconds.

Then he pulled something from the leather pouch at his side — a small pendant carved from wolf bone, shaped like a running pup.

"I had this specially made for Ash by a Frost Wolf craftsman up north. For when he learns to shift."

I stared at the pendant, lost.

Three months ago, for Ash's birthday, Kael had commissioned a moonstone talisman from the pack's own craftsman. Ash had spent ages choosing the design and waited an entire month in anticipation.

The day it was delivered, Lily saw it and threw a fit. Kael took it straight from Ash's hands and gave it to Lily.

He said, "Lily never had a father to give her anything. Let her have this one — I'll make you another."

Ash cried the whole night.

Kael never mentioned "making another one" again.

Now he'd brought back a new pendant from the north. But Ash would never wear it.

Before I could say anything, Nora rushed in, panicked.

She grabbed Kael's arm, sobbing: "Kael, the healer finished the exam — Lily's wolf is failing too, and it's getting worse fast. If she doesn't get an Alpha power infusion within seven days, she'll end up just like Ash!"

Kael's expression changed instantly. He grabbed Nora's hand: "I'll go confirm the plan with the Elder right now. Don't be scared — I won't let anything happen to Lily."

He turned away from me and hurried toward the Elder Hall with Nora.

I stood there, watching his back, and said one thing: "Kael — what about our Ash?"

Kael was on his knees outside the outpost, half his body convulsing beyond his control. When I came out and saw him, he was driving his fist into his own chest — each blow forced the shifting to recede for a few seconds before it surged back.He looked up at me. There was no Alpha pride left in his eyes. Only something I'd never seen on his face before — terror."This is my punishment. I didn't give Ash the infusion. I don't deserve to be an Alpha. I don't deserve to be a father. Now my wolf is collapsing — the same way Ash's did."Then he said: "Selene, if you'll stay by my side, I'll do anything you ask."He raised his right hand and slapped himself hard across the face. His claws raked three bloody lines down his own cheek.I didn't stop him.I looked at him coldly: "Kael. I have one condition. Go to the Alpha Council and formally submit a mate bond dissolution, in front of every Alpha. Acknowledge that you unilaterally violated your mate bond obligations and that it was your fault

The moment I'd seen Kael at the outpost, I'd already planned my next move.Through Moon Shadow's intelligence network, I leaked Kael's current location and detailed information about his weakened state to Nora.Nora had been hunting everywhere for Kael, demanding the official status papers for Lily. Kael had been dodging her. My plan was simple — lead Nora straight to him, and let him deal with the mess he'd created.Sure enough, the day after I released the information, Nora showed up at the neutral territory hotel where Kael was staying, Lily in tow. Before Kael could react, Nora confronted him in front of everyone: "You promised Lily an official title. Now you're going back on your word?"Kael's face was stone: "Nora, enough."Nora screamed: "If it weren't for you, Selene never would have left! Ash never would have died! Lily and I have given everything for you, and you won't even give her a title?"Kael snapped. The confrontation turned violent — Nora half-shifted and clawed open h

When I saw Kael, I felt nothing. No hatred, no love. Absolutely nothing.I pulled my wrist free and said calmly: "Our mate bond is already broken. I'm not your Luna anymore. Let go."Kael's eyes reddened instantly: "A mate bond can be rebuilt. If you're willing to come back, I'll re-mark you in front of the entire pack and publicly acknowledge you as Luna."I pushed him back and looked him in the eye: "We can't go back. And I have no right to forgive you. The one you owe is Ash."Kael went still for a beat, then grabbed my shoulders with a desperation bordering on madness: "Selene, we can have another child — my power will recover. The next pup won't have any problems, I promise."Another child. As if Ash were just a broken thing that could be swapped out for a new one. When I didn't respond, Kael lowered his head and tried to press his forehead to mine.I stepped aside.Theron came back from patrol and walked straight into the scene. He didn't hesitate. He stepped between me and Kael,

After Lily's infusion ritual, Kael collapsed on the stone altar in the ceremonial hall. The ritual was a success. Lily's fracture was repaired. But Kael had lost nearly forty percent of his power — far more than the fifteen percent Ash would have needed.Nora threw her arms around him: "Thank you, Kael, thank you..."Kael didn't respond. His hand was clenched around the death certificate in his chest. After Nora left, Kael unfolded the document and read it again — "failure to receive Alpha blood-kin power infusion, resulting in complete wolf disintegration."He started to shake. Then he stormed into the Elder Hall and seized the Elder by the collar: "You said Ash had another month. Why didn't he make it?"The Elder stared at him coldly: "What I said was 'another cycle, assuming the Luna's power continued to stabilize him.' Your Luna held him together alone through the entire full moon night. Her own wolf nearly collapsed. But she was never a substitute for Alpha blood — she could only

The moment Ash's body hit the roots, I lunged forward as if my soul had been ripped out. I fell to my knees and pulled him back into my arms. The ash-black scorch mark on Ash's chest was starkly visible in the morning light — any werewolf would know exactly what it meant. But when Kael saw that mark, his first reaction wasn't grief. It was doubt. He crouched down and pressed his hand against Ash's chest, trying to sense any residual wolf essence — nothing. He moved his hand to Ash's forehead and pushed in a thread of power to try to revive him — Ash's body gave no response, hollow as an empty shell.Nora crouched beside Kael and spoke softly, but I caught every word: "Kael... is it possible she didn't take proper care of him and that's what made it worse? The Elder clearly said her power could sustain him for at least two moon cycles."Kael's hand froze on Ash's forehead. He slowly raised his head and looked at me.That look wasn't the anguish of a father who'd lost his child. It was s

My words landed on Kael's retreating back. His steps did falter, just for a moment. He half-turned, his lips moving as if to speak. But Nora was choking on her sobs, clawing at his arm and dragging him toward the Elder Hall, her voice so shrill it echoed down the entire corridor: "Kael, Lily's seizing in there — you're the only one who can stabilize her!"Kael took a deep breath and turned to me: "Lily's life is hanging by a thread right now. I have to go. Just wait for me a little longer."Then he followed Nora and was gone.I watched his back disappear and said quietly: "There's nothing left to wait for."I sat outside the memorial hall the entire afternoon. At dusk, I overheard two herbalists coming out of the Elder Hall: "The Alpha's already signed off. Lily's ritual is set for five days from now — he'll be in seclusion to build his reserves until then."The entire process was identical to the plan the Elder had drawn up for Ash.The only difference: Ash's plan sat untouched for an
