Chapter 2

Author: Alyssa J
Damon stood in the doorway and stared at me.

One second.

Two seconds.

Three seconds.

Then he suddenly laughed.

"Ivy."

He walked back to the bed, his voice carrying a hint of resignation.

"When did you learn to pull tricks like this?"

I froze.

He looked down at me with something almost indulgent in his eyes, like he was coaxing a child who didn't know better.

"I know today was rough. Serena, what Asher said — it all hurt you. But you can't make up something like this just to keep me here."

"I'm not making it up."

"No?"

He raised an eyebrow, his smile deepening.

"Do you know what I put in the Herbal Moon Tea I handed you after every time we were together?"

Damon leaned down, his mouth close to my ear, his voice soft enough to sound like a love confession.

"Diluted Wolfsbane. It suppresses fertility."

My pupils shrank.

He straightened up and looked at my white face. Pain flickered in his eyes.

"I had no choice. You being around was making Serena act out. It was the only way to keep her calm."

"I never planned to tell you, but I didn't expect you to lie to me."

"Ivy, just this once. You know I don't tolerate women who play games."

"Get some rest. I'll come see you tomorrow."

He turned, pushed the door open, and walked out.

The door shut softly.

The infirmary room went terrifyingly quiet.

I sat on the bed, my head buzzing, and all those moments I'd thought were sweet came flooding back.

Every time after, he would pour me a cup of Herbal Moon Tea himself, watch me drink every drop, and only then go to shower.

I used to think he was so good to me. So thoughtful.

Turns out even that cup of tea was part of his plan.

I pressed my trembling hands to my belly.

The pup was supposed to be my surprise for him, but now it just made me look like a joke.

The pain in my abdomen twisted again.

I gripped the sheets so hard my nails cracked, but it didn't match even a fraction of the pain inside.

I wanted to scream. Nothing came out.

I wanted to cry. I had no tears left.

My body slid toward the edge of the bed on its own.

The next second, I hit the floor hard.

As my vision blurred, young Damon's face grew clearer and clearer.

That year, my father tried to sell me as an Arranged Mate to an older Alpha for a handful of Pack resources.

Damon shielded me behind him, eyes red, and said anyone who touched me would have to kill him first.

Back then he was just a castoff — the Alpha's illegitimate son, thrown out with no power and no status — but sheer recklessness was enough to keep me safe.

For me, he fought rogue wolves. The long scar on his back is still there.

To scrape together money for my food, he dove into frozen rivers in the dead of winter to catch fish and lost a fingertip to frostbite.

Later when I got sick and he had nowhere to turn, he went back to Thorne Manor and knelt before the stepmother who'd made his childhood hell, begging for medicine.

That boy, proud to the bone, crushed his own dignity under his feet for me.

He held me through the fever and said:

"Ivy, I'll protect you for the rest of my life."

The light in his eyes that night — I remembered it for years.

I thought that light would last my whole life.

But now...

I couldn't understand how the man who once loved me so much could now admit to cheating so calmly.

I even wondered if this was all just a nightmare.

When I woke up, the boy would still be there.

But the cruel thing was —

Over the next few days, Damon never showed up.

Only that anonymous account, sending new videos right on schedule every day.

My mate and my son were busy fussing over another woman.

They took Serena to the Pack Healer for her checkup, flew to Northern Aurora Territory for the Blood Moon Festival, traveled to the Southern Savanna for the Great Pack Migration.

His private jet was on standby around the clock. Wherever Serena wanted to go, she'd be there the next morning.

The worst part: on the very steps where I'd lost my pup, Damon knelt on every step praying to the Moon Goddess for a blessing on Serena's baby.

The pain in my chest nearly split me apart. I couldn't sleep, night after night.

The television in my room played Damon's grand Bonding Ceremony preparations for Serena on a loop.

The man who couldn't stand a speck of dirt knelt on the ground and kissed Serena's feet.

He said he'd love her for the rest of his life.

I grabbed everything around me and hurled it at the screen.

Damon's face shattered, but his voice wouldn't go away.

The Healers' assistants in the hallway gossiped about their beautiful love story.

Outside my window, the fireworks he'd set off for Serena kept going and going.

I was being driven out of my mind.

I picked up my phone and called the Alpha Council.

"I need to report a violation of Mate Bond law."

After that day, Damon and Asher showed up at the Sanctuary gates every day.I ignored them. When I walked past, I didn't even give them a glance.Asher cracked. He followed behind me, crying nonstop."Mom, I really know I was wrong... I was little back then, I didn't understand. Serena tricked me..."His voice got smaller and smaller until it was just sobbing."I didn't know she'd do that to you... I really didn't know..."I stopped and turned to look at him.Two years had changed him. He was taller, with dark circles under his eyes, like he hadn't slept well in a long time.I thought of who he'd been two years ago.Back then his eyes were so cold — he looked at me like I was an enemy.Nothing like this careful, pleading child in front of me."Go home. I don't want to see you two."His eyes went red instantly."Mom, I was wrong. Hit me, yell at me, anything — just don't leave me..."I looked at him. Something cracked inside me.I reached out and wiped the tears from his face. His eyes

The door closed.Damon stood outside and didn't move.Serena was right. I died because of him.He was the one who'd lost his mind, blinded by desire. He was the one who'd cheated and betrayed their bond.He was the one who'd pushed me toward the edge, step by step. And he'd actually believed I would forgive him, stay, keep waiting. He thought of my desperate eyes those final days, and the guilt and regret cut into his bones like a knife. He bent double, hands braced on his knees, gasping for air.His heart felt like it was being crushed, tighter and tighter. So this was what it felt like to wish you were dead.Time passed quickly. The next time I saw Damon was two years later.I heard a benefactor wanted to sponsor Packless Pups at the Pack Academy, so Wren and I went to meet him. When I saw Damon and Asher's faces, I froze for a moment. They'd both changed so much.Damon was so thin he looked like a different person, grey already showing at his temples, his whole body frail.Asher had

Meanwhile, I woke up on an island in the south.Sunlight came through the window and fell on the blanket, warm in a way that felt almost unreal.I opened my eyes and stared at the ceiling for a long time.No stinging antiseptic smell, no shock devices, no one restraining me.Salt air pushed through the window, carrying a strange scent, but somehow it felt safe."You're up?"A familiar voice came from the doorway. It was Wren. She was a friend I'd met at the Moon Temple Sanctuary. After severing her mate bond, she'd been ready to end it all when I pulled her back. She stayed and volunteered at the Sanctuary — for three years. The second before the dungeons collapsed, she showed up with a team and pulled me out.She was also the one who arranged a fake Pack Death Record so I could disappear.Back then at the Sanctuary, I'd saved her.Now she'd saved me.This island was a place I'd chosen long ago.Ever since Damon admitted the affair.Especially after that Bonding Ceremony, I'd given up

"Alpha, the Luna... she's dead."The Pack Warrior repeated it, then lowered his head, not daring to say more.Damon released the warrior and staggered back two steps, his back slamming hard against the wall."Impossible..."He mumbled, face white, and a mouthful of blood came up without warning.Blood dripped from the corner of his mouth, but he didn't bother wiping it, his eyes locked on the warrior:"Who gave you the nerve to say that about my mate?""Alpha."The warrior cut him off, voice strained:"The Infirmary has already issued a Pack Death Record. It's confirmed — it's the Luna."Damon opened his mouth, but nothing came out.He turned and stumbled toward the door.He ran out of the Infirmary and drove the whole way with his foot on the floor, heading for the home he'd shared with me.The half-hour drive felt like a century. His heart felt like a chunk had been carved out. He couldn't breathe through the pain.He ran through the corridors, through the gardens, toward the rubble

I slept for a long time.In the dream, young Damon kept apologizing, crying that he hadn't protected me.His eyes were red. His tears dripped into my palm.A sharp sting.I opened my eyes groggily. A pair of worried eyes was staring right at me.Damon held my hand. His little finger was missing a segment. He used to say that was proof of his love for me.But now...I turned my head away from his touch. That's when I realized I was strapped to the bed."Ivy, don't misunderstand. I was just afraid you'd hurt yourself.""And the severance document — don't overthink it. It was just a trick to keep Serena happy.""Besides, what we have doesn't need a piece of paper to prove it.""Ivy, you've been part of my life for as long as I can remember."Damon stood by the bed and rambled on for a long time. I didn't hear a single word.He kept talking stubbornly, waiting for a reaction from me.His phone rang over and over. He hung up each time, annoyed.Until Asher burst in:"Dad, Aunt Serena fell!

I ran toward the Bonding Ceremony, so furious I forgot to put on shoes. When I shoved open the Ceremonial Hall doors, Damon was about to bite the Mate Mark onto Serena's neck.He saw me, paused for a second, then walked over quickly, crouched down, and slipped shoes onto my feet."Ivy, how many times have I told you — your body's weak, you can't walk around barefoot."His voice even carried a thread of real anger. My tears came harder. The crowd whispered, trying to guess who I was.Damon turned around and told them without missing a beat:"This is the Ceremony Attendant. She was held up on the way...""No."I pushed past Damon, walked to the front, and showed my Mate Mark, showing it word by word:"I am Damon Thorne's bonded mate."The hall erupted.Damon's face darkened.I kept going:"Damon Thorne already marked me. Our bond is sealed. And now he's holding a Bonding Ceremony with another woman. He's violating Mate Bond law."I screamed with everything I had, my voice shaking."So th
