Chapter 5

Author: Alyssa J
For the next few days, I barely left my room except to eat.

I just wanted the cooling-off period for the divorce to pass quickly, turning a blind eye to how Kael and his sons bent over backward to please Sage.

Soon, Sage's birthday arrived.

Kael had wanted to throw a grand party, but Sage gently refused. "Let's just celebrate at home. I don't like things too fancy."

River immediately chimed in. "Perfect! I don't like outsiders sucking up to us either. It's so much better with just our family!"

On her birthday, the mansion was decorated luxuriously yet warmly. The staff bustled around while Kael personally placed a birthday crown on Sage's head.

"Make a wish." His gaze was tender.

Sage clasped her hands together and closed her eyes in the candlelight.

After blowing out the candles, Kael and the two children presented their gifts.

Kael gave her a set of antique jewelry, River presented keys to a limited-edition sports car, and Stone proudly offered the deed to a private island.

Sage's eyes filled with tears of emotion. "Thank you all..."

She suddenly looked at me, where I'd been sitting silently, with a sweet smile. "Aria, what did you get me?"

All eyes turned to me.

I looked at Sage's expectant expression and said calmly, "I didn't prepare anything."

I didn't want to, and I wasn't about to.

River's face immediately darkened. "Mom! How could you? You knew it was Aunt Sage's birthday!"

Stone pouted too. "That's so rude!"

The two little ones exchanged glances, and River's eyes suddenly lit up. "Hey, doesn't Mom have tons of nice stuff Dad gave her in her room? Let's pick something for Aunt Sage!"

Stone nodded eagerly. "Yeah!"

Before I could react, both children had already rushed upstairs and straight to my bedroom.

"Wait!" My face went pale as I stumbled after them, not caring that my leg hadn't fully healed.

When I pushed open the door, the two children were ransacking my room. My jewelry box was overturned on the floor, and things from my drawers were scattered everywhere.

"Found it!" River suddenly held up a gold necklace with a small moon pendant. "This one's pretty!"

My pupils contracted. That was the last gift Finn had given me before he died.

"No!" I rushed over to grab it back. "That's from your uncle!"

River nimbly dodged aside. "It's just a necklace. Can't Uncle buy you another one later?"

My voice shook. "He's dead!"

Stone rolled his eyes impatiently. "You're lying again! Last time it was just a dummy. Our real uncle is obviously traveling! He promised to bring me a present!"

Then he leaned over the railing and shouted downstairs, "Aunt Sage! We found Mom's present for you! You're gonna love it!"

I reached for the necklace, but River shoved me hard. "Why are you being so stingy!"

"Ahhhh—!"

I lost my footing and tumbled down the entire staircase!

"CRASH!"

The back of my head slammed hard against the silver candelabra that decorated the bottom of the steps, and blood immediately gushed from my temple.

This was a fatal blow to me since the wolf had already fallen into hibernation.

I lay in a pool of blood, my vision blurry and ears ringing.

"Mommy!" River and Stone were terrified and rushed downstairs.

River's voice trembled. "I... I didn't mean to... It's your fault for trying to grab it..."

Stone burst into tears. "Mommy, you're bleeding..."

Hearing the commotion, Kael strode over. His face went ashen when he saw the scene. "What the hell happened?"

I followed Kael back to the country. The familiar sight of the mansion greeted us, its grand facade unchanged from my memories. River and Stone heard the commotion and ran downstairs, their small feet pattering against the marble steps. Their faces lit up the moment they saw me."Mommy!""Mommy! Are you staying for good this time? We were wrong before, Mommy, I love you the most!"Even though Stone had difficulty speaking, seeing me made him unable to resist expressing his longing. His words came out broken and hesitant, but the emotion behind them was clear.I naturally noticed the injuries on their bodies. Fresh bruises dotted their arms, and Stone's lip was split. But what did that have to do with me? I hadn't just left Kael—I'd left River and Stone too. They had made their choice when they picked Sage over me.Facing the two children's enthusiastic words, I remained coolly responsive. My voice was flat, emotionless. "I see you're both well."River's smile faltered. "Mommy, don't

It was a pity he understood too late, causing me to leave. But not anymore. He had figured it out now. As long as I could forgive him, he would do anything.Thinking about the life when I returned to his side, Kael couldn't help but smile. Happy emotions filled his chest, making him incredibly eager for the moment he would see me. He had already planned everything out. First, he would apologize sincerely. Then he would show me how much Sage had suffered. Finally, he would promise me everything I had ever wanted. This time, he wouldn't let me slip away. The flight attendant announced their descent. Kael gripped the armrest tightly, his palms sweating despite his confidence. Eight hours had felt like an eternity. Every minute dragged by as he rehearsed what he would say to me.The place we'd agreed to meet was a coffee shop downtown. The familiar scent of roasted beans hit him as soon as he stepped out of the car. His heart pounded so hard he could hear it in his ears. This was it. Thi

The silver dagger's poison made him lose his healing ability. With blood loss, his breathing grew fainter. Someone frantically lifted him up, but he was thinking about finding me.His consciousness faded in and out. The world around him turned into a blur of voices and movement. Blood soaked through his clothes, warm and sticky against his skin."Alpha, stay with us!" His assistant's voice sounded distant. Kael tried to respond but could only manage a weak grunt. His lips moved, forming words that barely came out as whispers."Aria... find Aria..."In his haze, memories floated before his eyes bit by bit. When he learned of Sage's accident, he drowned himself in alcohol every day. Empty bottles lined his office floor. His family stopped visiting. Pack meetings were postponed. Everything fell apart around him.But I was there.I stayed by his side every single night. When he passed out on his desk, I covered him with blankets. When he vomited blood from too much drinking, I held his ha

Kael spoke with absolute certainty, while Sage held her head and cried and screamed like a madwoman suspended above the molten silver. She felt like she'd never really known the man standing below her. That oppressive aura radiating from him made it hard for her to breathe even through her panic."Kael, what are you trying to do..." she gasped between sobs. "Everything I did was so we could be together! I did it all for us!"Her voice cracked with desperation. "I eliminated the obstacles between us! I removed Aria so you could be free to love me again!""When did I ever say I'd be with you?" Kael's response was immediate and cutting. The man's voice was ice-cold, like the harbinger of death itself. "Aria is my Luna for life. You could never replace her, not in a thousand years."His words made Sage tremble uncontrollably. Her tears poured out as she looked down at him in complete shock."You're lying! You don't even care about Aria yourself!"She screamed the accusations at him. "If yo

Kael turned around ruthlessly and began walking toward the basement door. He was done with Sage. She would rot down here alone.Just as he reached the threshold, there was a startled cry behind him. The man spun around to see Sage rushing at him like a wild animal, a silver dagger clutched in her trembling hands. She stabbed it hard into his back with all her remaining strength. The woman who had lost her last bit of hope had undisguised hatred burning in her eyes. Her face was nearly splitting with rage and desperation."I won't let you destroy me completely!" she screamed.Sage's expression could already be called completely deranged. Her emaciated figure was still covered in blood from the procedure, and with red-rimmed eyes, she pulled out the dagger and tried to stab again."If I can't have you, no one can!"The bloody smell in the air grew thicker, but she didn't care about anything anymore. Her eyes only held the man who had been systematically destroying her life. This was her

Sage had been taken to the basement by Kael's bodyguards. She'd been locked up for three whole days now—no food, no water, not even a ray of light. She couldn't tell day from night or how much time had passed. Her stomach cramped with hunger, and her throat felt like sandpaper. The isolation was driving her to the edge of madness. When she was almost delirious from confinement, hallucinating voices and shadows, the heavy metal door finally creaked open.A burst of bright light suddenly flooded in. At first, Sage didn't react, her mind too foggy to process what was happening. She stared blankly at the doorway, squinting against the painful brightness.A tall figure stood silhouetted against the light. The man looked down at her for a long time without speaking.Sensing a gaze lingering on her for so long, Sage's sluggish mind slowly began to function again. Her eyes gradually focused as she looked in that direction, trying to make out the features. It was Kael!In an instant, she grabb
