Valeria:

By the time we went to bed, the anger had dulled enough that it no longer felt like a live thing under my ribs, ready to explode. It was still there, a steady ache that flared whenever I thought of my parents, but it had lost the sharp edges that made me want to scream. Thankfully, Nikolai did not try to talk it out of me or even try to let me open up if I didn’t feel like it. He just stood there by my side, silently letting me know that he was there for me.

Even when I told him to leav

  • Alpha Romanov   Chapter 92

Nikolai:By the time I went to get Valeria, the terrace looked almost too perfect for such a cold night. The staff had done more than I asked. Heaters stood discreetly near the stone columns, and warm light fell across the table without disturbing the darkness beyond. Candles flickered between low arrangements of winter greenery, while the snow gathered along the garden edges caught the moonlight and made the estate seem quieter than it had any right to be.Valeria stopped just outside the terrace doors. “You said dinner,” she observed. “But it seems to me like you put in the effort.”“I thought dates required effort,” I said, extending my hand to her, making her laugh softly and the tightness in my chest eased. That was all I wanted from tonight. Not forgiveness or another painful conversation about everything that had gone wrong, just something simple enough to remind us that we still knew how to be together.Valeria hesitated when it came to taking my hand, but I waited and when sh

Nikolai:By evening, Valeria looked more like herself. She was still tired, and I could see the caution in every movement, as if each small tug in her body reminded her of what had happened. Still, some color had returned to her face. She had spent most of the afternoon reading instead of staring into the distance. I knew that did not mean the fear was gone, but it eased some of the tension I had been carrying.I sat across from her near the window, council notes balanced in one hand, though I was getting very little work done. I had read the same paragraph so many times that I no longer knew what it said. Every few minutes, my attention drifted back to her.She lowered the book. “You’re terrible at pretending you’re not watching me.”“I have no reason to pretend,” I told her. “I am watching you.” I leaned back in the chair and looked at her properly. “You look better,” I said.“I feel a lot better.” She said, smiling, making my eyes soften.“Well, I am glad.” I said, “to say the leas

Santos:I waited three minutes after Elena left, long enough for her footsteps to fade and for the maid to wonder if I was still outside. She had seen me over Elena’s shoulder. Panic flashed across her face when our eyes met, and I lifted a finger to my lips. The gesture was casual enough to escape notice, but the maid understood. When I pushed the door open and stepped inside, she was waiting for me. Her anger hit before the door even closed.“You bastard,” she spat.I shut the door calmly. “That took longer than expected,” I said.“You stood there,” she accused.“Yes,” I answered, leaning against the frame. “I stood there the entire time and watched you lie to her.”“You made me lie,” she said. “She was my friend, and you chose to make me lie to and betray her!”“I didn’t make you do anything,” I replied. “You chose to do that, I simply gave the instruction, but you chose to listen to what I said and you are the one who followed along with it.”“You told me not to speak.” She snappe

Elena:By the time I reached the servants’ wing, my panic had changed shape. It was no longer the raw, contagious fear that had swept the estate when Valeria started bleeding. This was colder, it was the kind that arrives when you realize you left something dangerous unfinished and you have no idea whether the person you trusted with it still understands the rules.I found the maid in the linen room, folding towels beside another girl. The moment she saw me, her hands slowed. I had no patience for pretending this was a casual visit. “You.” I said, looking her in the eye. “Come with me.”The other maid glanced between us. “She needs to finish...”“She can finish later.” The girl I wanted set down the towel and murmured, “Yes, my lady.”We walked in silence to the quiet end of the servants’ corridor. I led her into a small storage room and closed the door behind us. Her expression tightened at once. “What happened? Is everything alright, my lady?”“The packet. Do you still have it?” Her

Elena:When Nikolai summoned me to his office, I spent the walk there trying to decide whether I was about to be forgiven, punished, or reminded that the only reason I was still inside Romanov territory was because Valeria had almost lost her child.None of those options settled well, and I knew that now more than ever one mistake could be fatal for me.I knocked once on Nikolai’s door, taking a deep breath as I did, preparing myself for the worst. Hell, I punched the man in the face, I was lucky to be alive after doing so, but now standing outside his door… I didn’t know how I should be feeling about it.“Come in,” he said. His voice was calm and that made me more uneasy than any raised tone could have.I opened the door. He stood behind his desk, papers spread out in front of him. The bruise along his jaw looked darker today, a reminder of what I had done. My gaze went to it before I could stop myself. He noticed, but neither of us said a word.“You wanted to see me,” I said.“Yes.”

  • Alpha Romanov   Chapter 87

Nikolai:Valeria finally got out of bed the following afternoon. It was not because the doctor cleared her or because Yelena insisted. Valeria had simply had enough of staring at the same four walls. She announced that she was walking to the chair by the window, and if anyone tried to stop her, she would become far more difficult to deal with. The doctor looked at me. I looked at Yelena. Yelena sighed while Valeria folded her arms. The argument ended there. Now she was curled against my side on the small sofa by the window, her legs tucked beneath a blanket and a book open in her lap. I kept one arm around her shoulders while paperwork rested on my knee. I had not meant to hover, but I was doing a terrible job of hiding it. Every few minutes, my attention drifted back to her face, her breathing, and every small shift that might mean she was uncomfortable or needed something.“Do you want to tell me what you are staring at?” She asked, not looking up from the book she was reading.“Who
