Chapter 2

作者: Magnolia
Damien dragged me toward the pack court.

Kane and Selene strolled behind us, taking their time.

Six years without sunlight had wasted the muscles in my legs. I couldn't keep up.

He yanked, and I went down hard, my back scraping across the stone.

The thin cloth of my shirt tore through. My skin burned.

Selene made a soft, concerned sound. "Damien, gentler. You're not this rough with me."

I clawed at the ground, trying to grab something. He hauled me up like I was filthy.

"How are you supposed to carry an heir looking like this?"

I could barely speak.

"Let… let me go."

Kane frowned.

"Why are you this weak?"

I lifted my eyes to his.

After everything they'd done to me — he really didn't know?

Damien muttered something — he didn't know how to answer.

Selene jumped in. "Oh, she's always like this. Acting pitiful, like we've been abusing her. We've been feeding her the best meat all these years, just to keep her blood strong."

I tasted blood at the corner of my mouth and almost laughed.

When they first locked me up, they said the blood "couldn't see daylight" or the cure wouldn't take.

I'd lived on what I could fight the rats and roaches for. Slept on a moldy felt blanket crawling with lice.

Once, I spent three days and three nights with a rotting corpse.

When the maggots crawled off the body and onto my hand, I thought that was the end of me.

I'd been out of my mind with terror, clawing at the wall — left the same white marks I had on my fingertips now.

"Damien, let me walk on my own. If I bleed more, I might die."

"Quiet. Stop acting pitiful."

Kane lifted me up. His fingers brushed the back of my neck —

And it hit, both of us at once. That sharp, instant pull. The bond.

Then it cut off.

Kane shivered, just slightly. His face tightened. Confused. But he let it pass.

"Selene already told me. They always measure each draw carefully. There's no way it could hurt you."

"Save your strength. Just apologize."

The pain in my chest didn't have a word for it.

"Every time… you knew they were drawing my blood?"

The memories crashed back.

How many times the needle had slipped near my throat, nicked my vocal cords.

That was why my voice came out broken now, like a busted fan.

The times when the nurse stepped out — when the doctor's hand had slid inside my torn shirt.

"Look at you, so thin… nothing left to grab. Just this part's still got some use."

Six years. All of it. All of it — they'd known?

I remembered being little. The border pack.

My foster mother dumping a pot of just-boiled bean soup over me, the pain so bad my body convulsed.

I'd screamed for my mother, and that monster only pinched me and kicked me, snarling:

"You filthy little bastard. Who said you could call me that? I have a daughter. You're nothing."

That's right. Her daughter — the one she'd swapped me with, the one who got to enjoy the Luna’s love and glory.

I'd been taken from my real family at four. By the time I was found again at fourteen, Damien and parents had been raising Selene as their own for years.

Even the mate bond had become hers.

We reached the pack court. I looked at every face in the hall.

Then I smiled, rolled up my sleeves, and showed them the scars running up both my arms.

"I'm not apologizing."

"You told me, years ago, that the one who took me would pay. That nothing would ever hurt me again."

"The woman who stole me was Selene's mother."

The room went still. Every eye turned to Selene.

A flash of panic crossed her face. She shot me a poisonous look.

The next second, right in front of everyone, she folded herself into Kane's arms.

She broke down sobbing. "Kane, I know she's suffered a lot. Ever since I came, our parents loved me a little more. Damien doted on me. She must feel like she lost everything because of me — that's why she's saying these things."

"And she's had feelings for our Alpha for years."

"Since you and I got together, she's been trying to —" She let it trail off into a sigh.

The moment she opened her mouth, every truth I'd said turned into "the lies of a jealous sister."

I shook my head. No. That wasn't what happened.

The full moon came around again. Alpha Kane stood at my grave. He'd put a picture of me as a child inside a small moonstone frame and hung it from his neck."Lyra. My love. Does it sound foolish, me calling you that now?"Since they'd buried me, he'd been drinking. Every night.Late at night, he'd carry my picture down into the dungeon where I had spent six years. And run his fingers over the marks I'd scratched into the wall.I'd been down there six years. Every full moon, I'd carved one line into the wall. Some of them were deep. Some I'd had to put my whole body into. Some were so faint they barely showed. There were nights I was so exhausted I could barely lift my hand.He had never known what those nights had been like for me. He had never known what was being done to me down there.By the time he did, it was too late. He'd taken rubbings of every mark. He'd laid them out on the grass by my grave. His full moons had become long."Eighteen, nineteen, twenty, twenty-one…"A few of t

Within three days, the pack reached a verdict: Selene was to have her eyes cut out at the Moon Goddess's altar — and be cast out. When they dragged her to the altar, she was still kicking and screaming."Help me — Dad — Mom — Damien —"They just stood there. Watching. Like they wanted to tear her apart with their bare hands. The last three days, they'd dug up everything. The pack stood in a ring around the open-air altar and watched Selene get forced down in front of the law-stone.My father read the sentence. He picked up the silver knife."Selene. For impersonating the Luna. For crimes against this pack.""No."Selene's screams had gone hoarse. "You kept me. You told me I was your daughter —""Shut up."Kane gripped her jaw. There was nothing in his eyes but hate.My father read on. "For acts of cruelty against —""I didn't do those things. I'm your daughter. You're the ones who insisted on dragging her back —"Selene shook her head. Her hair fell across her face.Everyone watched he

Kane had Selene locked in the dungeon. Then he carried my body home — to the home I'd spent my whole life dreaming of.His voice was wrecked when he looked up at my family. "Find out. Every single day of her life. And in that dungeon — those six years — find out what was done to her.""How… how did it come to this?"My family looked like they'd been played. The fury of being lied to was the first thing Damien felt. And worse — the "sister" he'd loved had been a monster the whole time. And she'd cost him his real one.To indulge that sister, he'd let the Alpha bleed me. He'd watched it for six years. There had been moments of pity. But the next breath, he'd tell himself it was for my own good.Once everything settled, once the family was at peace — nothing would really have changed. He hadn't seen this coming. He'd only — felt something for Selene he shouldn't have. How had I been bled to death? How was I the real mate?He sat on the floor, staring at our parents. They were on the couch

The papers on the floor. The blood-draw records. Everyone in the hall could see it now.The Moon Goddess must have been merciful. She hadn't let my soul vanish completely. She'd left part of me behind.Kane felt the bond-flame guttering out. Felt me leaving him for real. He let go of Selene's throat and pulled my body into his arms. That was when he noticed the bruises. Both arms. Purple and black, layered on top of layers.Skin that pale was almost translucent. The cracks in my fingernails were still there.Where some had been ripped off, the new skin underneath was no longer pink. The blood had drained from it. It had turned wax-pale. Almost see-through.He reached out and touched my face.I could feel him shaking. His whole body was shaking.Cold. The cold of a body that's finally stopped trying to hold its own warmth. My skin didn't give under his fingers. The curve of my mouth was set hard. His fingers moved from my cheekbone to my jaw. From my jaw to my ear. He smoothed the hair

"Where's the doctor? Where is the doctor?"Kane didn't even hear the panic in his own voice.I lay on the stone, listening. Nothing moved in me anymore. No anger. No grief. Not even sadness. It was like my body had taken my feelings with it when it left.I just watched them. Once they were sure I was dead, they'd all feel better…The pack doctor came running. His face was bloodless. He was shaking.Damien frowned. "If she's stable, take her to a sickroom. We need to get Selene home. She's had a shock. She needs rest."The doctor didn't move. His lips trembled. It took him a moment to find his voice."Alpha… Beta… Miss Lyra — she's gone.""What did you say?" Kane's voice climbed. "That's impossible. She had a knife in her hand a minute ago.""There's massive internal bleeding in her abdomen. Organ rupture from blunt-force trauma. She'd been losing blood for too long. We missed the window.""That's not —" Damien lurched forward and dropped to his knees beside me."Lyra?" He grabbed me. H

Kane saw the blood. His breath caught. His hand went to his own chest. But Selene got there first. She dropped to the floor."Kane, Damien, I'm scared. I'm dizzy — there's something wrong with her blood, I can't even look at it — has she cursed me with her hate?"Every eye snapped to her. Kane's whole expression tightened.Damien panicked."Selene, it's okay. She did this to herself. If she'd just behave for once and leave you alone, none of this would be happening."What was there left to explain?Something in me went quiet.I waited for the next blow. The crying stopped. The trembling stopped.Selene was still sobbing into Kane's chest. Her voice was thin and soft. Like a hurt kitten.Over his shoulder, those tear-filled eyes locked on me.The rod came down again. This time I couldn't hold it. Every organ in me screamed at once. Blood burst out of my mouth.Kane's body jerked, sharp and obvious.Selene blinked once and gasped."I know what it is! That's why her blood is so strange! I
