Chapter 2

Author: MeRuYash
Four days passed faster than the wind. Everywhere I turned, pack members were posting pictures with Adeline.

Finn had also stayed at the pack house, leaving me alone at his house, where pack members assumed I was a maid.

Today was my birthday, and as usual, I knew I would celebrate alone. Being wolfless got me worse treatment than the omegas.

I was packing away the laundry when someone knocked on my door.

"Come in."

The door opened, and Beta Derek rushed in, breathing heavily.

I jumped up, my heart racing.

"Is something wrong? Did something happen to Finn?"

Derek didn't answer. Instead, he shoved a white dress into my arms.

"Get dressed, Luna. We'll be late."

I frowned. Late for what?

Seeing my confused face, Derek said, "I almost forgot. Three weeks ago, Alpha asked me to bring you to the pack square on this day in this dress."

My heart jumped.

The pack square. And a white dress... What Lunas wear.

Today was my birthday. Could it be that even without my wolf appearing, Finn was finally going to keep his promise and reveal our bond to the pack?

With shaky legs, I changed into the dress and followed Derek.

The closer we got to the square, the louder the cheers became.

Flowers decorated the street. Balloons in my favorite colors, blue and red, lined every corner, and hundreds of pack members gathered around the arena in their best clothes.

A wide smile curved my lips as I pushed through the crowd to get to the front.

Then I saw the stage.

And the giant banner hanging above it.

[WELCOME HOME ADELINE]

My smile dropped.

This... It was never about me?

The crowd's thunderous applause caught my attention.

Adeline had just taken hold of Finn's extended hand to stand beside him on the stage. He kissed her hand, staring straight into her eyes.

A tear slipped down my cheek, which I hastily wiped.

"Dear pack members," Finn announced. "Thank you all for coming here to celebrate the most important woman in my li—"

His eyes caught mine, and he froze.

"Layla..." he murmured.

Many wolves followed his gaze, including Adeline.

Seeing me, she smiled brightly and walked down the stage.

"Layla!"

She wrapped her arms around me in a tight hug.

"I have missed you. Thank you for coming to my welcome-back party," she said sweetly.

Her eyes drifted towards Finn, and a shy smile graced her lips.

"Finn has taken such good care of me since I got back."

My knees weakened.

"Your mate is a true gentleman."

She knew he was my mate.

"Honestly," she continued softly, "I don't know what I would've done without him. Finn really likes me."

My nails dug into my palms. I glanced at Finn, but he looked away and gulped.

I forced a fake smile onto my face. "That's good, Adeline. At least you both are happy."

She smiled and walked back to where Finn stood.

The guilty look in his eyes disappeared into a soft smile the moment his gaze left me and returned to her.

"Alpha," a voice tore through the air. "When will you mark Luna Adeline? The pack needs a Luna."

Derek, Adeline, Finn, and I stiffened, an awkward air growing among us.

Finn opened his mouth to answer when suddenly...

A howl tore through the air.

Everyone froze, eyes wide in terror. The next second, more howls filled the air.

"ROGUES!"

Everyone charged in different directions, parents shifting and carrying their pups to safety.

Three large rogue wolves stormed into the arena, taking confident strides like they owned the place.

They bared their teeth, lifting and flinging away the pack warriors that attacked them like they weighed nothing.

I whimpered as one of the warriors' injured bodies landed close to where I was hiding. The largest rogue, who had been slowly walking towards the stage where Finn was, halted.

Cold prickled my skin as his eyes turned and zoned in on my neck. My teeth chattered as he snarled and lunged towards me.

Oh no. He must have seen Finn's mark. Though well hidden, this rogue was definitely powerful enough to sense I was the alpha's mate.

"F-Finn, help me," I whispered shakily, closing my eyes as it raised its claws.

Seconds later, when nothing happened, I opened my eyes.

A big brown wolf stood before me, blocking the path of the rogue. They growled at each other, no one backing down. Then the rogue made eye contact with me, turned, and ran off with the other two in tow.

My chest swelled. I knew it. Finn cared for me.

"Finn," I called excitedly, hugging him from behind. "You saved—"

My words caught in my throat as the wolf shifted back into his human form.

It wasn't Finn, but Derek.

The laughter of women and the screams of excited pups filled the air as we sat around the bonfire.Four months. That's how long I had been a part of Tristan's pack, which, just like he said, was home. The men had gone hunting while the women took time decorating the pack grounds for the pack's celebration.Suddenly, a couple of black SUVs pulled into the driveway of the pack house.A smirk tugged at my lips. Finally. Just as Tristan and I predicted.I remained seated, adjusting the collar of a little boy's suit while the atmosphere around me shifted. The entire courtyard fell silent, all eyes turning to the intruder."Layla..."Finn's voice was hoarse, as though he had cried until his throat gave out. Nothing like the calm, confident alpha I had left behind."Layla... please look at me."I rolled my eyes and turned. The moment my eyes landed on him, they widened in shock.Finn looked.... different. His always clean hair hung in messy strands across his face. His eyes were sunken, shado

Mates? Didn't Adeline say her mate died in a rogue attack?Adeline's eyes lit up. "You're really alive, Tristan. I still have my mate."A low scoff escaped his throat. His gaze moved from Adeline to Finn, then back to her.Adeline stood frozen in place for a few minutes, then, as though finally waking from a dream, she leapt forward."Tristan!"She extended her arms for a hug, but before she could touch him, Tristan stepped sideways. Her arms wrapped around the empty air. She stumbled, almost reaching the floor.“Don't make a fool of yourself, Adeline. I didn't come here for you."Adeline shook her head, her eyes glistening with unshed tears."W-what do you mean, Tristan?" she muttered.Tristan's face remained blank."Stop pretending. I'm just a rogue now, Adeline," he said mockingly. "No power, no wealth, no title."His lips curled into a sarcastic smile."We both know you can't survive with a nobody like me as your mate."I frowned, my mind racing to make sense of what was going on.

All eyes turned toward the source of the deep voice, mine included.Gasps rippled through the crowd as almost every wolf present openly admired the tall man striding confidently out of the thick, dark forest. His piercing blue eyes calmly swept over everyone before landing on me. Without hesitation, he walked straight toward me."It's nice to see you again, Miss Layla," he said, stopping an arm's length away.I frowned. Again?“We met a few days ago,” he muttered with a calm smile, as if he had read my thoughts. My brows squinted as I searched his face, letting out a gasp as the memory crashed into me.He was the rogue. The terrifying rogue who had stared at me during the attack on my birthday. My eyes widened, and I took two steps back.Even if I had a wolf now, there was no way my tiny Alana could take on someone half his size. His throat vibrated with a deep chuckle."Easy there, my lady. I'm not going to hurt you."I scoffed. “You almost tore me to pieces days ago.”He gave a cheek

I raised a brow."Because she lost her mate, Layla. She lost her mate."“Just like I've lost mine,” I said without skipping a beat.Finn's face paled. “Layla, please... I'm right here. You haven't lost me—”"I have." I cut him off mid-sentence, pointing to my neck, to the place where his mark had once been.“I gave you many chances, Finn. You just chose her over and over again.”Finn's body went completely still. "Layla, I... just... I never chose her. I thought you understood and supported me. When did I choose her over you?"A bitter laugh escaped my throat.“When, Finn? When didn't you choose her?”“You placed your mark where my hair would cover it, would hide it.”Finn shook his head, his eyes glistening.“You told the pack I was only working at your house as a live-in maid.”“No, Layla. It's because—”“You missed all my birthdays in five years, each time because something happened to her.”“Layla,” Finn whispered, shaking his head.“You protected her while your wolfless mate stood

Layla's POVI observed Finn, my face void of any emotion. Almost all my life, hearing his voice had made my heart flutter. But today, I felt nothing. "You tell me, dear Alpha. What does it look like I'm doing?" I retorted.Finn's jaw clenched. He wiggled his arms out of the grip of his warriors and staggered like a drunken man towards me.He seemed so weak that as soon as he reached me, his legs dropped him to the ground."You're leaving?" Finn rasped.“Obviously. Any problem with that?”A gasp rippled through the group of warriors and pack members who had gathered.Finn dragged himself closer. “No! You can't leave.”"And why not?"Finn blinked twice, as if he couldn't believe I was asking him that."Layla, what do you mean, why not? This is your home!"I shook my head as soon as the words landed. “You're wrong, Alpha. This is your home.”“Layla, don't call me that. It makes me look like a stranger.” Finn's voice shook. My eyes drifted behind him, sweeping through the crowd.“Alpha, h

Finn's POVThere were only a few minutes left before the opening of the festival when Adeline and I arrived at the grounds.I looked around quickly, my brows furrowed as I didn't see Layla or Derek anywhere around. My plan for today was to pick Layla up myself, but I asked Derek to do so when Adeline informed me some pack members were gossiping about her.Adeline's step slowed down as we approached the crowd of wolves. I turned to her, seeing her head lowered and her eyes filled with tears.I squeezed her hand, making her look at me. “Don't worry. No one will say anything about you while I'm here.”“Thank you, Finny. You always protect me. Without you, I won't survive,” she whispered softly.I smiled back at her, pinching her cheeks.“See how perfect the Alpha and Adeline are? I really hope they're mates,” a pack member said to her friends. As expected, Carl, my wolf, growled.I frowned.“What is wrong with you these days?” I asked him. He always did this whenever someone mentioned Ade
