Chapter 4

Author: MeRuYash
Layla's POV

I woke up as soon as the clock struck midnight on the day of the New Moon Festival.

The day Finn promised to announce our bond.

I folded and placed my last piece of clothing into my duffel bag.

“We're actually free!” Alana screamed excitedly in my head.

A small smile graced my lips. “Yes, we are. But why are you so happy? Won't you miss your mate?”

“Why wouldn't I be happy?” my wolf scoffed. “That Alpha is an idiot. I believe even his wolf is no exception.”

Our discussion was cut short by a knock sounding at the door.

I opened to see Finn, his face lit up in a bright smile. My chest fluttered, and my feet moved towards him before my brain could catch up.

He wrapped his arms around me and sniffed my neck. “You smell... different.”

I clenched my fists and wiggled out of his embrace. In a few hours, our mate bond would be

dissolved. I'll never feel drawn to him again.

“Maybe it's because you're excited about today,” he said, smiling. “You'll finally stand at my side as Luna.”

I arched a single brow and nodded.

His smile fell, and he sighed. “Layla, I am sorry. I know I've disappointed you a few times. But I promise that starting today, I'll never break any promises to you.”

I nodded stiffly. “I know.”

Finn held a single loose strand of my hair and twirled it in his fingers. “You chose a token from yesterday?”

“Yes. It just needs the elders' approval.”

His eyes lit up. “So you asked for a title in the pack? What rank or position did you ask for?”

His phone rang before I could reply, Adeline's voice echoing through the room.

“Finny... I'm so scared. Can you come?”

His back straightened. He quickly stepped away from me and picked up his jacket, not even noticing my half-packed bag on the floor.

“Layla, I'll have Derek drive you to the New Moon Festival. I promise this time, nothing will stop us.”

The door slammed shut behind him before I could nod.

I rolled my eyes and finished packing. Derek came to me a few minutes later.

“Luna.”

My gaze landed on the stack of documents in his hands.

It was time. I picked up my bag and followed him without a word.

The eight elders of the pack sat around the table, their expressions solemn.

After all, mate bond dissolution had only ever happened once in three centuries.

One by one, they reviewed the final token, with Finn's authorized stamp at the bottom.

The token of my freedom.

The head elder cleared his throat.

“Once this is completed, the mate bond dissolution cannot be reversed.”

“I understand.”

“For the final signing, we have summoned your mate.”

As expected, minutes passed, hours passed, and no sign of Finn.

I lowered my face, smiling. I knew he wouldn't come.

The head elder picked up his phone and dialed a number.

“What is it that requires my attention?” Finn barked into the phone.

“Alpha, Miss Layla is requesting approval of the—”

“Token, yes, I know. You're calling me for something so meager like it's a big deal. Approve it.”

The elder's face paled. Before he could say another word, Finn hung up.

The elders sighed and began signing. Within minutes, the final seal landed on the page.

A heart-wrenching pain suddenly broke out in my heart.

I gasped, clutching my chest as my knees hit the floor. His mark on my neck burned like a thousand lasers were being used on it.

My mind filled with thoughts of Finn, smiling at me, promising to choose me, marking me. Tears filled my eyes as the pain intensified. My nails dug into my skin, seeking relief.

Then... My vision went black.

Just for a few seconds.

As soon as I opened my eyes, I felt it. The familiar pull towards Finn, the way my body craved him, the desire to be accepted by him...

Was gone.

For the first time since my eighteenth birthday five years ago, I could no longer feel my mate.

My face broke into a smile, mixing with the tears already flowing.

“We're free,” Alana whispered.

“Yes, Alana, we are.”

A few minutes later, I stood at the southern border of Silvercrest Pack, my bag in hand.

Above me, the moon shone in all its glory. Behind me, music drifted through the pack.

The festival had begun.

I turned and looked at the pack one final time on what was supposed to be my day.

Then I whispered, “goodbye, Finn.”

The moment my left foot crossed the border, a terrifying howl shattered the calm of the night.

I froze.

A chill slid down my spine.

Finn.

Alana growled, “Layla, he knows. Run.”

As I moved to run, a hand clasped around mine, forcefully pulling me back into the pack.

I turned to see Derek, his face lowered, flanked by dozens of pack warriors.

“Luna...”

My grip tightened around my bag.

Derek gulped. “I'm sorry. The Alpha has ordered that nobody lets you leave.”

The laughter of women and the screams of excited pups filled the air as we sat around the bonfire.Four months. That's how long I had been a part of Tristan's pack, which, just like he said, was home. The men had gone hunting while the women took time decorating the pack grounds for the pack's celebration.Suddenly, a couple of black SUVs pulled into the driveway of the pack house.A smirk tugged at my lips. Finally. Just as Tristan and I predicted.I remained seated, adjusting the collar of a little boy's suit while the atmosphere around me shifted. The entire courtyard fell silent, all eyes turning to the intruder."Layla..."Finn's voice was hoarse, as though he had cried until his throat gave out. Nothing like the calm, confident alpha I had left behind."Layla... please look at me."I rolled my eyes and turned. The moment my eyes landed on him, they widened in shock.Finn looked.... different. His always clean hair hung in messy strands across his face. His eyes were sunken, shado

Mates? Didn't Adeline say her mate died in a rogue attack?Adeline's eyes lit up. "You're really alive, Tristan. I still have my mate."A low scoff escaped his throat. His gaze moved from Adeline to Finn, then back to her.Adeline stood frozen in place for a few minutes, then, as though finally waking from a dream, she leapt forward."Tristan!"She extended her arms for a hug, but before she could touch him, Tristan stepped sideways. Her arms wrapped around the empty air. She stumbled, almost reaching the floor.“Don't make a fool of yourself, Adeline. I didn't come here for you."Adeline shook her head, her eyes glistening with unshed tears."W-what do you mean, Tristan?" she muttered.Tristan's face remained blank."Stop pretending. I'm just a rogue now, Adeline," he said mockingly. "No power, no wealth, no title."His lips curled into a sarcastic smile."We both know you can't survive with a nobody like me as your mate."I frowned, my mind racing to make sense of what was going on.

All eyes turned toward the source of the deep voice, mine included.Gasps rippled through the crowd as almost every wolf present openly admired the tall man striding confidently out of the thick, dark forest. His piercing blue eyes calmly swept over everyone before landing on me. Without hesitation, he walked straight toward me."It's nice to see you again, Miss Layla," he said, stopping an arm's length away.I frowned. Again?“We met a few days ago,” he muttered with a calm smile, as if he had read my thoughts. My brows squinted as I searched his face, letting out a gasp as the memory crashed into me.He was the rogue. The terrifying rogue who had stared at me during the attack on my birthday. My eyes widened, and I took two steps back.Even if I had a wolf now, there was no way my tiny Alana could take on someone half his size. His throat vibrated with a deep chuckle."Easy there, my lady. I'm not going to hurt you."I scoffed. “You almost tore me to pieces days ago.”He gave a cheek

I raised a brow."Because she lost her mate, Layla. She lost her mate."“Just like I've lost mine,” I said without skipping a beat.Finn's face paled. “Layla, please... I'm right here. You haven't lost me—”"I have." I cut him off mid-sentence, pointing to my neck, to the place where his mark had once been.“I gave you many chances, Finn. You just chose her over and over again.”Finn's body went completely still. "Layla, I... just... I never chose her. I thought you understood and supported me. When did I choose her over you?"A bitter laugh escaped my throat.“When, Finn? When didn't you choose her?”“You placed your mark where my hair would cover it, would hide it.”Finn shook his head, his eyes glistening.“You told the pack I was only working at your house as a live-in maid.”“No, Layla. It's because—”“You missed all my birthdays in five years, each time because something happened to her.”“Layla,” Finn whispered, shaking his head.“You protected her while your wolfless mate stood

Layla's POVI observed Finn, my face void of any emotion. Almost all my life, hearing his voice had made my heart flutter. But today, I felt nothing. "You tell me, dear Alpha. What does it look like I'm doing?" I retorted.Finn's jaw clenched. He wiggled his arms out of the grip of his warriors and staggered like a drunken man towards me.He seemed so weak that as soon as he reached me, his legs dropped him to the ground."You're leaving?" Finn rasped.“Obviously. Any problem with that?”A gasp rippled through the group of warriors and pack members who had gathered.Finn dragged himself closer. “No! You can't leave.”"And why not?"Finn blinked twice, as if he couldn't believe I was asking him that."Layla, what do you mean, why not? This is your home!"I shook my head as soon as the words landed. “You're wrong, Alpha. This is your home.”“Layla, don't call me that. It makes me look like a stranger.” Finn's voice shook. My eyes drifted behind him, sweeping through the crowd.“Alpha, h

Finn's POVThere were only a few minutes left before the opening of the festival when Adeline and I arrived at the grounds.I looked around quickly, my brows furrowed as I didn't see Layla or Derek anywhere around. My plan for today was to pick Layla up myself, but I asked Derek to do so when Adeline informed me some pack members were gossiping about her.Adeline's step slowed down as we approached the crowd of wolves. I turned to her, seeing her head lowered and her eyes filled with tears.I squeezed her hand, making her look at me. “Don't worry. No one will say anything about you while I'm here.”“Thank you, Finny. You always protect me. Without you, I won't survive,” she whispered softly.I smiled back at her, pinching her cheeks.“See how perfect the Alpha and Adeline are? I really hope they're mates,” a pack member said to her friends. As expected, Carl, my wolf, growled.I frowned.“What is wrong with you these days?” I asked him. He always did this whenever someone mentioned Ade
