Chapter 3

Author: Arya
?

I spent the rest of the day handing over my work.

Near dusk, the Gamma came into my treatment room and placed two tickets to the Moonlight Theater on my desk.

“You know the Alpha. He isn’t good at apologizing, and sometimes he acts without thinking, but he does care about you.”

“You’ve wanted to see The Moon Goddess’s Daughter for ages. The moment he heard it was being performed, he reserved the best seats.”

“Nine tonight, outside the Moonlight Theater. Please be there, Charlotte.”

I studied the tickets thoughtfully.

I knew they were Callum’s way of extending an olive branch, and I understood that the show was his attempt to make amends.

I had no intention of going until the Gamma told me Callum also wanted to discuss our Marking Ceremony.

There were things that needed to be said face-to-face.

At nine, I arrived outside the Moonlight Theater.

Callum appeared in a long black coat.

But he was not alone. Isabella was right behind him.

When he saw me looking at her, he immediately explained.

“The envoys from the Silver Ridge Pack are still here. Isabella is not only the Beta’s daughter but also our Saintess. She needs to help me maintain relations between the two packs.”

The moment I saw them standing side by side, I suddenly had nothing left to say to the man in front of me.

I calmly entered the theater and took my seat.

During our nine years together, I had often wanted to enjoy the Moonlight Festival with Callum like any ordinary couple and see a performance at the theater together.

He would take my hand and coax me gently.

“Once I’ve persuaded the elders, we’ll be able to sit together openly.”

“I’m only trying to protect you. If I push them now, they’ll direct all their anger at you.”

Yet all these years, he had taken Isabella to every pack banquet and stood beside her while welcoming every visitor from Silver Ridge.

As the Saintess chosen to serve the Moon Goddess, she even presided over the Moonlight Festival and Marking Ceremonies.

The excuses Callum had once dressed up as protection echoed in my head, mocking the trust I had placed in him.

Halfway through the performance, Isabella suddenly leaned close to his ear.

“The Silver Ridge envoys were attacked by rogues at the border. The Beta needs us in the council chamber immediately.”

For years, Isabella had used her dual status as the Beta’s daughter and the pack’s Saintess to stand openly at Callum’s side. She attended council meetings with him and helped him handle pack affairs.

Everyone believed she belonged beside the Alpha.

Only I—the woman he had personally promised to make his Luna—was expected to wait in the shadows, unacknowledged.

“We have to go,” Callum told me. “You can make your own way home after the show.”

He did not ask what I wanted. He simply left with her.

I remained in my seat and quietly watched the performance to the end.

I would not suffer over a man who refused to keep his promises anymore. I would not be anxious every time he walked away.

Whatever time and love I had left would belong to me.

After the performance, I went to the pack hospital alone.

The pain from my failing wolf spirit made sleep impossible. Only injections of powerful painkillers could offer temporary relief.

I breathed in the hospital’s harsh medicinal scent while the television on the wall aired a report on the attack against the Silver Ridge envoys.

Callum and Isabella had handled the attack on the Silver Ridge envoys together. Standing side by side beneath the moonlight, they looked perfectly matched.

I fell asleep before the report ended, dimly aware of the phone in my pocket vibrating again and again.

It was late at night by the time I returned home.

From a distance, I saw a tall figure standing outside my door.

It was Callum.

Whenever he returned wounded from a dangerous border patrol, I had waited at the infirmary to treat him.

He was the Alpha. There were always too many people and too many responsibilities demanding his attention. He had never had time to wait for me.

I never imagined there would come a day when he would be the one waiting for me to come home.

I’ll make you Luna of the Blackstone Pack, and no one will ever laugh at you again.”I quickly recovered fro

Callum's POVCharlotte’s farewell ceremony was held the next day.Maya refused to let me come close. I could only follow the procession from a distance and watch as they buried her beneath the laurel tree. Her gravestone bore only her name. There was no mention of the Blackstone Pack. No mention of me.It was as if our nine years together had never existed.Once everyone had left, I approached the grave and placed the moonstone ring beside her photograph.“I’m here, Charlotte.”“I didn’t break my promise this time. Please open your eyes and look at me.”No one answered. The wind stirred the laurel tree, and a fallen leaf landed on my shoulder.I sat before her grave all night, memories of our life together flashing endlessly through my mind.I remembered her waking for the first time and asking my name with a pale face.I remembered her wearing a festival gown for the first time and nervously asking whether she looked beautiful.I remembered her standing under the Moon Goddess Tree for

Callum's POVI searched the borderlands for Charlotte for three full days. The patrol teams combed every nearby town, but there was no trace of her.Only after I found the registration record from when Charlotte had fled to the Blackstone Pack ten years ago did I remember the cottage her mother had left behind in Laurel Town.I gathered every medicine that might ease the effects of silver poisoning and traveled through the night. All the way there, I kept telling myself she would be fine.I had stood Charlotte up eight years in a row.She loved me so much. How could she bear to die and leave me behind? As long as I reached her, as long as I told her the Marking Ceremony was ready, she would come home with me and receive treatment. At daybreak, I finally saw the cottage. But a bundle of white laurel branches hung outside the gate—a sign used only when a member of the pack had died.I froze. The medicine case slipped from my hand and struck the ground.Glass shattered, and the medicines

Charlotte's POVAfter the train stopped at the border, I changed routes twice before finally reaching the house my mother had left me.The laurel tree in the yard was much taller than I remembered. When I pushed open the wooden door, dust drifted slowly through the sunlight. Everything inside looked exactly as it had when my mother left. The pain was too severe for me to sleep.I injected myself with a dose of painkillers. Not long after I lay down, hurried footsteps sounded outside.Maya pushed open the door and stared at me with red-rimmed eyes.“Why didn’t you tell me sooner, Charlotte?”Leaning against the headboard, I managed a faint smile.“What difference would it have made? You would only have started crying a few months earlier.”Maya bit her lip, but the tears fell anyway. We had met at the healing academy. After graduation, she joined another pack. We rarely saw each other over the years, but we never lost touch. She moved into the cottage without another word, cleaning the

Callum's POVI searched every room in the house.Charlotte’s medicines were gone. So were the healing notes she had spent years compiling and the photograph of us beside the bed, taken nine years ago.She had left nothing behind for me.My Gamma arrived soon afterward, breathless in the doorway.“Alpha, we found out what happened. Charlotte resigned from the infirmary yesterday afternoon. This evening, she boarded a train and left Blackstone territory.”The news exploded inside my head like thunder.I whipped around. “Where did she go?”“She got off at the border station. No one has seen her since.”I tightened my grip on the moonstone ring until its sharp edge bit into my palm.“Send every patrol team to the border. Find her.”“Search every station, inn, and infirmary near our territory. Leave nothing unchecked.”The Gamma hurried away to carry out my orders.I was about to follow when one of the pack members responsible for cleaning Moon Goddess Square rushed toward me.He handed me

Callum's POVIsabella stood before me in a silver-white gown, wearing the moonstone ring I had given Charlotte. The smile on her face froze.“Callum, it’s me. Aren’t you happy to see me?”I ignored her and looked past her, searching the crowd for Charlotte. She wasn’t there. The Moon Goddess Tree was surrounded by pack members, but the Omega I had stood up eight years in a row was nowhere to be seen.Isabella lowered her voice. “Callum, the entire pack is watching. Please don’t humiliate me in front of everyone.”I stared at the moonstone ring on her finger as the sense of foreboding inside me grew stronger.“Why are you wearing that ring?”“Charlotte gave it to me.”Isabella seemed to regain her confidence. She lifted her hand to show me the ring.“She finally realized that the one who isn’t loved is the one who doesn’t belong. She even gave me her place beneath the Moon Goddess Tree tonight.”“You have to admit, she can be surprisingly sensible sometimes...”An inexplicable fury rose
