Chapter 2

ผู้เขียน: Emma
I heard Garrett stop talking on the other end of the phone.

He remembered. Finally, he remembered it was my birthday.

But before he could speak, Max grabbed the phone from him.

"Maya, why are you being such a drama queen? You think everyone cares about fighting over men like you do?"

"I'm telling you to stop making trouble! If you mess up our pack business, can you deal with the consequences?!"

"Stop acting stupid and making other people fix your problems!"

He hung up on me.

Serena leaned against Garrett's chest, her smile soft and sweet as she patted Max's head, cooing gently:

"Come on, you all know what kind of wolf Maya is."

"Today is the most important day of my life. Be good, smile for me~"

Just like that, Max melted. His angry face turned soft again.

The group of wolves continued their lively celebration under the moonlight, singing and dancing.

Their happiness had nothing to do with me.

I stood alone in the dark like some joke that everyone forgot about.

I opened my phone and scheduled the abortion appointment.

Then I turned and walked away.

I had spent twelve years trying to make someone love me back.

I was done trying.

I returned to the hotel after midnight.

I took a shower and tried to sleep, but I kept tossing and turning.

Right before sunrise, my phone rang and woke me up.

The elder from the Healing Center spoke with anxiety in his voice:

"Maya, I heard there was a rogue wolf attack in that border territory you're in yesterday. You need to get there immediately and help treat the wounded!"

He hung up without waiting for my response.

I felt nothing but bitter irony. If I'd known this would happen, I never should have come.

Resigned to my fate, I got up and opened my phone.

But I saw Serena's new social media post.

Just one photo.

In it, Serena's small, pale hand was wrapped in Garrett's large, strong one.

Both wore the expensive healing gemstone rings on their ring fingers.

I stared at the old red mark on the back of Garrett's hand. Even though my heart felt dead, it still hurt to see it.

Garrett got that scar when he was eighteen. He jumped in front of me when my stepfather threw silver water at me. The doctors tried everything, but the mark never went away completely.

I always thought it meant he loved me.

I was so stupid.

The last bit of hope in my chest finally died.

I bought some medical supplies and called my lawyer friend to write up papers to break our mate bond.

When I returned to the border territory, it was a scene of devastation.

I put my feelings aside and started helping the hurt pack members.

Something felt off about this rogue attack. It looked like they did it in a hurry without planning.

I could still see pieces of last night's fireworks on the ground. A bad thought entered my head.

But the next second, someone kicked me hard from behind.

Caught off guard, I crashed forward onto the weapons left behind by the rogue wolves.

A sharp spear that was stuck in the dirt went right through my stomach.

Max's voice came from behind me. He sounded angry.

"Maya, are you some kind of creep? Did you actually follow us here to spy on us? Are you crazy?!"

I don't know when Max forgot what our real mom looked like before Serena's mother killed her.

Now he obeyed Serena's every command without question.

I didn't want this kind of brother anymore!

I gritted my teeth through the pain and gripped the spear shaft. Blood gushed out as I pulled the weapon from my body. Though my wolf quickly began healing the wound, I was already in agony. Before the wound could fully close, I walked up to him and slapped him hard across the face.

Max's head turned from the slap. He stared at me with wide eyes. He never thought I would hit him back.

Before he could say anything, I looked at him like he disgusted me.

"Don't think so much of yourself. Since you love Serena so much, just be her little dog."

"That slap was for everything you've done. We're not family anymore."

Ignoring his furious glare, I turned away to tend to my wound.

Not far away, Garrett approached with Serena, who looked deathly pale in his arms.

A flash of guilt crossed his face as he tried to explain:

"Maya, I forgot to wish you happy birthday last night."

"After I finish this mining work, I'll come back and celebrate with you..."

The green light turned on.Cars behind me honked impatiently, pulling me back from my memories.I took a deep breath and felt something shift inside my chest. Like a heavy chain finally breaking.I erased the last traces of emotion for Garrett from my heart. My hands were steady on the steering wheel now. No more trembling. No more pain.I drove forward. The road ahead was bright with sunshine, just like my future life.Three years later.I stood on the stage of the Alpha Council's grand auditorium, wearing a tailored black dress that commanded respect. The spotlight felt warm on my face as I accepted the Medal of Excellence for my blood bud grass research. This was a newly discovered herb that could rapidly stop bleeding and restore energy, greatly reducing warrior casualties in pack battles.Through years of relentless research, working eighteen-hour days in the lab, I had made this rare herb artificially cultivable. The audience erupted in applause. Hundreds of the most powerful wol

She ran to the Healing Center in a panic, her face streaked with tears and mascara.Serena's mother burst through the hospital doors like a woman possessed."Serena! You have to help us!" she screamed at her daughter's bedside. "Go beg Garrett to spare us! Tell him we're innocent!"But Serena was barely clinging to life herself, her face a mess of bandages and bruises from Garrett's brutal attack. When she heard her mother's demands, something inside her snapped."Are you insane?" Serena's voice came out as a harsh rasp. "Look at me! He nearly killed me! And you want me to beg him for mercy?""This is all your fault! If you hadn't colluded with rogue wolves, I wouldn't be wanted by the Alpha Council!"Serena's mother's face twisted with rage. "How dare you blame me! You knew about our plan yourself!""You benefited from everything we did! All those gifts, all that luxury! You lived like a princess because of our schemes!""After all these years of raising you, feeding you, giving you e

Just one sentence made his face turn deathly pale."Do you deserve my forgiveness?"The words hung in the air like a death sentence.Max's whole body trembled as he collapsed to the ground, his sunken eyes filled only with despair and regret."I... I..." he stammered, but no words came out that could possibly justify what he'd done. His hands shook violently as the weight of his betrayals crashed down on him.He began nervously tearing at his dry, peeling lips until they bled profusely, but he didn't stop. The physical pain was nothing compared to the agony in his chest."Sister, please," he gasped between ragged breaths. "I know I don't deserve anything from you. I know I'm worthless."I turned to walk away, but his voice cracked with raw desperation."Wait! Please don't leave me like this!"I didn't want to waste any more time on him, but I heard his persistent voice behind me:"It's okay, sister. You're my only family now."His voice was barely a whisper, broken and hollow."You don

Hearing this, Garrett's whole body trembled, then he smiled bitterly and nodded:"Yes, we're the two beasts who've been bullying Maya all along."His voice was hollow, defeated. The weight of his betrayals crashed down on him like a physical blow."I destroyed the only person who ever truly loved me," he whispered, more to himself than anyone else.Serena's mother thought she had convinced Garrett and said smugly:"Exactly! So just pretend you didn't hear anything."She stepped closer, her voice dripping with false confidence."I might as well tell you—we bribed a rogue wolf specifically to hurt Maya in that attack. We wanted her gone permanently."Her eyes gleamed with malicious satisfaction."You'd better be smart about this, or you won't even be able to keep your Alpha position!"A vicious look flashed in Garrett's eyes. The Alpha in him finally awakened, rage building in his chest like a wildfire."You underestimate what this Alpha is capable of."His voice dropped to a dangerous g

The mention of "Serena" brought Garrett back to his senses. He blinked hard, trying to shake off the shock of seeing that small skeleton in the box.Maya's child. His child. The reality of what he'd lost hit him like a physical blow, but he forced himself to focus. He forced a smile and nodded, pulling his gaze away from that delivery box."You're right," he said hoarsely. "Serena needs me."He followed Max to the hotel room where Serena was resting. Before coming, Garrett had told everyone else not to reveal anything—he wanted to give Serena a surprise."She'll be so happy to see you," Max said excitedly. "She's been asking about you all day.""The healers said she shouldn't be stressed, so this will be perfect."But just as they reached the room door, they heard bursts of laughter.Garrett paused, his hand on the doorknob. Something about that laughter felt wrong. The door was left slightly ajar. Garrett peered through the gap and froze.Serena, who in his memory was always pale and

Until I returned to the pack alone, Garrett never called me again. Not once. Not even to ask if I was safe after the rogue attack that left me nearly dead.He seemed to think I was just throwing a tantrum.Like some kid who would come running back to him when I got tired of being mad.I found out from social media that he was taking Serena everywhere. They went shopping, picked out jewelry, and sent invites to people - like they were the ones getting married.I saw the pictures on Instagram. Serena posted a selfie with a huge diamond ring. The caption said "Shopping for the big day!"Another post showed them at a fancy restaurant. Garrett was feeding her cake across the table. The comments under the photos made me sick."You two are so cute together!""Can't wait for the wedding!""Perfect couple goals!"But I didn't let it stop me. I went to the Healing Center and asked to transfer to the Alpha Council's Herbal Research Center. The application process was straightforward. My research
