Chapter 4

Author: Alyssa J
I was woken up by a phone call at 3 AM.

"Hey Sophia, Lucas is wasted. Can you come pick him up? I'll send you the location - get here fast!"

I stayed silent, but they forgot to hang up.

Lucas's familiar voice drifted through.

"Bet you anything she'll come crawling over here to get me real quick."

His buddies burst out laughing: "Didn't you say she's pissed about number 18? Might be a long shot this time, man!"

Lucas snorted: "She's just jealous, trying to get my attention. That's what chicks do."

"Remember that time you lost truth or dare and gave her a fake location? Middle of winter, 2 AM, she ran all the way up the mountain and waited there all night, nearly froze to death! And after that, one 'sorry babe, I was drunk' and she wasn't mad anymore?"

"Sophia's not just obsessed - she's basically Lucas's damn pet dog!"

Listening to their mocking laughter, I felt strangely calm.

I should've seen through this ages ago. If Lucas hung out with trash like this, how could he be anything but trash himself?

I hung up and sent a text.

【Whoever lost their dog should go find it themselves.】

Turned off my phone and closed my eyes.

I felt nothing.

Lucas lost face in front of his boys and wanted to take it out on me, but when he got to my old place, he found out I was long gone.

He tried calling me only to discover I'd blocked him.

【Sophia, where the hell did you go? You've got one day to come back and apologize, or I'm marrying someone else. Didn't you always want to marry me?】

I got Lucas's message while staring in amazement at the man in front of me.

Light rain was falling, and the man held an umbrella with elegant grace, looking like some kind of aristocrat straight out of a movie.

Beneath his dark tousled hair, those piercing steel-blue eyes were locked on me like he was afraid I'd vanish any second.

His jaw was sharp enough to cut glass, and even in the dim light, I could see the powerful build of his shoulders beneath his perfectly tailored coat.

"Aren't you supposed to be overseas handling the pack business?"

"Nothing's more important than you."

Marcus's words were earnest, every syllable dead serious.

I could feel his sincerity, so I hesitated: "How much do you know about my situation?"

"Everything."

"So you know I was with someone for six years?"

"He never deserved you."

"Why wait for me all these years but never make a move?"

"My heart chose you, but I was raised better than to steal another man's she-wolf. So I waited for you, Sophia."

I thought this man was kind of crazy.

"Just waited? What if it never worked out?"

Marcus stepped closer, leaning down toward me, his eyes soft: "I've always been lucky. From the moment I first saw you, I knew you'd end up by my side eventually."

I suddenly laughed.

"Has anyone ever told you you're pretty confident, Marcus?"

Marcus raised an eyebrow: "And?"

I took a deep breath: "So mark me. Let's get our mating certificate today."

After getting our mating certificate, I started a new life. Everything felt different now, but Lucas still believed I was the same person who used to wait around for him.

He was convinced I was just throwing a tantrum.

The guy who never once made our relationship Facebook official suddenly started posting constantly about him and Linda. Every day brought a new photo of their perfect relationship.

Then came the post that made my phone buzz with notifications from mutual friends:

【This diamond ring could've belonged to someone else, but disobedient pet dogs need to be taught a lesson.】

The photo showed him holding Linda's hand. That flashy diamond ring on her finger looked pathetic more than anything. The comments were full of people asking who the "someone else" was.

My phone rang. It was Lucas.

"Did you see my post?" His voice carried that familiar smugness. "That ring was supposed to be yours, Sophia. But you had to go and act out."

"I don't care about your ring, Lucas."

"Come on. We both know you're dying inside right now." He laughed. "Linda's sweet, but she's not you. She doesn't know me like you do."

I hung up.

Minutes later, he messaged me:

【I'm taking Linda around the world for engagement photos. You better think long and hard about your attitude. When I get back in six months, if you're good, I might consider swapping her out for you.】

I stared at those words. Six months ago, I would have cried. I would have begged him to reconsider. I would have promised to be better.

Now? I felt nothing but disgust.

I deleted my account and reported Lucas to the Alpha Council for the kidnapping he'd orchestrated.

I frowned. What was he trying to say with that? Trying to mess with Marcus's head?Marcus laughed coldly and turned around, his handsome face dismissive. "You think I need you to tell me that? I waited five years for Sophia. She's my hard-won treasure, and I'll cherish her for life.""Unlike some trash who only regrets after throwing away something precious."His voice was ice cold, each word cutting like a blade.Lucas flinched like he'd been slapped. His face went white."Five years?" Lucas whispered. "You knew her... before?""I've known everything about you since the beginning," Marcus said with a cruel smile. "Every time you made her cry. Every time you chose someone else. Every time you took her for granted.""I was there, watching, waiting for the day she'd finally see what you really were."Lucas's legs gave out completely. Linda had to catch him to stop him from falling."That's impossible," Lucas stammered. "She never mentioned you. Not once.""Because she didn't know," Marcu

Lucas's face went ashen when he heard Alpha Clark's words. The color drained completely from his cheeks. His mouth opened and closed like he was trying to speak, but no words came out.His mom started screaming. "Honey, what are you saying? You want to sever mate bond with me?! We just got mated a few months ago!"Her voice was shrill and desperate. She grabbed Alpha Clark's arm, her nails digging into his skin."You can't do this to me! I've been good to you! I've done everything you wanted!""Shut up!"Alpha Clark turned and slapped her across the face. The sound echoed through the conference room."It's all because of you, you bitch! How dare you insult Alpha Lane's mate? Who the hell do you think you are? Get out with your son!"His face was purple with rage. Veins bulged on his forehead."Say one more word and I'll have your son's legs broken before he leaves!"His pack was about to be ruined now. He could've killed this she-wolf. It was all their fault! Years of building relation

Lucas was in shock. He just stood there like a zombie. The flowers he'd brought were scattered on the floor next to that diamond ring. The slap mark on his face was bright red, making him look like a complete joke."This can't be happening," he mumbled to himself.Alpha Clark looked at him with cold eyes. The disappointment was written all over his face."You told me she was your girlfriend," Alpha Clark hissed. "You said she was carrying your child.""She is! She was!" Lucas's voice cracked. "Something's wrong here. She's lying."Lucas's mom panicked. Her meal ticket was slipping away right in front of her eyes."This is all a misunderstanding," she said quickly. "Sophia's just confused. She's been with my son for years."Linda immediately rushed over and grabbed Lucas's arm. "Alpha Clark, even if Sophia's married now, she was with Lucas for six years! Like his mom said, she's damaged goods!"She was practically vibrating with excitement. Like she'd figured out the perfect plan."Her

"Sophia, marry me. We were together for six years, and you had my baby. I'm willing to make it official."He got down on one knee right there in front of everyone. Holding up that same diamond ring from two years ago. Everyone in the conference room was stunned. Twelve pack officials sitting around the conference table, all staring with their mouths open."Lucas, what are you doing?" one of them whispered. But Lucas ignored them. His eyes were fixed on me with this desperate intensity."I know I hurt you. I know I made mistakes. But we can fix this. We belong together, Sophia. You know we do."I felt sick to my stomach, like I'd swallowed a fly. The audacity of this man was unbelievable."You're insane," I said."No, I'm finally thinking clearly." He held the ring higher. "This should have been yours from the beginning. I should never have given it to anyone else."The pack officials were shifting uncomfortably. Some were pulling out their phones, probably texting about this disaster.

"Let's talk. I brought Linda too."He blocked my door, pulling Linda out from behind him like she was some kind of peace offering. She looked uncomfortable, fidgeting with her hands and avoiding eye contact."I'll have her apologize to you. Please stop being mad, okay?"His voice was almost pleading. A humility I'd never heard before. It was pathetic."Sophia, I know what happened back then hurt you." He stepped closer, his eyes desperate. "I can apologize, and I'll make Linda apologize too. Please forgive me?"I looked at Linda. She was totally different from two years ago too.Gone was that cocky confidence she'd had when she was stealing my boyfriend. Now she looked pathetic, meek and submissive. Her hair was unwashed, her clothes wrinkled. Prison had been hard on Lucas, but apparently being with him afterward had been harder on her."Linda," I said, crossing my arms. "You look terrible."She flinched.I shook my head. "This is the guy you fought so hard to steal? Was it worth it? H

With Marcus pushing things along, the Alpha Council moved fast. Lucas was arrested the next day.No six-month world tour for him. He got two years in silver prison.Marcus called me that evening. "It's done. He won't be bothering you anymore.""Thank you." I meant it."How are you feeling?""Free," I said. When we met again, it had been two years. Marcus was now Alpha King, and I'd become the Female Alpha managing the entire northern territories.During an inspection of the subordinate territories, I was shocked to discover that one of the territory Alphas was Lucas's stepfather. "Ma'am, there's been a change in staff," my assistant informed me as we pulled up to the territory headquarters. "The previous Alpha is back from... leave."Leave. That was one way to put prison time. When I saw Lucas again, he looked different. His shoulders weren't as broad. His face was thinner. But it was his eyes that shocked me most. They were hollow. Missing that old arrogant confidence that used to m
