Nat's POV

I slump into my chair after finishing my last check and take a long deep breath. My phone buzzes on the table right at this moment.

Sighing, I lean forward to glance at the reminder on the screen.

Erina Popov's birthday.

A high-class lady. She was my patient, now recovered, and is throwing a pool party to celebrate both.

Closing my eyes, I press my fingers against my throbbing temple. Last night, it’s safe to say I didn’t catch a wink, and now the consequences are clear.

I shake my head as if to chase away the exhaustion that fills my bones, my gaze still fixed on the screen. Attending wasn’t part of my plan. Leaving my old life behind means also letting go of parties and anything high class in general. Sending a gift to Erina would have been perfect and polite.

My hand tightens into a fist.

No.

I change my mind.

If I am going back, I won’t crawl home. I’ll make an entrance, and this party is the first step.

I check the time, my eyes shining. There is still plenty of it. I give my supervisor a call immediately.

She pauses after hearing my request. "Did something happen? This is unlike you."

I truthfully explain that I’m heading to a friend's birthday party, and her relief is obvious. "This is the first time you've ever asked. Thought you were in trouble. Go. Have fun, and make friends."

After the call ends, my position doesn’t change.

The word friend flashes in my mind, alongside his face. I have no idea why I’m remembering him again now—the only person I could ever call my friend—the only one who bawled their eyes out when I was coming here, the only person to ever understand me so perfectly, as if we share the same mind.

It’s difficult to adapt without his care when I first got here. Later, I get used to being treated like a ghost. My entire world shrinks to just Ivan. My Omega status is like an invisible wall, keeping everyone else out. I’m alone.

Soon… we will meet again.

After packing my things, I head to the pack shopping center.

The afternoon sun casts streaks across the pavement. My eyes linger on the beautiful summer gowns, the heels, and the luxurious bags. While listening to the sales assistant's cheerful description behind me, one outfit catches my eye. The soft pink tweed two-piece has a corset-shaped top with a bold sweetheart neckline and a ribbon tied in a crisscross at the back. The matching mini skirt hugs the waist and ends in a lightly pleated hem that gives the whole look a fluttery appearance.

"This," I point immediately.

"You have a good eye, Miss." She beams, taking it down. "Just two pieces of this came from the headquarters."

After checking out, I ask, “You do makeovers here?”

“We do!”

By the time I leave the store, I feel like a different person altogether—or like the person I used to be before I came here. The light yet polished makeup makes my pale face appear rosier, and my under-eye bags disappear. My lips gleam with nude lipstick, and my brown hair cascades in gentle waves over my shoulders, framing my face just the way I like it.

[You look like yourself now.] Noelle whispers, her voice filled with appreciation.

Smiling, I walk to the next shop. The boutique has Erina’s gift packed already. I had planned to have it delivered, but since I’ve decided to go, I’m now picking it up.

The clerk hands me the neatly packaged box with familiarity and leans closer, smiling. “Miss Natasha, there’s also a piece of jewelry reserved for you.”

I blink, surprised. “For me?”

She nods. “Yes. Reserved under your name. It arrived this morning. Must be a special gift.”

Who could possibly send it?

I rack my brain.

Ivan?

The thought feels foolish as soon as it forms.

Impossible. He’s never the type to send a gift unless there’s an occasion.

Then… it’s probably my father.

With that thought, I open the box. Inside is a necklace nestled against black velvet.

The chain is delicate rose gold. The pendant is stunning: a smooth, pink teardrop stone that looks like a frozen tear. Tiny diamonds surround it, sparkling as if holding their own light.

"It looks perfect," I whisper, my voice cracking. This is more than a gift. It feels like a message: You are still precious.

"Should I put it on for you?" the clerk asks.

I nod, unable to speak. The cool stone feels especially soothing against my skin. In the mirror, the pink teardrop glows against my neck, matching my dress perfectly.

How can he be so good to me?

After leaving the boutique, I head to the venue.

My heels click on the marble floor of the Popov Estate. Music thumps through the air, the festive vibration vividly felt even before reaching the door. The guards glance at the invitation, then at me, before nodding. "Welcome, Miss Natasha."

The laughter and cheers grow closer, and expensive perfume hits me all at once. Guests are everywhere, lounging by the pool, sipping champagne, chatting in small clusters.

My eyes sweep around for Erina, until they snag on someone else.

[Why is he here?] Noelle groans, sounding annoyed.

My whole body freezes, turning as stiff as stone. Across the crowded room, Ivan’s icy blue eyes are already locked on mine. My gaze drops, and my breath catches. His arm drapes possessively around a woman’s waist.

Nat's POVThalie crosses her legs, her voice filled with arrogance even though she is smiling. "I hope you realize now that I'm more than qualified for this position." The supervisor gives an awkward chuckle. “Well! Natasha will be with us for one more month. Plenty of time for you to learn the ropes together.”“She is planning to resign?” Ivan speaks, his gaze snapping to me, his voice laced with surprise. I ignore him, instead flipping through the files in my hand.He averts his gaze when the supervisor answers. “Yes. Unfortunately. She is one of our hardest workers. I’ll miss her dearly. But one can’t stand in the way of greatness. Wherever Natasha goes, she’ll excel. I know that." Thalie snorts, the sound filled with ridicule. The supervisor’s gaze moves between us, and one could almost see the question mark on her forehead.I shake my head. “I’ll take my leave now.”The supervisor nods, yet Thalie raises her hand. “How about I come with you? I would love to observe." Ivan qui

[Can I safely assume this woman has a fucking homing beacon on us?] Noelle mutters, her voice thick with annoyance. An ominous feeling settles in my stomach, dark and foreboding. My fingers instinctively curl into fists. It can’t be… right? The supervisor’s face brightens with a professional smile. “Perfect timing! Come in.”The door opens, and my vision blur. The supervisor is still smiling. “Natasha, that’s the—”“The new intern,” I finish for her.She nods, to my horror. “Why, yes. Thalie Noor, our new intern. She’ll be shadowing you.”I snap. “Does she even possess the basic qualifications for this ward, or is this just another privileged placement?”“What do you mean by that?” Thalie’s voice echoes behind me, filled with confusion. Ivan’s arm is wrapped possessively around her waist. They both stare at me; his expression a mix of warning and disappointment, hers wide-eyed innocence. The supervisor smiles awkwardly. “Natasha isn’t feeling well today. Please excuse her.” With that,

Nat’s POV“Defensive. You keep acting like a shrew and all, even insulting Thalie. Look, I actually wanted to ask you; since you’re a doctor, regarding what Thalie should take for her cold. But you just wouldn’t pick up your phone to be helpful.”The absurdity of his words makes my stomach churn even harder. I stare into his eyes, fingers digging into my nails. “Do you seriously have no idea who pushed me into the pool and how I caught this cold, huh?”He looks at me, puzzled.I take a deep breath, trying to regulate my emotions. “You know what? You’re a lost cause.”I turn sharply, desperate for space and clean air, but he grabs my sleeve again. His pull is forceful, and I’m caught off guard. His other arm instinctively shoots out, catching me around the waist. His firm grip, once familiar, now feels like a violation that makes my skin crawl.“Where are you going without answering my question?” he demands, voice hard.I want to say something, snap back, shove his hand away, remind hi

Nat’s POVI take a cab to the hospital, glancing at the wristwatch where it displays how late I am. Thirty minutes late.I bite my lips and brush my hair back before entering the building, waving at a few colleagues along the way.As soon as I check in, my colleague with the previous shift immediately wave. “Nat, you’re here.”I walk over with a smile. “Good morning, Sera. Apologies for the delay.”She yawns, stretching as she gets up. “It's okay…” Her eyes linger on my face and her voice trails off. “Why do you look so pale uh? And your voice also sounds thick. Do you catch a cold or something?”“Just a mild one. I need to prep for my first patient. I’ll inform the supervisor on my way.”Sera nods in understanding. “Patient Freya?”I rock my head in a nod.She sighs, closing the chart in front of her with a thump. “She only ever settles for you. Heavens know why.”I smile slightly before walking to my office. I have a small window before the appointment.I was in too much of a rush a

Nat's POVMy hand quietly forms a clench beside me, nails digging into my palm as I listen to the confession of his 'pure' friend.Noelle's disgust couldn’t be any more obvious. [What a shameless worm.]Ivan's soft voice echoes from the other side, the harshness he has when he speaks to me? Gone. Like it never exists.Instead, all that is left is a tinge of surprise as he calls out to her. “Thalie...”There is rustling on the other side, a groan, the sound of skin touching, then Thalie continues. “I love him, Nat. And I wouldn’t be a coward who hides her feeling. He treats me well. When I am sick, he is by my side. When things are dark for me, he doesn’t hesitate to lit it up with his presence. He… is the light that's shining in my heart. I’m being sincere right now. I love him as a person. And as a friend.”The audacity to spit all this and then add the friendship label catches my tongue for several seconds. And when my voice recovers, all that slips past my lips is a hoarse word.“A

  • Alpha's Regret After I Left    Chapter 5: Thalie's confession

Nat’s POVThe evening air bites with a chill the sunny afternoon never has. Each gust through the cab's slightly open window feels like cold needles to my sinus, sending me into another sneeze.“Bless you,” the driver murmurs for the fifth time. I massage the bridge of my nose, muttering a thank you under my breath. My gaze drifts to the window, where beautiful, colorful streaks of lights spread, buildings piercing into the horizon. People pass by in vignette, their figures blurred, each in their own, different world.I can’t help but wonder.Could any of their worlds be as messed up as mine? This tangled, shattered, and miserable?[Stop thinking about it.
