The soft hum of the SUV’s engine settled into the background as we drove through the quiet, snowy streets of Ocean City. Beside me, Elara had finally succumbed to sleep, her head resting awkwardly against the cold window.

Her brows furrowed slightly, even in rest, as if her dreams offered no reprieve from the turmoil of her waking life. My wolf watched her closely, both observant and oddly subdued, as if its usual dominance had been tempered into something more calculating.

The streetlights illuminated her face in fleeting intervals, casting shadows over the sharp lines and exhaustion that clung to her features like a second skin. She didn’t stir, though her hands twitched faintly in her lap, clutching the small plush wolf she seemed to carry everywhere. The sight of it irritated my wolf—it was a symbol of weakness and yet, deeply personal.

“Increase the heating,” I ordered Nathan without looking back. My voice remained soft, though my wolf’s edge lingered beneath it.
