Penelope’s POV

I ended the call with Edward and let the phone slip from my numb fingers. It clattered against the gravel, the sound sharp in the chaos around me. Parents clutched each other near the damaged building, but everything felt distant, muffled, like I was underwater.

The evidence bag containing Dominic’s pack emblem sat on the command table where Rodolf had left it..

Not Dominic. Please, not Dominic.

My legs gave out. I sank onto a nearby equipment crate, my whole body shaking. The man I’d once loved—the man I’d been starting to trust again despite everything—had orchestrated my daughter’s kidnapping.

That day’s visit played through my mind like a nightmare reel. Dominic arriving with his convoy, that concern on his face when he’d asked about the training facility. I’d thought he was being supportive, professional. Instead, he’d been what? Scouting? Planning?

“No,” I whispered to the empty air. “He wouldn’t do this. Not to Debbie.”

But the evidence didn’t care about my desper

Penelope’s POVI reviewed performance reports from yesterday’s exercises at the training facility. One hundred and thirty women had participated in advanced combat drills, showing marked improvement. Progress that should have filled me with satisfaction felt hollow as my mind wandered to more personal complications.“Commander?” Nora approached carrying evaluation forms. “The morning session results.”I accepted the paperwork and spread it across my desk. Test scores, improvement metrics, readiness assessments—all the data needed to justify continued expansion of female combat training programs.“How did the new recruits perform?”“Better than expected. Sarah and Emma both exceeded baseline requirements for weapons handling. Jessica’s showing real aptitude for tactical leadership.” Nora settled into the chair across from my desk. “The program’s working, Penelope. Women are proving they can match male fighters in almost every category.”“Almost every category?”“Raw physical strength in

Kelsey’s POVThe afternoon nursery visit had become my favorite part of each day.Alexander lay on his play mat, reaching for colorful toys. He was becoming more aware of his surroundings, tracking movement and responding to familiar voices.Footsteps in the hallway announced another visitor. Debbie appeared in the doorway carrying a small bag and wearing the serious expression she used when tackling important responsibilities.“I brought supplies,” she announced, setting the bag beside Alexander’s crib. “Books for story time, and some toys that are good for his development.”“You’ve been researching baby care?”“I asked the librarian at Rainbow Claw for books about taking care of little brothers. She said reading to babies helps their brains grow faster.”I smiled. Debbie’s genuine desire to help her brother was exactly what I’d hoped to encourage, but her innocent enthusiasm made me feel guilty about the motives behind my encouragement.“Reading is wonderful for babies. Would you lik

Dominic’s POVThe morning briefing room felt smaller than usual as I spread intelligence reports across the polished table. Border patrol schedules, supply manifests, casualty reports from the latest Rogue encounters—everything demanding immediate attention while my mind struggled to focus.Three hours of sleep wasn’t enough to function properly, but closing my eyes brought memories of Penelope that made rest impossible. Her taste, her scent, the way we’d moved together two nights ago.A knock interrupted my attempts at concentration. Nick entered carrying fresh coffee and a stack of personnel files.“Thought you might need this,” he said, setting the coffee beside my papers. “You look like hell.”“Thanks for the honesty.” I took a grateful sip of the dark brew. “What do you have?”“Background checks on the new security personnel, updated patrol rotations for this week, and recommendations for the supply convoy routes.” Nick settled into the chair across from me. “Also, I’ve been think

Kelsey’s POVThree days had passed since Nick’s offer, and I still hadn’t given him an answer. I kept mulling it over as I walked toward the nursery for my afternoon visit with Alexander. The guards nodded respectfully but watched my every step. House arrest meant constant surveillance, every movement monitored and recorded for security reports that would influence my eventual fate.“Hello, my beautiful boy,” I whispered, lifting Alexander from his crib.He smiled up at me, tiny fingers grasping at my hair. At three months old, he was growing so fast that each visit revealed new developments. Stronger neck muscles, more alert eyes, the beginning of personality traits that would shape the man he’d become.“Mama’s here,” I murmured against his soft cheek. “Mama loves you more than anything in the world.”I knew that if I refused Nick’s offer, I’d serve my full sentence while others made decisions about Alexander’s daily life, his training, his exposure to influences I might not approve o

Nick’s POVI watched Alexander sleep in his crib. Three months old and already showing signs of the intelligence that would make him a formidable leader someday. My son. My heir. My path to claiming everything the Darkwood Pack could offer.Footsteps approached down the hallway. Kelsey appeared in the doorway, walking carefully and quietly to avoid waking the baby.House arrest had made her cautious about every action, every sound, every moment of her restricted existence.“How is he?” she whispered.“Perfect. Growing stronger every day.” I moved away from the crib, gesturing for her to follow me to the sitting area where we could talk without disturbing Alexander.“The guards said you wanted to see me about something important,” Kelsey said, settling into the rocking chair that had become her usual spot during permitted visits.“Several important things, actually.” I pulled out my phone and showed her a message thread. “The Council is reviewing your case again. Recent developments in

Julian’s POVLeonardo’s shop occupied a narrow building in the neutral zone, squeezed between a pawn shop and a tattoo parlor. Neon signs cast colored light across the pavement as I approached the back entrance. The door opened before I could knock.“Punctual,” Leonardo grunted, stepping aside to let me enter. “Good trait for someone playing with death.”His workshop smelled of metal shavings and chemical residue. Shelves lined the walls with silver weapons, enhancement drugs, and ritual components that human society pretended didn’t exist.“Your order’s ready,” he said, leading me to a workbench where three packages waited. “Silver needles forged during the last eclipse. Pain compounds tested on volunteers who actually survived. Lunar herbs grown in soil that’s seen enough Alpha blood to qualify as sacred.”I examined each package carefully. They had warnings printed on them in multiple languages.“Dosage instructions are included,” Leonardo continued. “Follow them exactly, or you’ll
