Lucy finally reached her basement room and paused, taking in the grimy scene. Dust floated thickly in the stale air, clinging to the cracked walls. Insects crawled freely across the floor — and sometimes even across her skin. Once, she would have screamed. Now, she barely noticed.

She bent down and grabbed a few pieces of clothing, her movements mechanical. Sitting down on the edge of the creaky bed, Lucy stared blankly at the room she had been trapped in for so long.

Everything was changing so quickly.

After years of nothing but misery... could she really be free in just a few months?

Her hand trembled slightly as she remembered her small pouch. She had hidden it deep inside an old dusty vase. Her tiny savings — enough, she hoped, to buy herself a real start.

Lucy crossed the room and reached inside the vase. Her fingers brushed the rough fabric just as footsteps echoed down the basement stairs.

She stiffened.

"Well, well. Looks like the dumb bitch is packing to go somewhere," Gina’s mocking voice rang out, followed by the high-pitched laughter of her minions.

Lucy straightened her spine. She wouldn't give them the satisfaction of seeing her scared.

"I've been reassigned," Lucy said calmly, turning to face them. "I'm just packing my stuff."

Gina’s sharp eyes locked onto the pouch in Lucy’s hand.

Without hesitation, she lunged forward and ripped it away.

Lucy reached for it instinctively, but two of Gina’s friends seized her arms, holding her in place. Pain flared in her bruised muscles.

"Please, Gina, I’m begging you," Lucy whispered desperately. "That’s my money. I saved it. Please."

Gina threw her head back in cruel laughter.

"And you think I believe that, you little murderer?" she spat. "You stole this from the pack, you filthy thief!"

The first slap came hard and fast, snapping Lucy’s head to the side. Another followed. And another. Gina’s perfectly manicured nails raked dangerously close to Lucy’s eyes, and for a terrifying second, Lucy thought she might lose her sight.

Finally, Gina stepped back, tossing her bleached blonde hair over her shoulder. Her friends kicked Lucy’s legs out from under her, forcing her to kneel.

"Listen closely, you pathetic bitch," Gina hissed, her face inches from Lucy’s. "Don't even look at my Jayden. He’s mine. Next time you try something, I’ll rip your throat out."

With a satisfied sneer, Gina tore Lucy’s pouch apart, scattering the shredded remains of her money across the floor.

The pieces fluttered around Lucy like ashes.

Without another word, Gina and her minions turned and sauntered away, laughing.

Lucy remained on her knees for a long moment, breathing shakily.

Her dream of escape seemed farther away than ever.

When Lucy finally made it back upstairs, she knocked quietly at Jo’s door.

"Come in," Jo called.

Lucy stepped inside, her face still swollen and red from the assault. Jo’s expression hardened instantly.

"Was it Gina again?" she asked, already knowing the answer.

Lucy gave a small, broken nod.

"You should fight back," Jo said, trying to keep her voice gentle. "You’ve got Beta blood, just like she does. You’re not weak."

Lucy offered a bitter smile.

"It’s useless, Jo. I fought back once, and the beatings tripled. There’s no point. Besides..." Her voice cracked. "She destroyed all my savings. I have nothing left. Even if we run... how will I survive?"

Tears welled up in her eyes. She covered her face, trying — and failing — to hold them in.

Jo’s heart twisted painfully.

She should have helped Lucy long ago.

She would help her now.

"Listen," Jo said firmly. "When we leave, I’ll pay for both of us until you find your feet. You can pay me back later. Deal?"

Lucy hesitated, searching Jo’s face for any sign of pity — but found only sincerity.

Slowly, she nodded.

Jo grinned and bumped her shoulder lightly against Lucy’s.

"Good. And for the record? No crying allowed in this room. Now — what are your hobbies?"

"I don't have any," Lucy murmured, her voice barely above a whisper.

"Well, I like reading—"

The door slammed open.

"What in the holy Moon Goddess’s name is she doing here?" Polly demanded, glaring at Lucy.

"Pols," Jo said brightly, covering the tension with forced cheer, "I asked her to stay. There’s room for an extra mattress!"

Polly huffed, crossing her arms. "Fine. But it's only temporary. Anyway, the guests arrived ages ago. We need help in the kitchen."

"Lucy, you’ve had a rough day. Rest," Jo said kindly. "I’ve already set up a mattress for you."

She grabbed a hairband and tied her red hair into a tight bun as she followed Polly out the door.

"Off we go, old gal," Jo teased, linking her arm through Polly’s and dragging her down the hall.

*

The kitchen was pure chaos.

"More wine for the generals!" someone yelled.

Jo groaned and heaved bottles out of the wine cellar, her arms already aching. The so-called royal warriors drank like fish.

As she lifted the last bottle, it slipped from her fingers and shattered across the floor in a spray of glass.

"Jo! Are you okay?" Polly rushed to her side.

"I’m fine," Jo muttered, wincing as she noticed a shallow cut blooming across her palm.

Polly grabbed a cloth and pressed it to the wound, scolding her gently.

"You silly girl."

"Head Miss!" an omega called out. "The former Alpha needs you!"

Polly cursed under her breath.

"Go," Jo said. "I’ll manage."

"Make sure you go outside and stop the bleeding," Polly ordered before disappearing toward the dining hall.

Jo rolled her eyes fondly and slipped out into the garden, grateful for the cold night air.

The sky was breathtaking.

The full moon gleamed like a silver coin, casting everything in soft light.

Jo tilted her head back, letting the breeze wash over her.

"Quite a beauty, isn’t she?" a low voice said.

Jo turned sharply.

A man lounged casually on the grass nearby, clad in heavy silver armor. His face was half-covered by a dark mask, but the smirk visible on his lips made Jo bristle.

"You should be inside, dining with the others," she said coldly.

"The food was terrible," he said, his voice deep and amused.

Jo’s temper flared.

"Oh, lucky for you — plenty of grass out here. Happy grazing, cow."

She spun on her heel to leave, but before she could take another step, his hand shot out and caught her wrist.

She froze.

How had he moved so fast?

"Wait," he said, urgency threading through his voice. "I was only joking."

Jo glared at him, ready to tear into him — but the sight of his eyes stopped her short.

They were golden, with silver rings swirling in them like molten stars.

She had never seen anything like it.

For a heartbeat, neither of them moved.

The tension between them crackled like a live wire.

The stranger's gaze locked onto hers, intense, unyielding.

Jo’s heart thudded painfully in her chest, confused and furious at her own reaction.

"What's your name, miss?" he asked, his voice quieter now, almost reverent.

Jo yanked her hand free, her blood pounding in her ears.

"I need to go," she snapped, pushing past him without another glance.

As she disappeared into the darkness, the man leaned back against the grass, a slow smile curling his lips.

"I’ll find out your name soon enough, little firecracker," he murmured to the night.

Royal guards and generals — always bursting with ego and pride. It was no secret Jo hated them with passion. When she reentered the kitchen, the chaos had only worsened. Polly was darting around, barking orders at the overwhelmed omegas."Polly, you need to slow down," Jo said, trying to soothe her friend. "You’re going to make all the omegas cry with that tone."Polly paused, pressing her fingers against her temples. Now I have to prepare more rooms, assign extra omegas — it’s total chaos. I know you wanted Lucy to rest, but... I really need more hands."Jo sighed. "Alright, fine. But assign Lucy with me, okay? "Caleb, any updates?" Dante mindlinked, already knowing his friend was probably in bed with another she-wolf."Nah, man," Caleb replied casually. "I was busy dealing with a... rather important issue that required my immediate attention."Dante rolled his eyes and sighed heavily. Of course. They were only supposed to stay here one night. But after his encounter with Jolene... everything changed. He had extended the visit for a full week, wasting precious time — and he didn’t even care. Not when he knew his mate was here. Somewhere close. His heart screamed that it was Jolene. But then... why had the other girl carried the same scent too? Was he mistaken? Was something wrong with him?"Just make sure you speak to the witnesses by this evening," Dante ordered sharply, snapping the mindlink shut. This mission was supposed to be straightforward. Instead, he couldn’t get Jolene’s face — her wild, vibrant hair — out of his mind. He needed to see her again. No — he had to.*"What do

She could see it in the way he watched her — sharp, too sharp. She would need to get back to her room later to reinforce the masking of her scent. She also had to strengthen Lucy’s masking... and fast. This was getting riskier by the hour.Nothing — absolutely nothing — was going to come between her and her future. She had been on the run for too long. Sleeping with one eye open. Fighting off the darkness at every turn. And now? Now, she had Lucy to fight for too. Lucy deserved freedom. They both did."Ha-ha," Jo said dryly. "Do all the werewolves from the royal kingdom have such impeccable humor? Because if so, I’ll need to strike the royal kingdom off my travel list."She clapped her hands together before Dante could reply, flashing him with a sarcastic smile."If you’re done with your jokes, shall we make haste to the hunting grounds, Ge-n

As Jo led Dante toward the hunting ground, the noise of the gathering crowd grew louder and louder.Jo’s stomach twisted in disgust.Every year, the Dark Slayer pack held their "traditional hunt" — a brutal bloodsport where captured slaves were hunted down and killed. They weren’t just demons, either. Many were wandering elves, half-fairies, and other magical creatures caught near the no-man’s border. Creatures that didn’t deserve to die.Alpha Jayden took perverse pride in these hunts, flaunting them as some glorious tradition. Jo doubted the royal King and Queen even knew what was happening here. The hunting ground was already filling up. Slaves in shackles — bruised, battered, defeated — were herded like cattle, their eyes hollow.Jo flinched instinctively at the sight but quickly straightened her posture. She couldn’t afford to show weakness here.Above the grounds, a grand tent stood overlooking the field, filled with higher-ranked officials lounging comfortably, sipping win

Jo scanned the bustling field as participants warmed up for the hunt. Commanders, warriors, and pack officials all stretched casually, laughing with their chosen maidens by their sides. They looked relaxed — like this was some festival — while the slaves huddled below, awaiting slaughter.Caleb had chosen Evelyn — Gina’s younger sister. Unlike Gina and her vapid mother, Evelyn was shy, intelligent, and kind. Jo had spoken to her a few times before — and had been impressed. At least one redeemable soul came out of that bloodline.Predictably, Gina was still clinging to Alpha Jayden, practically glued to his side. No surprise there. Gina was desperate to be Luna — she would grovel, cling, and spread her legs if it meant sitting on the Luna throne.Jo huffed under her breath. Meanwhile, Dante’s hand was still firmly locked around hers, like a damn shackle. She glared sideways at the infuriating general. The audacity. Jo stared at the dark-haired general who was watching her far too closely. For some unsettling reason, he didn’t look angry about the trick she pulled on him earlier. He looked... pleased.Dangerously pleased."General, these two slaves are old friends of mine," Jo said carefully, keeping her voice even. "They’re not demons. I’ll be in your debt if you can talk to our Alpha and arrange for their release after the hunt."Dante gave a lazy smirk, playing along. "Old friends, huh? Werewolves too? How did they end up in a hunting ground full of demons?""Umm, yes, General!" Jo said brightly, piling on the pitiful omega act. "They’re low-ranked omegas like myself. We can't shift — too weak — so we got captured easily."Dante studied her.He didn't buy it for a second. Not really. But gods, he wanted to believe her. Jo stormed ahead of the two fairies, who were chattering nonstop behind her.If she had known fairies were such gossip machines, she might have reconsidered making that deal. The faint scent of books and dust still clung to Jo’s clothes as she trailed her fingers across the spines of ancient tomes. The library was pitch black, lit only by a single golden torch hovering above her table. She’d lost track of how long she’d been flipping through records—most written in languages she could only half-decipher. None of them mentioned Malrik. None of them mentioned Hades.A quiet shuffle made her pause. She tensed.Don stood in the doorway, arms folded casually, his voice like velvet wrapped in stone. “Still chasing ghosts?”She shut the book with a soft thud, eyes unreadable. “Some ghosts matter.”He stepped inside. “You’ve been here all afternoon. You should eat.”Jo hesitated, but nodded. “Fine.”Dinner was served in a hushed, candlelit chamber. The table was long, the plates polished, but the food might as well have been ash.He drank slowly, savoring the wine as he leaned back in his chair. “Found anything useful”Jo blinked. “There were some useful informati

Jo wasn’t sure what unnerved her more—the way the air grew colder the closer they got to the Wind Warrior Pack… or the way Alpha Don had been speaking ever since they left. She sat across from him, watching his profile as the forests of the Royal palace blurred past. He hadn’t said much for the past hour, until—“My brother used to love these woods.”Jo glanced up. “You’ve never mentioned a brother.”Don gave a tight-lipped smile. “There’s a lot I don’t mention.”His gaze didn’t shift from the window, but his voice turned heavier, like something long buried was bubbling to the surface.“We were twins. Predicted to follow different paths, one good, one evil.” A cold laugh escaped him. “The Goddess doesn’t like to choose, so she left it up to us. We grew up competing for everything.”Jo frowned. “What happened to him?”Don finally turned to her. His eyes, usually unreadable, were suddenly sharp. Haunted.“I believe he’s still out there. Jo’s cloak fluttered behind her as she moved through the outer gates. The air outside the palace walls felt colder—emptier somehow. The forest beyond was thick with morning mist, and every step toward it felt heavier than the last. A small party of Wind warriors waited near the eastern path, saddled and silent. Alpha Don stood beside them, speaking quietly to one of his men, but when he saw her approach, he straightened.Jo carried no hesitation in her stride. She had already packed. Already said her goodbyes. The weight in her chest from the night before—Theo’s silent understanding, the press of his muzzle against her palm—still sat heavy beneath her ribs. She hadn’t told anyone. Not Sarah, not sweet Evie. This was her decision.Don looked at her as she stopped beside him. “You are coming?”Jo gave a single nod. “I want to come with you. To your pack. To the library. I need to know more about Malrik. About the Goblet. All of it.”He didn’t question it. Just gave her the slightest nod

Jo walked through the eastern corridor, the conversation with Alpha Don still echoing in her mind. His words, his offer—the mention of Malrik. As Jo rounded the corner near the older omegas’ wing, her steps slowed.Low voices filtered through the open archway ahead—maids, maybe three or four of them, their arms full of linens, speaking in hushed but eager tones. They didn’t see her.“…I don’t care if she’s his fated mate,” one of them hissed. “She still acted like the other woman.”Jo froze.“I know!” another whispered. “Kissing the Alpha King like that, right after the courtyard was still burning? Alpha Don was barely breathing! And she’s off playing tragic romance under the moonlight?”“Shhh,” a third warned, but her tone was laced with delight. “Someone might hear.”“Well, someone should say it,” the first one snapped. “Queen Olivia wouldn’t be caught dead behaving like that. She had grace. Power. She didn’t throw herself at him like a siren temptress.”Jo’s spine stiffened.“She i

The dream returned.Same shore. Same call. Her feet drifted forward without thinking, the cool sand pressing between her toes as that sound—faint and familiar—drew her in.
