Chapter 2

Auteur: Sprouting Buds
Marcolo, a reckless playboy from a mafia family noticed I had been left alone and immediately leaned in close. He pressed himself to my side and inhaled deeply.

“You smell good, Miss Lena. See? I told you Victor wouldn’t give you the brooch. I’ve been telling you for a long time to stop clinging to him and please me instead, but you never listened. So, how does it feel now? Embarrassing, isn’t it? Victor told me to keep you company so you wouldn’t get bullied. Come on, have a drink with me.”

I snapped my head toward him, staring at the short, plump man in front of me. Panic rose in my chest. Victor knew exactly what kind of intentions this man had toward me, yet he still sent him over.

My fingers clenched tightly around the fabric of my dress. Whatever remaining hope I had for Victor twisted further into disgust.

Seeing that I refused to even look at him, Marcolo placed his rough, hairy hand on my shoulder.

“Lena, if it weren’t for that pretty face of yours, I would’ve done whatever I wanted with an illegitimate daughter like you. You think Victor can protect you forever?”

Before his hand could move any further, Victor returned and slapped him away.

“Marcolo, didn’t I warn you? Don’t touch my woman.”

Marcolo scoffed. “Haven’t you chosen that little girl over there? What, now you want Lena too?”

“That’s none of your business.”

Marcolo spat on the floor and muttered a curse before walking away.

Victor turned me around sharply so I was facing him.

“He touched you. Why didn’t you move away?”

I felt a chill run down my spine as I rebutted, “Didn’t you allow this to happen?”

His expression darkened. “Listen carefully. On a night like this, I can protect you, but that doesn’t mean I have to stay glued to your side every second.”

“But you know exactly what this lily brooch meant–”

Emily interrupted again, stepping in with a bright, flawless smile. “Victor, I’d like a drink. Is that okay?”

One of us was filled with indignation, while the other was beaming with joy. The answer to who Victor would pick was obvious.

“Of course,” Victor said. “Tonight is your night. You can do whatever you want. Lena, if anything comes up, I’ll see you at your place tomorrow.”

Tomorrow?

I let out a cold, quiet laugh. Tomorrow, he’d only be able to see me in Chicago.

After Victor left to attend to other guests, Emily returned, holding a glass of wine. The timid look on her face was gone. In its place was something more composed, almost like the future lady of the Colonnetti family.

“You already have everything. Do you really need to steal even this little spotlight from me, Lena? It’s my birthday. I only wanted Victor with me for one night. Is that really too much to ask?”

I shook my head. “But I’m not much better than you, am I, Emily?”

My mother died young, so I was taken back into the Moretti family when I was still a child. Madam Moretti looked at me like she wished I had never been brought into the house, but my father, the Don of the Moretti family, had countless lovers. Naturally, he never cared whether the illegitimate daughter he brought home lived or died.

From a young age, I learned how to read people and to survive. Without this face of mine, I wouldn’t have made it this far at all. I survived in the cracks of that family, and eventually, I went to my uncle, begging him to train and protect me.

As they were speaking, the Don of the Corleone family, an elderly man with silver-white hair but a sharp, commanding presence, walked over holding a glass of wine.“Dante, it’s been a long time,” he said in a booming voice. His gaze then shifted to me, carrying a brief moment of appraisal before softening into a polite smile. “And this must be your wife. As expected, she’s a truly beautiful and outstanding lady.”“Don Corleone,” Dante replied with a slight nod, “allow me to introduce my wife, Lena. Lena, this is Don Corleone.”“Don Corleone, it’s an honor,” I said politely. He nodded in approval. “Dante has good taste. Ms. Lena, I’ve heard you’ve been doing quite well with the Moretti family recently. You’re young, capable, and impressive.”I was surprised. I hadn’t expected my movements to have reached his attention.I glanced at Dante, who gave me a calm, reassuring look.“I’ve only done what I was supposed to do. You’re too kind,” I replied modestly.“Ha! Humility is a virtu

At a banquet hosted by the Anthony family, both the Moretti family and the Colonnetti family were present. An underboss from the Moretti family spotted me and remained as arrogant as ever. “Miss, the Don said to bring you over to meet him.”I ignored him and simply swirled the wine glass in my hand. With Dante backing me now, life had become much easier. I no longer had to live with constant exhaustion and dark circles under my eyes. The underboss had been used to barking orders at me. Ever since I was young, he never truly treated me as the Don’s daughter. So, he stepped forward, intending to grab my arm.“So what, you got married, and now you’re acting all proud? Don’t forget who fed you when you were a kid.”“Is that so? I guess I really do see something new every day. A small-time underboss from New York thinks he can lay his hands on my wife in Chicago?”Dante’s voice was sharp. At the same time, his large hand instinctively slid around my waist.“This is the Anthony family

I finally let out a breath of relief. At ten o’clock that night, I returned to the estate. Dante was sitting under the warm glow of the lights, waiting for me. The sight of him softened something in my chest.I walked over before I could stop myself and wrapped my arms around his solid back. Only when I had held him enough did I let go and regain my composure.“Why are you back so late? Are you tired? I made you some spaghetti.”I swallowed the words I had been about to say. He took my hand and led me to the table, watching as I finished the spaghetti he had prepared.“When are you going to try relying on me more? Don’t push yourself so hard.”I looked up at him, the warm light catching his serious expression, and guilt overcame me.“My five-year agreement is up. I should go back to where I originally belonged, don’t I?”Dante didn’t look surprised. It was as if he had already expected I hadn’t truly let go of my plans.“You like the Moretti family?” From what I know, your unc

Dante’s residence was characterized by sharp, clean lines, with sleek and minimalist furniture. Yet, the corners are dotted with colorful soft furnishings that were clearly recent additions. Strangely enough, they didn’t look out of place. Instead, they softened the entire space, making it feel less rigid and intimidating.Once I was seated on the sofa, I handed him a paper.“This is my plan. Please take a look. I’d like to borrow a sum of money from you, and I will repay it in installments.”He took the paper from my hands and skimmed it briefly.“You’re short on money?”To say I wasn’t embarrassed would be a lie. To the Anthony family, the daughter of the Moretti family showing up empty-handed to marry into the Don of the Anthony family’s household was practically an insult. Before boarding the plane, I had done my research. With the Anthony family’s status, they had long become an independent power. They were no longer reliant on alliances, resources, or political marriages. P

I didn’t respond. I simply turned and boarded the plane. A flight attendant quietly placed a set of clean clothes beside me and pointed toward the washroom at the back of the aircraft, lowering her voice.“You can freshen up over there. You might catch a cold if you stay wet.”The interior of the plane was exquisite. It was unmistakably a private jet belonging to the Anthony family. Not only was there a restroom onboard, but there was even a bedroom. Strangely, the bedding was in warm tones and soft to the touch. It didn’t look like something Dante Anthony would normally prefer.Inside the bathroom, I changed into the prepared clothes and was slightly taken aback again. The outfit matched my size perfectly. When I stepped out, the consigliere immediately signaled for the bodyguards in the cabin to move to the rear.“Hi, is this aircraft usually used by Don Dante Anthony?”The consigliere seemed to notice my confusion.“This plane was arranged by the Don. Everything inside was des

“Didn’t Victor have a childhood sweetheart he was supposed to marry? Why is he choosing another woman as his fiancée?”“The other woman is younger.” Then, she changed her tone, a hint of disdain slipping in.“Honestly, it doesn’t make much difference. So what if she’s young? She’s not even as pretty as Victor’s childhood sweetheart.”I let out an awkward cough, causing both of them to turn around at the same time. They didn’t recognize me. Instead, the girl raised her voice, getting bolder as she spoke.“If you ask me, maybe one day Victor will come to his senses and realize I’m better. I’m the jewel of my family, after all.”I had no habit of eavesdropping, so I stood up to pay my bill. As I walked past their table, the girl who had just been laughing so freely finally saw my face. She pointed at me, stunned, unable to speak.“What’s wrong? Do you know her?” the other girl asked until she saw my face. “She’s beautiful.”“Aren’t you…”Her gaze flicked toward the black-clad b
