Chapter 2

Author: Spring Pool
My phone buzzed on and off the entire night.

Lyle sent message after message, lighting up the screen every few minutes before it faded back to black.

I didn't open any of them. Eventually, I put the phone on silent.

At exactly 9:00 am, a knock sounded at the door.

Alyssa walked in with a stylist behind her.

She was already dressed for the wedding. Her gown swept the floor, a veil was pinned neatly into her hair, and the diamond necklace I'd given her rested against her collarbone.

The matching earrings flashed beneath the lights whenever she moved.

She looked at me and said gently, "You should get ready. We're running out of time."

I didn't move from where I was sitting. "I told you. The wedding's off."

Her face tightened as her brows drew together into a frown. "The guests are about to arrive. What are you trying to pull now?"

I looked up at her and sneered.

"I'm not going to stand in front of everyone and pretend none of this happened. And I'm sure as hell not marrying a woman who's been sleeping with my best friend behind my back. Alyssa, does none of this make you ashamed of yourself?"

Her lips parted, but before she could answer, the door burst open.

Lyle rushed into the room wearing a dark blue apron from the early childhood center, with a baby cradled against his chest.

"Gordon, please. Let me explain…"

He strode toward me and grabbed my wrist while the baby wailed in his arms.

"What happened back then was a mistake!"

I pulled my wrist free.

"Save it. Even if what happened four years ago was a mistake, are you going to tell me the baby was one, too? For four years, I treated you like my own brother. The entire time, you were sleeping with the woman I planned to marry."

Lyle's lips parted, but he was speechless.

"Gordon, I…"

I looked down, my gaze locking onto the apron he was wearing. "Hillridge Early Childhood Education Centre" was embroidered across the chest.

Suddenly, everything made sense.

I laughed under my breath and turned to Alyssa. "So that's why you always had business trips to Hillridge. That's why you wouldn't answer your phone or text me back. You weren't working. You were going to see him and your child.

"And the whole time, I was sitting at home worrying about whether your flight landed safely. I couldn't even sleep until I got a message saying you'd arrived."

Alyssa lowered her eyes and pressed her lips together.

Meanwhile, Lyle's voice was hoarse when he said, "Gordon, I'm sorry. I never wanted to lie to you…"

Alyssa immediately crossed the room and steadied him.

Then, she took the baby from his arms with practiced ease and gently patted the child's back until the crying began to settle.

The train of her wedding gown dragged carelessly across the floor, but she didn't even notice.

"Lyle, you've been taking care of the baby all day. Go sit down for a while."

She guided him toward the couch with one hand while securely supporting the baby with the other.

That was when I noticed the watch on his wrist.

It was a Patek Philippe worth three times more than the one Alyssa had given me.

The face gleamed beneath the lights, and suddenly I understood why Lyle had always seemed unimpressed by mine.

"I gave up on my own career for you. For eight years, I put everything I had into helping you build yours," I said.

I didn't even know what hurt more. Was it the betrayal itself or the realization of how little she'd valued everything I'd done?

"I was there when we lived in a rental apartment with water leaking through the ceiling. I was there when we were so broke we could barely afford instant noodles. And I was there when you finally reached the point where you were earning a million dollars a year.

"Yet the watch you gave me isn't even worth a third of the one you bought him. Is that really all I ever meant to you?"

Alyssa shot to her feet, her expression dark.

"That's enough! He's been looking after the baby all day. His hands are already shaking, so stop laying into him."

"Fine. I'm done."

I turned, picked up my phone from the nightstand, and headed for the door.

I'd barely taken a few steps when I almost ran straight into Alyssa's mother.

Melissa Peters was dressed in a burgundy gown for the wedding, clearly on her way to greet the arriving guests.

The smile disappeared from her face as soon as she saw me.

"Gordon, do you have any idea what time it is? You're not even dressed yet. Where do you think you're going?"

"Home," I said. "The wedding's canceled."

She froze. "What did you just say?"

"I said there isn't going to be a wedding. I'm not marrying Alyssa."

Melissa's face flushed with anger. "Gordon Tate, are you seriously going to humiliate our entire family like—"

She stopped abruptly.

Her gaze had shifted over my shoulder and into the room.

Lyle was sitting there with the baby.

Melissa stared at him for a second, and then her expression shifted.

"Lyle, why did you bring my grandson all the way out here? He's still a baby. What if he gets sick?"

I froze, stunned.

When her words finally sank in, the absurdity of the situation almost made me laugh.

It seemed that everyone knew about them except me.

With that, I turned and left.Alyssa stayed rooted to her spot for a long time. She was still there when daylight faded, and the streetlights came on. Even after the crowds had disappeared and the street had emptied, she remained behind alone.Later, I heard that she'd spent another entire night sitting outside my inn.She left the next morning. Before going, she paid for my room and covered another three months in advance. She also left a message with the front desk."If he decides he doesn't want to stay here anymore, he can leave whenever he wants. Don't bother telling me."After that, Alyssa never came back.I eventually moved out of the inn and found somewhere quieter to live.Nobody there knew me, and nobody knew anything about my past. The days passed slowly after that, peaceful and uneventful.I went running every morning and spent my evenings watching the sun set over Lake Deloria.Eventually, I adopted a dog and named him Peanut.I was perfectly capable of build

  • Anonymous Truths Ruined My Perfect Wedding   Chapter 10

Alyssa stayed in Deloria for two weeks.During that time, she tried everything she could think of to apologize. She got me flowers, bought me gifts, offered her apologies, and begged on her knees. But none of it made a difference.By the seventh day, she finally seemed to reach her breaking point. That morning, I came downstairs as usual, planning to walk along Lake Deloria.Alyssa had been waiting outside. The second she saw me, she sprang to her feet so quickly that her legs buckled beneath her.She dropped to her knees directly in front of me.I halted in my tracks and looked down at her."Gordon…"Her voice shook as badly as the rest of her body. "Tell me what I have to do to make you forgive me. I don't care how difficult it is. Whatever you ask, I'll do it. If you want me dead, I'll do that, too."I looked into her eyes without answering. Then, without warning, Alyssa raised her hand and slapped herself hard across the face."That one's for you. I never should've slep

Alyssa didn't leave Deloria.Instead, she found somewhere nearby to stay, and every morning at 7:00 am, she waited outside my inn until I came downstairs. Some days, I wandered through the town with no particular destination in mind. Other days, I went down to Lake Deloria and sat by the water dazedly.Alyssa followed wherever I went, always keeping a careful distance between us. She didn't dare come too close, but she refused to fall far enough behind to lose sight of me.On the third day, she left an enormous bouquet of sunflowers at the front desk of my inn, along with a handwritten note."You once told me that guys like getting flowers, too."I saw them when I passed through the lobby, but I didn't take them with me.The next day, she somehow found out which bakery in town sold my favorite croissants. She waited in line for two hours, bought an entire box, and left it on the steps outside my inn. When I came back, I stepped around it and went inside.By the fifth day, rain

Alyssa arrived in Deloria the following evening.Using her coworker's photo as a reference, she followed the narrow street until she found the textile shop in the background. She stopped outside, slightly breathless, and looked through the doorway. The shop was empty.Alyssa went inside and approached the woman behind the counter."Excuse me, did a man come in here recently? He would've been wearing a gray hiking jacket. Short hair, about this tall…"She raised a hand to show my approximate height. The woman thought for a moment before nodding. "Yes, he was here yesterday. He bought some fabric because he wanted to make a bed for his dog.""Do you know where he's staying?" Alyssa asked. The woman shook her head."Sorry, I don't. But he doesn't seem like someone who's just here for the weekend. He's stopped by several times already."Alyssa thanked her and stepped back outside.Once she was standing in the middle of the street again, she realized she had no idea where to go

Alyssa started searching everywhere she thought I might have gone. She began with the cafe where we'd first met, tucked away on a quiet side street near our old college campus. The place looked almost the same as she remembered. Trailing plants still spilled over the windowsills, and a little wind chime hung above the front door. When Alyssa stepped inside, she found the same cheerful woman still running the place. The woman stared at her for a moment before recognition crossed her face."Alyssa? I haven't seen you in years."Alyssa smiled. "Have you seen Gordon lately?"The woman thought about it, then shook her head. "No, I haven't seen him in a long time."Alyssa thanked her and left. From there, she went to the movie theater where we'd had our first date, only to remember that the old building had been torn down years ago. A mall now stood in its place. She lingered outside the entrance, watching people come and go, searching every passing figure for me but to no avail.H

A week passed. As the days went by, Alyssa gradually began to realize that something was off.An entire week had gone by without a single text or phone call from me. I hadn't posted anything on social media, either. It was as though I'd vanished completely.Eventually, she couldn't sit around and wait any longer. She left work early and drove to my office. After parking along the curb, she leaned against the side of her car with a cigarette between her fingers, never taking her eyes off the lobby doors. At 5:30 pm, employees began filing out in small groups.Half an hour later, dusk had settled over the city.At 7:00 pm, most of the office lights had gone dark.I still hadn't appeared.Alyssa went inside. At the front desk, she said, "Hi. I'm looking for Gordon Tate."The receptionist glanced up at her, and something was unsettling about her expression. "Mr. Tate has already resigned."For a moment, Alyssa couldn't process what she'd heard. "He resigned? When?""Last Tuesd
