Chapter 3

Author: Spring Pool
Melissa shoved past me and rushed into the room.

She immediately went to Lyle's side, steadying him with one hand while reaching for the baby's face with the other, her expression filled with concern.

"Lyle, why would you bring the baby out here? He's still so young. What if he gets sick?"

Lyle looked at me but said nothing.

Melissa followed his gaze, and the concern on her face vanished in an instant.

"Gordon, did you make him come here? You know how young that baby is. Why would you put him through all this?"

I laughed from sheer disbelief.

"Do you even realize that I'm the man your daughter is supposed to marry today? She had a baby with another man behind my back. Everyone knew about it, and somehow, nobody thought I deserved to know!"

Melissa gave me a cold laugh, completely unfazed by my anger.

"You're the one who pursued Alyssa for years and begged her to marry you. Our family never wanted this marriage in the first place.

"You don't come from money, you have no family connections, and you have nothing that puts you on Alyssa's level. What exactly makes you think you're good enough for her?

"I told Alyssa a long time ago that she should marry someone who actually belonged in her world, but she wouldn't listen. She let you hang on to her for years, and now look where that's gotten her."

I'd heard enough.

My fists tightened as I said bitterly, "Maybe I'm not good enough for your daughter, but at least I know how to keep my clothes on around someone else's partner. She cheated on me and had another man's baby. Is that how you raise—"

The slap came before I could finish speaking.

My head snapped to the side, and a sting spread across my cheek.

"Mom!"

Alyssa hurried toward us. "Stay out of this!"

Melissa jabbed a finger at me, her face flushed with anger. "Who do you think you are, talking to me in that tone?

"Let me tell you something, Gordon. If you hadn't spent the last eight years clinging to Alyssa and refusing to let her go, she wouldn't have wasted all this time carrying you along!"

I slowly turned back toward her, tasting blood where the inside of my lip had split.

Melissa sneered at the sight of me, almost as if she enjoyed seeing me humiliated.

"Lyle is a hundred times the man you are. He's hardworking, dependable, and he never forgets me on birthdays or holidays.

"I've wanted him as my son-in-law for years. He'd be an asset to this family. You, on the other hand, have brought Alyssa nothing but bad luck."

"Mrs. James, that's enough!"

Lyle rushed over and stopped in front of me.

His gaze landed on the blood at the corner of my mouth. His throat tightened visibly, and his hands curled into fists before slowly relaxing again.

"Gordon…"

His voice came out hoarse.

I didn't answer him.

Instead, I suddenly remembered something from years ago.

Back then, I'd gone to Lyle with red-rimmed eyes and told him how much Alyssa's family looked down on me. He'd gotten so angry on my behalf that he'd punched the couch.

"They're idiots if they can't see what a great guy you are! Even if you never marry Alyssa, there'd still be women lining up to be with you. She's the one who should be grateful you chose her!" Lyle had said.

The memory faded, and I stared at him, pulling the corners of my aching lips into a bitter smile.

"Are you happy now, Lyle?"

He shook his head frantically. "No, Gordon. I swear, I never wanted…"

I didn't bother listening to the rest. I turned and headed for the door.

"Gordon!"

Alyssa called after me, but I didn't bother turning around.

"Gordon, would you just listen to me?"

She hurried after me and grabbed my arm, forcing me to stop.

"You've known my mom for years. You know how she is. She says harsh things when she's angry, but she doesn't actually mean them. Can we please deal with all of this after the wedding? We have guests waiting downstairs. Don't ruin the day for everyone."

I shook her hand off and looked at her coldly.

"Alyssa, we've been together for eight years. In all that time, did you ever defend me once?"

She went quiet.

"If you'd stood up for me once, I could've convinced myself those eight years meant something. But you never did. Not once."

My voice had gone hoarse by the end.

Then, I turned away and walked out without a backward glance.

With that, I turned and left.Alyssa stayed rooted to her spot for a long time. She was still there when daylight faded, and the streetlights came on. Even after the crowds had disappeared and the street had emptied, she remained behind alone.Later, I heard that she'd spent another entire night sitting outside my inn.She left the next morning. Before going, she paid for my room and covered another three months in advance. She also left a message with the front desk."If he decides he doesn't want to stay here anymore, he can leave whenever he wants. Don't bother telling me."After that, Alyssa never came back.I eventually moved out of the inn and found somewhere quieter to live.Nobody there knew me, and nobody knew anything about my past. The days passed slowly after that, peaceful and uneventful.I went running every morning and spent my evenings watching the sun set over Lake Deloria.Eventually, I adopted a dog and named him Peanut.I was perfectly capable of build

  • Anonymous Truths Ruined My Perfect Wedding   Chapter 10

Alyssa stayed in Deloria for two weeks.During that time, she tried everything she could think of to apologize. She got me flowers, bought me gifts, offered her apologies, and begged on her knees. But none of it made a difference.By the seventh day, she finally seemed to reach her breaking point. That morning, I came downstairs as usual, planning to walk along Lake Deloria.Alyssa had been waiting outside. The second she saw me, she sprang to her feet so quickly that her legs buckled beneath her.She dropped to her knees directly in front of me.I halted in my tracks and looked down at her."Gordon…"Her voice shook as badly as the rest of her body. "Tell me what I have to do to make you forgive me. I don't care how difficult it is. Whatever you ask, I'll do it. If you want me dead, I'll do that, too."I looked into her eyes without answering. Then, without warning, Alyssa raised her hand and slapped herself hard across the face."That one's for you. I never should've slep

Alyssa didn't leave Deloria.Instead, she found somewhere nearby to stay, and every morning at 7:00 am, she waited outside my inn until I came downstairs. Some days, I wandered through the town with no particular destination in mind. Other days, I went down to Lake Deloria and sat by the water dazedly.Alyssa followed wherever I went, always keeping a careful distance between us. She didn't dare come too close, but she refused to fall far enough behind to lose sight of me.On the third day, she left an enormous bouquet of sunflowers at the front desk of my inn, along with a handwritten note."You once told me that guys like getting flowers, too."I saw them when I passed through the lobby, but I didn't take them with me.The next day, she somehow found out which bakery in town sold my favorite croissants. She waited in line for two hours, bought an entire box, and left it on the steps outside my inn. When I came back, I stepped around it and went inside.By the fifth day, rain

Alyssa arrived in Deloria the following evening.Using her coworker's photo as a reference, she followed the narrow street until she found the textile shop in the background. She stopped outside, slightly breathless, and looked through the doorway. The shop was empty.Alyssa went inside and approached the woman behind the counter."Excuse me, did a man come in here recently? He would've been wearing a gray hiking jacket. Short hair, about this tall…"She raised a hand to show my approximate height. The woman thought for a moment before nodding. "Yes, he was here yesterday. He bought some fabric because he wanted to make a bed for his dog.""Do you know where he's staying?" Alyssa asked. The woman shook her head."Sorry, I don't. But he doesn't seem like someone who's just here for the weekend. He's stopped by several times already."Alyssa thanked her and stepped back outside.Once she was standing in the middle of the street again, she realized she had no idea where to go

Alyssa started searching everywhere she thought I might have gone. She began with the cafe where we'd first met, tucked away on a quiet side street near our old college campus. The place looked almost the same as she remembered. Trailing plants still spilled over the windowsills, and a little wind chime hung above the front door. When Alyssa stepped inside, she found the same cheerful woman still running the place. The woman stared at her for a moment before recognition crossed her face."Alyssa? I haven't seen you in years."Alyssa smiled. "Have you seen Gordon lately?"The woman thought about it, then shook her head. "No, I haven't seen him in a long time."Alyssa thanked her and left. From there, she went to the movie theater where we'd had our first date, only to remember that the old building had been torn down years ago. A mall now stood in its place. She lingered outside the entrance, watching people come and go, searching every passing figure for me but to no avail.H

  • Anonymous Truths Ruined My Perfect Wedding   Chapter 6

A week passed. As the days went by, Alyssa gradually began to realize that something was off.An entire week had gone by without a single text or phone call from me. I hadn't posted anything on social media, either. It was as though I'd vanished completely.Eventually, she couldn't sit around and wait any longer. She left work early and drove to my office. After parking along the curb, she leaned against the side of her car with a cigarette between her fingers, never taking her eyes off the lobby doors. At 5:30 pm, employees began filing out in small groups.Half an hour later, dusk had settled over the city.At 7:00 pm, most of the office lights had gone dark.I still hadn't appeared.Alyssa went inside. At the front desk, she said, "Hi. I'm looking for Gordon Tate."The receptionist glanced up at her, and something was unsettling about her expression. "Mr. Tate has already resigned."For a moment, Alyssa couldn't process what she'd heard. "He resigned? When?""Last Tuesd
