Chapter 6: Neutralizing the Intruder

The crimson alert on Astrid's wrist vibrated incessantly. On the mini digital display, a red blip flashed rapidly in Sector Seven—the drainage junction and underground emergency conduit along the villa’s rear slope.

Violet lightning tore across the pitch-black sky of Oakhaven, silhouetting Astrid where she stood on the upper terrace. Far below the ridge, the muffled roar of floodwaters swallowing the coastal districts still rumbled like a beast, but she refused to let her focus waver for a single heartbeat. In the apocalypse, letting your guard down for one second was an open invitation to an early grave.

Moving in utter silence, Astrid slipped into the staging room. She zipped up her waterproof tactical jacket, tugged on reinforced slash-resistant gloves, and pulled a matte-black suppressed pistol and a serrated combat knife from the weapon rack.

"Nora, seal the lower bulkheads," Astrid’s voice came smooth and level over the tactical earpiece. "Stay in the control hub and keep your eyes glued to the monitors. Do not open that door no matter what you hear."

"Astrid, be careful! The seismic sensors just flagged high-yield explosives on him!" Nora’s anxious voice crackled through the comms.

"He won't live long enough to detonate them," Astrid replied coldly.

She slipped out through a reinforced steel side hatch concealed within the rocky crag's shadow. A torrential downpour hammered the earth as if the heavens had ruptured, drumming against the pine needles with a deafening racket. But the howling storm and rushing water were Astrid’s best allies—nature’s own noise suppressor masking her footsteps.

Her movements were fluid, devoid of hesitation. Muscle memory forged through years of desperate, bloody survival in her past life took over; Astrid glided through the dense hillside pines like a ghost.

In under two minutes, she reached the rocky outcrop overlooking the rear gate.

Looking through her night-vision optics, Astrid spotted a lean, wiry figure clad in a drenched black wetsuit and a full face mask. The high-voltage razor wire along the outer perimeter had been cleanly snipped with insulated heavy-duty cutters—a surgical breach that screamed seasoned operator, not amateur scavenger.

The man knelt before the steel access hatch that led into the villa’s drainage lines. In his hands, a greenish-gray block of explosives was already planted against the heavy hinges, wired to a digital detonator with thin copper leads. His rubber-gloved thumb hovered over the trigger switch.

Astrid didn't waste her breath on empty warnings.

Raising the sidearm with a rock-steady two-handed grip, she dialed in her target in dead silence.

Pfft! Pfft!

Two muffled cracks barely registered over the thunder rolling across the ridge.

The first round drilled through the infiltrator’s right wrist, shattering bone and sending the detonator flying into the wet dirt. The second slug bored straight into his left kneecap, tearing the joint apart until his leg buckled at a sickening angle.

"Aaargh!"

A choked shriek tore from beneath the mask as the man collapsed into the mud, clutching his mangled, bloodied knee.

Before he could reach for the combat blade at his hip with his left hand, a shadow descended from the rocks above.

SLAM!

Astrid’s steel-toed combat boot drove into his sternum with crushing force, pinning his ribs against the stony ground. The distinct crack of fracturing bone echoed beneath her heel. In the same breath, the suppressed muzzle—still venting faint wisps of cordite smoke—pressed firmly between the infiltrator’s eyes.

The masked man’s eyes widened in wild panic. His breath came in ragged wheezes as he stared up into Astrid’s dark, fathomless brown eyes—eyes that held not a trace of human mercy.

"Who sent you?" Astrid asked. Her voice was flat and deadly calm, a stark contrast to the shrieking tempest around them.

The man coughed, spitting up flecks of blood as he stalled. "I... I'm just a starving scavenger... spare me, lady—"

CRUNCH!

Without a second's hesitation, Astrid ground the heavy steel slide of her sidearm into his shattered right fingers, pulverizing two of them against the bedrock.

"Ahhh! Dammit!" the man howled in pure agony, his body convulsing violently against the ground.

"I don't like repeating myself," Astrid whispered coldly, her finger taking up the slack on the trigger. "Lie to me again, and the next round goes through your right eye."

A thick, suffocating aura of killing intent rolled off her. The infiltrator realized with sickening clarity that the woman pinning him down wasn't bluffing. This was no sheltered heiress frightened by a little blood; this was a seasoned, remorseless executioner.

"Mercy! I'll talk!" the man wheezed frantically, blood dribbling through the fabric over his mouth. "I'm a freelance mercenary... somebody paid me fifty thousand gold coins before the city went under. My only job was to blow this intake line so the bunker doors would unseal from the inside!"

"Who ordered the breach?" Astrid pressed, her eyes narrowing to slits.

"I don't know the real name! Everything was handled over pirate radio frequencies... they just said the owner of this villa has the biggest food cache on the mountain and needed to be wiped out before their faction gets here—"

Snap.

A faint sound—a dry twig snapping behind the dense pine thicket at Astrid's back.

Her survival instincts flared instantly. Without looking back, Astrid rolled smoothly to the side, clearing the line of fire and snapping her pistol toward the tree line in a heartbeat.

"Don't shoot. It's me."

A deep, authoritative voice cut through the darkness.

Declan Mercer stepped out from the shadow of the pines. He was geared in full black tactical battle dress, complete with a heavy ballistic plate carrier, an assault rifle resting casually across his chest. His predatory hawk eyes swept over the bloodied wreck beneath Astrid's boot, then shifted to her face, a glint of genuine intrigue flickering behind his gaze.

"Hell of a set of reflexes, Miss Pierce," Declan murmured as he closed the distance. His boots made almost no sound against the sodden earth. "Heard the suppressed pops from my watchtower. Figured you might need a hand, but looks like your target is already neutralized."

"I don't need a hand putting down gutter rats," Astrid replied coldly, her weapon never wavering from Declan's center mass until she confirmed his posture remained neutral.

Declan’s lips twitched into a faint smirk—a rare expression on the former black-ops commander’s stone-carved face. He wasn't offended by the gun pointed at his chest. On the contrary, Astrid’s razor-sharp vigilance only confirmed that she was the deadliest, most competent ally he could have asked for.

Declan crouched beside the dying infiltrator, grabbed the collar of his suit, and ripped the mask away. Rummaging through the man's vest pockets, he scooped up the block of explosives and the detonator half-buried in the mud.

Declan’s calloused thumb wiped away the grime from the detonator casing. The casual ease on his face vanished, replaced by an icy, razor-sharp focus.

"This isn't some scrap-iron pirate rig," Declan said, his gravelly voice dropping low as he aimed a pocket tactical light at the back of the casing.

Astrid stepped closer, her gaze tracking the small piece of metal in his hands. "Meaning?"

Declan turned the detonator over, revealing a laser-etched serial code and the clean silhouette of a fanged eagle stamped into the matte-black titanium.

"Military-grade C4 demolition kit, stamped with armory serials from the Northern Military District," Declan whispered, looking up at Astrid with grave intensity. "These aren't just desperate scavengers flushed out by the flood, Astrid. An organized military faction from outside the city marked this summit long before the storm hit... and they're heading our way with heavy armor."

Camilla’s ragged gasps and hysterical sobbing over the speakerphone didn't elicit even a flicker of emotion from Astrid."Astrid, listen to me!" Camilla shrieked, her frantic voice bouncing off the high ceilings of the living room. "Viktor is a stone-cold killer! Julian’s lost his damn mind over these debts. You have to hand over the money, Astrid! If you don't, they’ll come after me next... they know my penthouse was bought in Julian's name!"A chilling smirk touched Astrid’s lips.In their previous life, Camilla had always played the innocent, helpless doe while whispering poison into Julian’s ear to destroy her. Now, she wasn't calling out of genuine concern for Astrid’s safety; she was terrified of losing her pampered lifestyle and ending up on a mobster's hit list. Camilla just wanted Astrid to play the sacrificial lamb once again—to act as the financial shield cleaning up Julian’s mess, just like she always had."Good," Astrid said, her tone so flat it cut right through Camilla'

The muzzle of the matte-black tactical sidearm tapped against the glass in a slow, rhythmic beat. Metal striking reinforced glass rang out with unmistakable, lethal intent along the deserted mountain road.Yet Astrid Pierce didn't flinch. Her hands rested on the steering wheel, not trembling by a fraction of a millimeter. In her past life, the name Declan Mercer was a living legend among elite mercenary outfits and black-ops circles. He was ruthless, calculating, cold-blooded to the core, and possessed the most savage survival instincts when human civilization collapsed beneath the deluge. Knowing exactly what kind of monster stood outside her car actually made Astrid feel far calmer than dealing with an irrational fool.Instead of panicking, throwing her hands up, or pleading for mercy, Astrid tapped the control on the door panel.Whirrr.The heavy window slid down smoothly—just a couple of inches. Julian’s hand halted inches from Astrid’s face. It wasn't out of mercy, but because a burst of mocking laughter suddenly tore from his throat."A divorce?" Julian lowered his hand and scoffed, as if he had just heard the most pathetic joke of the century. "You want to divorce me, Astrid? Don't be ridiculous. You think you can bluff me just because you threw a tantrum over seeing Camilla last night?"Eleanor brushed the shredded paper off her brocade gown, sneering with deep disgust etched into her wrinkled face."Ungrateful, barren wretch!" Eleanor shrilled, thrusting a trembling finger at Astrid’s nose. "The Sterling family took you in for two years! We gave you the honor of being a director's wife! If Julian hadn't been charitable enough to marry you, you’d be nothing more than a lonely orphan rotting away with your grandfather’s inheritance. And now you dare threaten us?"Julian folded his arms over his chest, his arrogant smirk returning. "Drop the cheap drama, Astrid. Apologize t

Her lips had turned a ghastly blue, her fingers were completely numb, and each breath rattled painfully in her throat.
