Brown

The heavy steel blast doors of Mount Ironwood hissed shut behind us with a loud, mechanical thud. The thick deadbolts slammed into place, sealing out the growing chaos of the outside world. The sudden silence inside the bunker was almost deafening, broken only by the steady hum of the industrial diesel generator.

I killed the engine of the Ford pickup, stepped out of the driver’s side, and walked around to open the passenger door for Rex.

"Come on down, boy," I said gently.

Rex hopped down onto the cool concrete floor, his nose twitching as he sniffed the air of the underground bay. He looked around the massive, fortified space, his dark eyes taking in the reinforced steel walls, the glowing thermal surveillance monitors, and the neatly stacked crates of supplies.

I knelt down, resting a hand on his broad head. "This will be our new home from now on, Rex. Safe, secure, and built to survive whatever is coming."

Rex let out a soft, low bark of approval, nuzzling his heavy snout into my palm.

"I know it’s been a crazy day, and I haven't even fed you properly," I murmured, standing back up and walking over to the designated pet supply station. I scooped out a generous bowl of high-protein dog food and placed it on the floor beside a fresh bowl of purified water. "Eat up and get some rest. I have a feeling there's going to be a whole lot of work for us to do."

Rex didn't need to be told twice. He dug into the bowl enthusiastically, his tail giving a few satisfied thumps against the floor.

Before I could even take a breath, a sharp, clear tone echoed directly inside my mind.

[CONGRATULATIONS ON REACHING THE MOUNT IRONWOOD FORTRESS.]

[DAY ZERO IS OFFICIALLY ACTIVE. SYSTEM FULL UNLOCK INITIALIZED.]

[SYSTEM VISUAL INTERFACE OFFICIALLY UNLOCKED AND ACTIVATED.]

[NEW FEATURES UNLOCKED: DIMENSIONAL STORAGE (DUAL-CHAMBER) & ANTIDOTE SYNTHESIS CORE.]

I froze as a glowing, semi-transparent deep-blue visual interface materialized right before my eyes—floating cleanly in my line of sight, crisp and interactive.

"Antidote? Dual storage?" I asked aloud, rubbing my forehead as I stared at the new visual display floating in front of me. "What is the antidote about, and how exactly do I use these storage spaces?"

The System responded instantly, its voice echoing in my head while bold text rolled across the visual interface:

[EXPLANATION: YOUR DIMENSIONAL STORAGE IS DIVIDED INTO TWO DISTINCT CHAMBERS.]

[CHAMBER 1 (PRIMARY): DESIGNED EXCLUSIVELY FOR PRE-FILLED MEDICAL SYRINGES CONTAINING YOUR BLOOD.]

[CHAMBER 2 (CONTAINMENT): DESIGNED FOR STORING AND CONTAINING RECOVERING ZOMBIES DURING ANTIDOTE TRANSFORMATION.]

I blinked, completely stunned by the text hovering on the screen. "My blood? The syringes are for my blood?!"

[CORRECT. YOUR BLOOD CONTAINS THE UNIQUE GENETIC STRAIN CAPABLE OF COMPLETELY ENDING THE APOCALYPSE. TO ADMINISTER THE CURE, YOU MUST DRAW YOUR BLOOD INTO AN INDUSTRIAL SYRINGE AND INJECT AN INFECTED TARGET.]

[ONCE INJECTED, THE RECOVERING ZOMBIE MUST BE STORED IN CHAMBER 2 UNTIL FULL MUTATION REVERSAL IS COMPLETE.]

I stared at the floating interface, my brain struggling to process the absolute insanity of what I was reading. My blood... the key to ending the entire apocalypse?! I had spent days hoarding weapons, buying bulk ammo, and preparing to blast infected monsters into dust. Now, the System was telling me I held the ultimate cure in my veins—and I was built to heal them.

"Wait a second," I demanded, narrowing my eyes at the screen. "What if I'm backed into a corner? Am I allowed to kill them at all?"

The System's mechanical voice softened slightly, clarifying the rule on the blue screen:

[CLARIFICATION: YOU ARE PERMITTED TO KILL ONLY WHEN THERE IS NO OTHER OPTION—SUCH AS WHEN A TARGET IS BEYOND SAVING OR THREATENS IMMEDIATE FATAL HARM.]

[WARNING: IF AN INFECTED ZOMBIE CAN STILL BE SAVED AND YOU CHOOSE TO KILL THEM INSTEAD OF ADMINISTERING THE CURE, A SEVERE PENALTY WILL BE APPLIED.]

[PENALTY: YOUR DIMENSIONAL STORAGE WILL SHRINK BY 20%, AND YOUR COMBAT SPEED/AGILITY WILL BE TEMPORARILY REDUCED BY 50%, MAKING YOUR BODY FEEL SIGNIFICANTLY HEAVIER AND SLUGGISHER.]

[ADDITIONAL NOTE: YOUR CANINE COMPANION HAS BEEN REGISTERED AS A CERTIFIED SYSTEM ALLY. REX CAN BE DEPLOYED TO RESTRAIN TARGETS DURING BLOOD INJECTION.]

"So I can kill if it's life-or-death... but if they're saveable and I put a bullet in their head, I get punished," I muttered, shaking my head in disbelief. "Why is this so damn cruel?! Why the hell would I risk my neck to save monsters that are trying to tear my flesh off?! I prepared to survive a war, not run a free post-apocalyptic hospital!"

I slumped into a steel chair, processing the weight of the rules on the screen. If I killed a zombie that could be saved, the System would penalize my body, making my heavy-set frame feel even heavier and slower. I wouldn't just be fighting the apocalypse; I'd be fighting my own sluggish body if I broke the System's directives.

Then a dark, unsettling thought crept into my mind.

If my blood is supposed to end this apocalypse, does that mean I'm supposed to save Mavel too if he turns into one of those things?

I scoffed bitterly. The thought of stabbing a syringe of my own blood into Mavel’s neck after everything he did to me made my stomach turn. But if leaving him dead when he could be cured meant getting penalized by the System... I was stuck in a twisted game where revenge and salvation were disgustingly intertwined.

"So my main job isn't even to hunt and kill..." I whispered to myself, watching the blue interface ripple in front of me. "It's to go out there, fight them off, and force a cure down their throats whenever they can still be saved."

I stood up, walked over to one of the crates, and uncapped a clean industrial syringe. I had never done anything like this before. My hands trembled slightly as I tied a rubber tourniquet around my forearm, watching the thick vein pop up against my skin.

I positioned the thick gauge needle over the vein and pressed down.

Agh!

A sharp, violent sting shot straight up my arm, making me gasp aloud. Tears instantly pricked the corners of my eyes as the cold steel bit deep into my flesh. It wasn't like a gentle flu shot at a clinic—these heavy-duty industrial syringes were brutal, and doing it to myself for the very first time felt like plunging a nail into my arm. I gritted my teeth, squeezing my eyes shut until the burning pain settled into a dull, throbbing ache.

Slowly, I pulled back on the plunger, watching my own dark, warm blood fill the clear barrel.

Holding the blood-filled syringe in my shaking, sore hand, I focused my mind on Chamber 1 of my new dimensional storage. Instantly, the syringe dissolved into a faint glimmer of blue light and vanished from my fingers.

A second later, I willed it back. Retrieve.

In a flash of light, the syringe rematerialized firmly in my right hand.

[SUCCESS: 1X BLOOD-FILLED SYRINGE STORED IN CHAMBER 1.]

[WARNING: BLOOD REGENERATION IS TIED TO CURE COMPLETION. ANY BLOOD DRAWN FROM YOUR BODY WILL NOT REGENERATE UNTIL AN INFECTED SUBJECT HAS BEEN SUCCESSFULLY INJECTED AND STORED IN CHAMBER 2. USE YOUR BLOOD CAREFULLY TO AVOID CRITICAL FATIGUE.]

I stared at the syringe in my hand, feeling a sudden wave of lightheadedness and a sharp throb in my punctured arm. I couldn't just drain myself dry preparing syringes ahead of time—I had to actively cure zombies to get my own blood and stamina back.

Suddenly, a loud, piercing alarm chimed from the main command console.

The security monitors flashed red. I stood up immediately, stepping over to the screen matrix. The 360-degree thermal perimeter feed showed a single human-shaped figure stumbling up the winding gravel road of Mount Ironwood.

Its movements were jerky, unnatural, and violent. Its head twitched sideways, and dark, infected blood dripped from its jaw onto its torn shirt.

The unlocked visual interface flashed brightly across my vision:

[FIRST MANDATORY MISSION UNLOCKED!]

[TARGET DETECTED AT BUNKER PERIMETER: 1X EARLY-STAGE INFECTED.]

[OBJECTIVE: DEPLOY YOUR ALLY (REX), ADMINISTER BLOOD SYRINGE, AND STORE YOUR FIRST RECOVERING ZOMBIE.]

[TIME TO INTERCEPTION: 3 MINUTES.]

I looked down at Rex, who had already stopped eating and was standing by my side, a low, fierce growl rumbling in his chest.

I loaded the blood-filled syringe back into Chamber 1 of my dimensional storage and gripped my tactical gear tightly.

"Looks like our rest is over, boy," I whispered, rubbing my sore arm one last time. "Time to go to work."

~Brown~I turned off my heavy truck's engine, unlatched the door, and stepped down into the light red drizzle. My boots sank into the damp gravel, and my right hand rested heavily on the holstered gun at my hip. Before I could even take two steps toward the bunker's security panel, a rustle echoed from the tree line. Two soaking-wet figures came scrambling out from behind a jagged rock near my perimeter fence. They were caked in red mud, their clothes torn, breathing so hard their chests heaved in the cool air.It was Mavel and Ginger. They had clearly been lurking in the shadows, shivering in the drizzle while waiting for my truck to show up."Brown! Oh my god, Brown, we finally found you!" Mavel shouted, staggering toward me with a desperate, frantic look on his face. "We’ve been waiting out here in the cold for hours! Please, you have to let us in! Look at what's happening out there—people in the city are tearing each other apart and eating human flesh! If you leave us out here in

~ Brown~I sank into a deep, heavy sleep the moment my head hit the mattress. The frantic packing, the endless driving, and the brutal fight in the red drizzle had drained every single drop of energy from my body. When I finally opened my eyes, the bunker room was quiet except for the hum of the generator. My muscles still felt sore. I looked down at the floor beside the wooden bed where I had been sleeping and noticed heavy dirt marks and red mud tracks dried on the concrete floor from my tactical boots. The moment I sat up, Rex lifted his big head from his paws and woke up right away, his ears perking up to watch me."Good boy, Rex," I muttered softly, rubbing my tired eyes.I stood up and walked into the bathroom to take a quick, hot shower and wash off the grime. Standing in front of the mirror, I reached out to unclip my shirt collar, and my hand automatically went to my collarbone. My fingers touched bare skin.My heart instantly stopped. My eyes went wide in the mirror as panic

Marvel"Mavel... oh god, Mavel, what are we going to do?" Ginger panted, pressing her back hard against the cold bars of our cell. Her chest was moving up and down fast, and her eyes were wide with total panic. "Listen to them out there! They're screaming! Everyone is screaming!""Shut up and let me think!" I snapped at her, gritting my teeth as I tried to move my bad leg. A sharp, burning pain shot all the way up to my hip, but I forced myself to sit up straight. I stared at the locked iron door, my eyes cold and sharp. "I am not going to sit in this stupid cage and wait to get bitten. We are getting out of here."Outside our cell, the whole police station was in pure chaos. Loud sirens were blowing nonstop from the street, and heavy gunshots echoed down the hall, followed by scary, unnatural screams.Suddenly, the heavy iron door at the end of the hallway burst open. A police officer stumbled inside. His face was pale as a bedsheet, and his hands were shaking so badly he could barel

BrownI stood near the bunker's airlock door, double-checking every strap on my tactical vest while Rex stood right at my knee. Outside, through the heavy glass window, a thin, reddish drizzle was lightly falling from dark, heavy clouds. It was just a gentle sprinkle, barely speckling the gravel path and making the mountain rocks slick. To anyone else, it looked like a strange, harmless weather anomaly. They had no idea this light mist was just a warning, and that the rain would soon turn into a heavy, crushing downpour."Listen to me, Rex," I said, keeping my voice low and firm. "You cannot bite to kill. Strictly non-lethal. Avoid their throats, heads, and main blood vessels completely. Just use your claws, or bite down on their arms or legs just enough to pin them so I can carry out my mission. Got it?"Rex tilted his big head, looking right at me, and gave a loud, sharp bark to show he understood. Before I could unlock the heavy outer door, the System's cold screen popped up right

BrownI backed the Ford pickup into the underground bay of the Mount Ironwood bunker. The heavy steel blast doors shut tight behind me.Without wasting a second, I jumped down from the cab, my full-figured frame moving with swift, practiced efficiency. I grabbed a hand jack and unloaded the giant pallet of syringes from the truck bed. Sweating from the heavy lifting, I pushed the wooden crate deep into the main storage room, lining it up next to our trauma kits, water supplies, and dog food.I wiped the sweat off my forehead and checked my watch. The red screen blinked back at me: 3 HOURS LEFT.Three hours until Day Zero.I drove straight back to my penthouse. Rex was waiting inside the living room. The second I walked through the front door, his big tail started thumping on the floorboards.I collapsed onto the couch for a few minutes. I hadn't rested in days, and every muscle in my body ached. Once I caught my breath, I packed up the last few things we needed—my legal papers, extra
