Chapter 7

Auteur: Reflection Poetry
The truck soon reached Warren’s hotel.

Once Wesley parked, Leah spoke to Martin in the front.

“Mr. Lewis, you and Wesley can head back. Thank you for all your help! Please leave the truck here. I’ll need it over the next couple of days.”

“Of course, Miss Young. Shall we help you take everything upstairs?”

“No, thanks. A friend asked me to bring these for her. She’ll come and collect them tomorrow!”

“All right. We’ll head back, then.”

After Martin and Wesley left, Vivian asked in confusion.

“Sweetheart, aren’t we taking all those boxes up?”

“No, Mom. Let’s leave them in the truck for now! Moving them around would draw too much attention, and it would be a hassle.”

She took Vivian’s hand and hurried into the hotel lobby.

They asked the front desk for Warren’s room number, took the elevator to the third floor, and soon reached Room 307.

Leah knocked and called softly.

“Dad, it’s us.”

Warren stood and opened the door almost as soon as he heard her knock.

Ever since his wife and daughter called and told him not to set foot outside the hotel, he had been anxious. He had not even eaten lunch!

The door opened.

Leah saw her father standing before her, safe and well, and her eyes filled with tears again!

She threw her arms around him. As when she first saw her mother that morning, she felt relief and joy, along with a hurt she could not quite explain!

In her previous life, she only saw Warren again after the earthquake. He lay in a hospital bed in Bayport, his face pale and his left leg in a cast.

Leah gathered herself, took both her parents by the hand, and hurried into the suite.

She closed the door behind them and turned the lock with a click.

Then she surveyed the layout.

Fortunately, Warren had booked a spacious business suite.

The living area sat in the middle, with a separate bedroom on either side between it and the neighboring rooms.

That would keep their voices from carrying into the neighboring rooms!

Leah went to the windows and drew the heavy blackout curtains.

She searched every corner of the suite for cameras or listening devices, then closed both bedroom doors once she was sure there were none.

Only then did she ask her parents to sit on the sofa in the living area.

Warren and Vivian had watched their daughter’s strange behavior since she entered.

Now they looked at each other, speechless!

They stared at Leah, waiting for an explanation.

Leah pulled up a chair and sat opposite them.

She took a deep breath, trying to steady herself and decide how to begin.

She searched for a way to ease her parents into the truth. But the apocalypse, her rebirth, and the earthquake sounded unbelievable in any order.

“Leah, is this about what you said earlier? That you’ve been reborn and you knew the earthquake was coming?”

Vivian could not wait any longer.

“What? Reborn?”

Warren’s voice rose in surprise.

“Shh...”

Leah quickly motioned for him to lower his voice.

Since Vivian had brought it up, Leah decided to tell them directly.

“Yes, Mom, Dad. I’ve been reborn! I know that sounds impossible! But please believe me!”

She picked up her phone and checked the time.

5:03 p.m.!

“Mom, Dad, I can’t see the future. I know what’s coming because I lived through it in my previous life. Around this time, a little after five, an earthquake struck near Palmhaven...”

She told her parents exactly what had happened during the earthquake in her previous life.

She described the earthquake’s location and timing, the beach chairs swept into the sea, the hotel windows that shattered, and the airport flooded by seawater...

She and Vivian were stranded on Palmhaven for three days after transportation shut down.

Warren, frantic with worry, was in a car accident on his way to find them.

Leah told them every detail she could remember!

When she finished, silence filled the living room.

Warren and Vivian sat motionless on the sofa, unable to take it in.

Leah saw their stunned faces and decided to tell them everything at once.

They could come to terms with it afterward!

“Mom, Dad, the earthquake broke Dad’s left leg, but our family survived it.

“What really matters is that the apocalypse will begin in two months!”

“The apocalypse? You mean the end of the world?”

“Yes. The kind of apocalypse that turns the entire world into a wasteland.

“First come typhoons, then tsunamis, months of relentless rain, extreme cold, endless darkness, scorching heat, insect plagues, and epidemics...

“One disaster follows another. I don’t know how long it lasts or what other disasters come next because our whole family died in the fourth year!”

She told them everything that had happened on the last day of her previous life.

The longer she spoke, the harder it became to hold herself together.

By the end, tears streamed down her face, and she could barely get the words out!

Vivian quivered with fear as she listened. She covered her mouth, but she could not stop sobbing!

When Leah described Raymond’s family betraying them, Warren clenched his fist and struck the sofa.

“They’re worse than animals!”

His voice was hoarse with anger and disappointment.

“I knew they were selfish and always looking for something to take. I never imagined they could be cold enough to betray their own family!”

By the time Leah finished, her parents believed much of what she had told them.

Leah gathered herself and checked the time.

It was already 5:52 p.m.!

She picked up the remote and turned on the television. Tavaria’s news channel was running continuous coverage of the Palmhaven earthquake.

The reports matched every detail Leah had described!

They watched footage of huge waves rising over the beach, people fleeing, lounge chairs swept out to sea, shattered windows, and a flooded airport runway...

Warren and Vivian stared at the screen, their mouths open!

“It... it’s true. All of it’s true...”

Warren pointed at the television, his hand trembling.

“Sweetheart, then... then what do we do now? Is the apocalypse really coming in two months?”

Vivian struggled to get the words out.

“It is coming!”

Leah’s voice was certain.

“But this time, our story will end differently!”

Lucas continued to the right side of the basement and pulled back a black curtain. Behind it was a small drone control station.Several monitors displayed live drone footage of the surrounding area. Black cases sat beneath them.“You can trade these for almost anything these days.”Lucas opened one case. A black multi-rotor drone lay inside.“It’s an industrial-grade reconnaissance drone, built to resist jamming.“It can survey the area from above, monitor conditions, and help locate targets.”He closed the case and nudged a heavier metal one beside it with his foot.“This is an attack drone. It carries an explosive charge, moves fast, and can be controlled remotely.“The next case holds loitering munitions. Once one locks onto a target, it dives and detonates on its own. You don’t need to guide it in.”Lucas let the curtain fall and walked to the middle of the room.He bent down and lifted the corner of a dark green wooden crate.Neat rows of ammunition boxes sat in padded compartment

Lucas’ refusal was polite but immediate.“I know you can.”Leah met his eyes with certainty.“I found you here. That should tell you how much I know about you.”Her expression seemed to say there was no point denying it.Lucas narrowed his eyes and studied her.He had no memory of her, yet her eyes held the same weary distance he knew in himself, as though she too had seen too many people die.But she was so young. She also looked at him with unmistakable warmth and honesty. He was sure she meant him no harm. For reasons he could not explain, he felt he should trust her.At last, Lucas stubbed out his cigarette. He spoke quietly.“Come inside.”They passed through the steel door and entered a courtyard.A modified SUV stood in the middle.Discarded tires lay piled against one wall. They followed a gravel path to a drab brick building at the far end.Lucas opened the door. The furnishings inside were old and sparse.A low table with chipped paint stood beside two wooden chairs with croo

A dusty Land Cruiser bounced over the rutted road. It left the city and turned into a cluster of abandoned concrete buildings on the south side.William stopped outside an ordinary-looking gray building and knocked on a heavy steel door. The door opened. The man who answered stood about six foot one. A fitted black tactical shirt showed off his broad shoulders and narrow waist. He had sharp features, a straight nose, and a strong jaw. A short scar crossed his left eyebrow, but it only added to his rugged good looks. His eyes caught Leah’s attention most. They were deep and still, with a weary distance that suggested he had seen too much death.Leah got out of the car and hurried to the door.“Lucas!”Her voice trembled. In her previous life, Lucas collapsed outside her house on a night of pouring rain, covered in blood. She dragged him out of the mud, treated his wounds, gave him medicine, and cared for him for two months.Once he recovered, he became the best friend she trusted most.

“Miss Young, call me again if you need anything.”Harrison drove off before Leah could reply.Leah checked in again, passed through security, and boarded a flight to Kavell at 12:40 p.m. Dunehaven time.Three hours later, the plane landed at Kavell International Airport.Leah changed into a long-sleeved black jumpsuit before boarding.Once the plane landed, she tied back her hair and put on the blue robe she bought in Dunehaven. She wrapped a scarf around her hair and neck, leaving only her eyes visible. She picked up her backpack and stepped out of the plane. Hot air filled her nose with the smell of dry dust, jet fuel, and diesel exhaust.Leah remembered what Lucas said about Kavell’s unmistakable smell. There was no jet bridge. A shuttle bus dropped the passengers outside a low, weathered building with yellow walls. That was Kavell’s international terminal. Concrete barriers and blast walls stood outside, but no flag marked the building. The line for arrival checks moved slowly. The

Six and a half hours later, the plane landed in Dunehaven. When the cabin door opened, cool early morning air carried the smell of jet fuel inside.Leah rubbed her stiff neck and followed the other passengers off the plane.Once she cleared immigration, she headed straight for a man holding a sign near the arrivals exit. The sign read “MISS YOUNG,” with a phone number scrawled beneath it.He was Harrison Moore, the Afarran visa agent Leah contacted through a dark-web forum before her flight. He regularly handled applications at the consulate. He looked about forty. His navy suit fit poorly, his skin was dark, and a gold tooth showed when he smiled.“Miss Young? Passport and two photos with white backgrounds. I’ll take care of the invitation letter.”He spoke quickly and skipped the pleasantries.Leah handed him her passport, the photos, and a thick stack of bills totaling $800.Three hundred covered his fee and the money needed to smooth things over at the consulate. The rest paid for

This time, Leah collected the medicines before disaster struck, and she still had time to stockpile plenty of other supplies. The thought made her happy. In her previous life, her family had medicines, yet supplies were so scarce that they could not even trade them for a decent meal. She got a second chance, and she meant to beat the apocalypse.About twenty minutes later, the plane leveled out.A flight attendant approached Leah’s seat and told her the onboard shower was ready. She escorted Leah to its door.Leah thanked her, stepped inside, and finished her shower in five minutes.Water was too precious during the apocalypse. Four years of scarcity taught her to wash quickly. She picked up a hair dryer, ready to dry her wet hair.Soft light fell across the mirror. Leah looked up and barely recognized herself. It was the first time she saw her reflection since her rebirth. Her skin was almost unnaturally fair. Under the light, it glowed with a cool pallor, and she could faintly see t
