Erase the Evidence

Jayden thought he could act the ‘man’. He snapped out of his shock, his eyes flaring with rage.

“Okay, I don't know what you think you're up to, or what sort of rat ass move you just pulled, but you have gone way too far, Amber!” He roared as he lunged forward, intending to tackle me and stop my madness before it could even begin.

But I didn't hesitate for even half a second. Five years in hell had stripped me of any hesitation. I gripped the handle of the metal bat with both hands and swung it with everything I had.

CLANG!

The heavy metal connected right with the side of his head. The brutal force completely threw him off balance, sending him crashing hard against the nightstand, breaking the wood in the process.

He let out a choked groan, blood instantly pooling down his temple.

Karen let out a piercing shriek. Terrified, she tried to scramble out of the opposite side of the bed to run, but I was already moving around her. As her bare feet hit the floorboards, I brought the bat swinging down in a low, vicious arc.

CRACK!

The metal smacked heavily over her shins. Karen screamed in pure agony, collapsing onto the floor, clutching her legs as tears of absolute terror streamed down her face.

And so came the brutal torture. Every strike of the bat was for the starvation I endured, the slaps I took, the five years of playing the fool, and the final, cold sting of their teeth and blade. I didn't stop until the bedroom was painted in a grim crimson.

Once they were both covered in blood, barely breathing, and reduced to groaning heaps on the floor, I stopped. I lowered the bat, my breath rattling heavily in the quiet room and looked down at my hands, waiting for the dream to shatter.

But I wasn't waking up.

The copper smell of blood was very real. The burning in my unconditioned muscles was too sharp. This dream... it was either lasting much longer than it ever should, or this fact was finally undeniable: I had been given a second chance.

Suddenly, that same sharp ping from earlier chimed in my mind, and the glowing blue system screen opened right before my eyes.

[First Quest Completed!]

—Result: Scum neutralized.

—Reward: 1x Random Skill: [Evidence Erasure] (Level 1)

Ah, what is this? I looked at the reward I had gotten and then back at the crime scene I had just created. It's so handy, I thought, a dark smile returning to my face. This system is incredibly generous.

The skill details flashed briefly. It was a once-a-day use skill, capable of erasing my involvement in any crime I committed, and so, it was exactly what I needed.

I instantly activated it. Right before my eyes, a faint light enveloped the bedroom.

The metal bat in my hand completely dissolved into thin air. The blood splatters covering my clothes, face, and arms vanished instantly, leaving my body entirely clean. The crime scene itself warped, rewriting the physical evidence to make it look like Jayden and Karen had gotten into a violent, psychotic domestic dispute with each other and had been throwing things at each other.

With a completely clean slate, I took a deep breath, walked out to the living room, and picked up my phone to dial emergency services.

The moment the line connected, I forced the tears back into my voice, crying hysterically into the receiver. "Please! Send an ambulance! I… I don't know what happened but there… there's blood everywhere and… they're barely breathing. Please, come quick." I sobbed.

“Please, stay calm, ma'am. Tell me your location and we'll be there right away.”

When the ambulance and police arrived, I gave my statement perfectly, playing the part of the shattered, traumatized girlfriend.

I told them through heavy sobs how I had caught them cheating, how I had slapped Jayden in a fit of rage and bolted out of the room. I had thousands of witness from my live stream to vouch for that.

But then I came back because I wanted to hear their explanation—it was just too hard to believe. Why would they do something like that to me? Why would they betray me? And then... that's when I saw the horrific, bloody scene inside.

Without a single shred of blood on my body, no forensic evidence linking me to the injuries, and the actual weapon entirely missing from existence, the police had nothing to hold me on but I was taken to the police station to give an official statement.

The cops looked at me with pity, hearing my story with those two and then having to witness that bloody scene. And I made sure to play my part perfectly.

After a few hours of questioning, the precinct finally set me free.

I walked out of the police station, stretching my sore arms as I looked out at the horizon. The sun was just setting, casting a deep, blood-red hue over the city. Yes, the sun just set on a bad end, but tomorrow, it would rise to an entirely new beginning.

With those two heavily hospitalized and the system subtly wiping part of their memories regarding my involvement, they would be completely broken, trapped in hospital beds when the world collapsed. They wouldn't be able to survive a single day of the outbreak. This was their ultimate punishment.

Lucien stared at the two of us.His eyes dragged over Daniel’s sweat-slicked skin, the flushed heat radiating off his body, and then locked onto mine with an unreadable, suffocating intensity. The silence stretched long and taut, filled only by Daniel’s rough, uneven breathing."A spiked drink," Lucien repeated slowly, his voice dropping an octave, danger pulsing through every syllable. His dark gaze didn't leave my face. "So... what exactly do you plan to do with him now that he’s like this, Amber?"He already knew the answer. I could see it in the slight clench of his jaw, the hard, possessive flare in his eyes. But he wanted to hear it straight from my mouth—wanted me to own it."He needs to get rid of the drug, Lucien," I said smoothly, my voice remaining cool even as Daniel’s hand gripped my hip just a little tighter, his feverish body heavy against my side."He can burn it out with someone else," Lucien growled, taking a broad step forward until he was towering over both of us.

Amber’s POVI didn't answer him right away. The sharp, metallic scent of the supply bay mixed with the intoxicating heat radiating off his body, pulling a low sigh from my lips."I'm not pushing you away," I whispered, my fingers knotting firmly into the collar of his shirt, tugging him down until his forehead rested against mine. "Because I knew from a long time ago that you already lost your damn mind before we met. It's not any different now. It's just… you’ve gotten bolder."His dark eyes flared with raw, dangerous satisfaction. A low, ragged growl ripped from his throat as his mouth slammed down onto mine—hard, demanding, and completely stripped of any lingering hesitation. The kiss tasted like fire and dark whiskey, a hungry, possessive clash that sent my pulse spiking to match his.His broad hands slid up from my hips, mapping the line of my waist before anchoring themselves firmly against the small of my back, crushing me against his chest. Lucien sat back in his chair, his eyes narrowing into dangerous slits as he watched the scene unfold. His sharp gaze flicked from the empty glass to Daniel's flushed face, and finally to Celestine's pale, trembling expression. He didn't stop Daniel, but a dark curiosity burned in his eyes as he wondered what the hell his second-in-command was up to.Daniel leaned in close to Celestine's ear as he dragged her into the dark corridor, his voice dropping into a deadly, low whisper. "I know what you did. I know your little plan. If you ever try a stunt like that again, I'm going to tell Lucien everything. Instead of Amber, you'll be the one thrown out to be zombie food."Celestine froze, completely paralyzed by fear, as Daniel pushed open the heavy wooden doors and walked out into the cool corridor.Within three minutes, a violent, raging heat flared up from the pit of Daniel's stomach, coursing through his veins like liquid fire. The drug was hitting his system hard—a potent, overwhelmin

Lucien’s dark, storm-cloud eyes held mine, searching my expression for any telltale sign of deceit. But all he found was absolute, unflinching confidence. A slow, dangerous chuckle vibrated deep in his chest, his large palm tightening ever so slightly against the nape of my neck, pulling me just half an inch closer."I give you an inch, and you swallow the whole damn territory," Lucien murmured, his thumb stroking the soft skin behind my ear. "No engine noise. No tire marks. Just three heavy vehicles vanished from a locked compound. You're a terrifying creature, sweetheart.""I prefer the term 'efficient,'" I replied, my voice smooth as silk as my hand slid up his chest, feeling the heavy, steady thud of his heart against my palm. "Besides, you promised me those assets. I just saved your crew the fuel and labor of transporting them. And where would I even keep them if not your property? This is my home now, after all."From the doorway, Daniel let out a low, amused whistle, pushing o

"If you're always so damn curious about a lady's secrets, you'll never get a girlfriend," I retorted, stepping past him into the echoing hangar.Daniel let out a sharp, amused bark of laughter, pushing off the doorframe to keep pace right behind me. "Who says I'm looking for a girlfriend, Feisty? I prefer high-maintenance complications. And there’s one right here in front of me."I ignored his grin, striding straight up to the first matte-black G-Wagon. The night air felt charged, almost heavy, as his hands gripped my waist, anchoring me to the stone edge. The sheer drop of the compound was behind me, but with Lucien filling my line of sight, danger was the last thing on my mind."You always know how to negotiate, don't you?" he growled softly, leaning down so his mouth brushed the column of my throat. His hands slid up beneath the hem of my top, his rough palms hot against my skin.I arched into his touch, my fingers tangling into his thick hair, pulling him closer. "I only negotiate when I know I'm going to win, actually.""Is that so?" Lucien murmured, his teeth lightly skimming my collarbone, sending a sharp spark straight down my spine.
