Katie watched herself on the screen.

The footage showed her entering the hotel room, followed by the argument with Marcos. It captured enough of their conversation to raise questions she couldn't afford to answer. One wrong move, one person seeing the recording, and everything she had worked to protect could fall apart.

Yet she felt nothing as she watched herself threaten the man.

“Copy it onto this first,” she said, placing a blank CD on the desk.

Marcos looked at the disc, then at her. “You b

“I had no choice.” She lowered her voice. “I was already planning to divorce him anyways. I knew our marriage was over, but I didn't know how to leave safely or how to protect myself. Then I discovered the baby, and everything became more complicated.”Raymond stared at her, struggling to absorb everything she had revealed.“Eric is the father,” Amanda continued quickly. “I know that but I don't want to stay married to him. I don't want to raise this child in a home where I am constantly mistreated. I kept the pregnancy from him because I needed time to find a way out and prepare myself.”Raymond's expression softened, though concern still filled his eyes. “You should have told someone.”“I was afraid.” She wiped away a tear. “I was afraid no one would understand. I was afraid you would think I had deceived you, or that you would see me differently because the baby belongs to Eric.”Raymond reached for her hands. “I don't see you differently.”“You should.” Amanda sobbed.“No.” His vo

Later that evening, after the treatment had eased her symptoms and the hospital had completed its checks, Amanda was allowed to leave. She kept the prescription and follow-up instructions safely in her bag. Raymond helped her out of bed and supported her as they walked toward the waiting area. The moment they reached the chairs, he turned and wrapped his arms around her. Amanda stiffened in surprise before slowly holding him back. “You scared me,” he whispered against her hair. “I thought something terrible had happened.” “I'm sorry.” “Don't apologise. I'm just glad you're standing here.” He pulled back to look at her face. “Are you sure you can go home?” “The doctor says I can, as long as I take the medicine and come back for the follow-up tests.” “Then we'll make sure you do.” Amanda looked at him, and the words stirred something painful inside her. We'll. He said it as though he had a place in her future, as though he hadn't heard his father's objections or understood the r

At the next turn, the hospital sign appeared through the rain. Raymond took the corner too quickly, corrected the wheel, and kept his eyes on the entrance ahead.“Hold on, Amanda,” he whispered. She didn't answer. Her hand slipped from her stomach and fell against the seat. Raymond looked over, saw her still breathing, and pressed harder on the accelerator as the hospital lights grew nearer. When he finally reached the emergency entrance, he braked hard and jumped out before the car had fully settled. He ran around to Amanda's side, pulled open the door, and called desperately for help."Please! Somebody help me!”Two hospital workers hurried toward him with a wheelchair. Raymond tried to explain that Amanda was in terrible pain, but he had no answers when they asked what had happened. They helped her out of the car, and Amanda cried out again, grabbing Raymond's hand so tightly that her nails dug into his skin.“Don't leave me,” she begged.“I won't,” he answered immediately.A nurse

“Wait.”Everyone turned toward him.“What now?” Butcher demanded.Ghost looked at the bags, then toward the fortress. Rain hammered the vehicle’s roof.“I just remembered something. The man who gave us this job told us to destroy some of her things, didn't he?”Darius frowned. “What are you talking about?”“We were supposed to steal what we could and damage the property. We took the supplies, but barely touched anything else.”“Damn it,” Butcher muttered. “He's right.”Viper looked through the windshield. “We've ransacked the place and taken major supplies. Isn't that enough?”“No,” Darius said. “If our employer wanted us to steal a few boxes, he could have sent anybody. He paid us to make a mess, too.”Tank glanced at the bags. “So we're going back?”“We finish the job, then we leave.”Viper sighed and turned the vehicle around. When they reached the fortress again, the rain had grown heavier. Wind drove water across the grounds, and the gate swung on its damaged hinges with a deep m

Nobody laughed this time. Darius looked at the shelves again. The joke had touched something he couldn't quite explain. There was too much food, too much water, and too much medicine. Amanda had even stored fuel and equipment for emergencies. He remembered seeing her being carried to the car. Whatever was happening to that woman, he thinks she had been preparing for something long before tonight but that wasn't his concern. He had been paid to get inside and take what he could. He wasn't going to lose his chance because he suddenly wanted to understand a stranger's decisions.“Ghost, pack those tablets but leave the unimportant ones behind.”Ghost looked at him. “You really want to leave her supplies?”“I want us to be swift and leave before someone catches us. Now move.”They filled their bags and carried them toward the hallway. Butcher disappeared into the medical room, where he found more equipment arranged along the walls. He stopped in the doorway, staring. “Darius! Come and se

Raymond slammed the car into gear and pulled away from Amanda's fortress. The tires skidded across the wet gravel before catching the road, and he tightened his grip on the steering wheel as Amanda cried out beside him.“I'm here, Amanda. Just hold on.”She had her eyes squeezed shut, one hand pressed against her stomach. Her face had lost its colour, and every few seconds, a small, broken sound escaped her lips.“It hurts so bad please hurry,” she whimpered.“We're going straight to the hospital.”He glanced at her again, fighting the urge to look away from the road for too long. He had never seen Amanda like this. She was usually the woman who had an answer for everything, the woman who could look him in the eye even when the whole world seemed determined to bring her down. Now she could barely speak.“Raymond?” She spoke quietly.“I'm listening.”“Don't let anything happen to me please.”His throat tightened. “Nothing is going to happen to you. We're getting you help.”He wanted to
