LOGINPOV AMARA
“In the apocalypse you learn two rules fast. Never turn your back on the ceiling, and never hesitate to share the loot with the beast watching your back.” “Nikolai, get down!” I shout before my brain even finishes processing the creature’s size. The Commander does not ask why. He drops into a forward roll exactly as the Stalker’s bony claws slash down like scythes where his head was a moment before. The blow strikes the concrete floor, gouging a trench ten centimeters deep. Shards of stone fly in every direction. This monster is nothing like the street zombies outside. It is all elongated muscle and taut grey skin stretched tight over bone, its spine ridged with sharp, saw-like protrusions. Four lidless yellow eyes swivel independently, locking onto me with an intelligence and hunger that makes my skin crawl. “It is a second-generation mutant!” Nikolai calls out from the floor, springing back to his feet as dark plate-armour reforms over his arms and shoulders. “Its skin is harder than light plating. Do not try to block it head-on!” The Stalker lets out a high-pitched hiss, like steam escaping a broken boiler, and moves with absurd speed. In the blink of an eye it vanishes from the wall and reappears barely two meters away, sweeping its right claw in a diagonal slash. Its talons drip with a thick fluid that hisses and melts the paint off the metal lockers where it splashes. [Tactical Warning: Corrosive attack incoming] [Suggested Ability: ‘Shadow Step’ — Emergency Activation] The world washes out to a metallic grey for a split second. I feel an invisible pull at my centre of gravity. My body dissolves into a wisp of dark smoke just as the creature’s claws slice through the empty air where I stood. I reappear three meters to its left, right behind its unprotected flank. “Amara!” Nikolai roars, startled by my sudden shift, but his military instinct does not fail him. Seizing the moment the creature overcommitted and stumbled, Nikolai throws his full weight forward. His plated fist slams directly into the mutant’s rear knee. The sickening crack of snapping bone echoes through the entire lobby. The Stalker shrieks in agony, spinning blindly around to snap at Nikolai’s throat with a double row of jagged fangs. Nikolai thrusts his left forearm straight into its gaping maw to block the bite. The biomechanical layer over his skin holds against the crushing pressure with a screech of grinding enamel, but the acid begins to sizzle and eat away at him. “Now, woman!” Nikolai grunts, straining against the monster’s weight, the veins in his neck bulging. “I am not going to be its chew toy all day!” My tactical vision highlights the truth in glowing gold. Its core is not in the neck, it sits deep in the centre of its chest, protected by a cage of deformed ribs that expand and contract with each ragged breath. “Hold it steady!” I call back. I grip the ion dagger with both hands. The high-frequency blade hums, glowing with blinding blue light. Two quick strides across the slippery floor, I use the concrete pillar to launch myself upward, and come crashing down onto the creature’s back with all my weight. I lock my legs around its neck to keep my position, and drive the blade down with savage precision, burying it deep into the soft gap between its chest plates. The energy blade pierces through the hardened flesh and strikes something hard, a fist-sized crystalline node. A burst of energy detonates inside the monster. The dripping acid stops flowing, its claws go limp, and all four yellow eyes dim instantly. The massive carcass slams heavily onto the ground, kicking up a cloud of dust and concrete chips. [Phase 2 Mutant, Alpha Stalker, eliminated] [Minor Boss Reward earned: 300 Warfare Points] [Loot Unlocked: 1x Genetic Purification Pill, Rank A, 1x Anti-Mutant Assault Rifle with armour-piercing ammunition] [Spatial Inventory Activated: Unlimited carrying capacity, Slot 1/10] I land lightly on my feet beside the corpse, breathing hard, my chest heaving from the rush. The creature’s crimson core dissolves into drifting red particles that flow directly into my open palm, stored safely within the system interface. At the same time, on top of an empty ammunition crate, a sealed glass vial filled with silvery liquid materialises, alongside a sleek black military rifle etched with glowing blue runes. Nikolai sits back down on a pile of rubble, lowering his bleeding arm. The dark skin of his forearm shows smoking burns where the acid touched him, but his gaze is fixed firmly on the rifle that appeared out of thin air. “You are definitely not human,” he says, breathless, his voice a mixture of awe and deep suspicion. “That is not Federation technology. And what you just did… moving like that…” “It is called staying alive, Lanston,” I say, walking over without breaking my stride. “And if you do not appreciate the show, I could always let the next lizard creature eat your whole arm next time.” I retrieve the silvery serum from my inventory and toss it toward him without hesitation. He catches it mid-air, frowning deeply. “What is this?” “A Rank A genetic purification serum,” I tell him, picking up the new rifle and checking the magazine with practiced ease. “That acid is eating through your skin, and the wound in your chest is still unstable. Drink it. I have no use for a husband who turns into a zombie halfway through our journey.” Nikolai stares at me in silence for several seconds. He knows poison, betrayal, and high society lies better than most. His own family and commanders cast him aside the moment his mutation got out of hand. It is obvious he is not used to anyone handing him an advantage without demanding something painful in return. Without a word, he bites off the cap with his teeth and swallows the entire contents in one gulp. The effect is almost immediate. The black smoke rising from his burns fades away, the raw, melted skin knits itself back together before my eyes, and his ashen complexion clears to a healthy, tanned glow. He stands up, rolling his shoulders, and I can hear his spine crackle with renewed strength. “Tastes like absolute garbage,” he mutters, wiping his mouth on the back of his hand, though his eyes shine with fierce vitality. “But it works.” “Save your thanks,” I say, heading toward the inner armoury gate. “We have an entire weapons cache waiting for us.” Suddenly, from the guard station in the corner, an old military shortwave radio crackles to life. Static hisses, then a green light blinks on the console and a voice breaks through, shaking with sobs and raw terror: “…Please, any unit from the Third Brigade receiving this! …This is the Wilson family! …The helicopter went down on the roof of the North Shopping Centre! …We are surrounded by hundreds of those things! …Father is injured and we have no weapons! …Someone please come for us!” Nikolai freezes mid-step. He turns his head toward the radio, then looks straight at me, a cold, sharp smile curling his lips. “Well now. Looks like karma didn’t even wait two hours to send my dear relatives their bill.”POV AMARA“There is nothing more satisfying than watching an army of nightmares shatter against a wall of fire that you yourself kindled.”The anti-materiel rifle kicks hard against my shoulder, recoil hitting with the force of a pneumatic piston. The round blazes forth wrapped in a tight spiral of blue plasma and searing white flame, tearing through the air with a low, thunderous crack. One thousand five hundred metres below, it punches straight through the centre of the first Hive Commander’s exposed cerebral mass. The detonation is colossal. That four-armed monstrosity does not simply collapse. Purifying Fire ignites inside it like a white phosphorus charge, spraying a rain of blazing embers that instantly incinerates nearly fifty infected clustered around it. Without the synaptic link holding them together, roughly two thousand infected at the vanguard lose all coordination at once. They stumble blindly into one another, tumbling over the steep roadside embankment and vanishing do
POV AMARA“Peace at the end of the world lasts exactly as long as it takes ten thousand starving dead to smell fresh meat behind your walls.”That crimson stain spreading across the satellite map does not simply move, it boils.Through the long-range cameras mounted high on the mountain cliffs, the four-lane highway below looks like an overflowing river of tar. There is no empty space left on the asphalt. Thousands of misshapen bodies surge shoulder to shoulder, shoving and scrambling over one another, climbing across the roofs of overturned trucks, kicking up a thick grey dust cloud that blots out the sun like an endless plague of locusts.“Ten thousand strong,” Nikolai says, resting both palms flat against the tactical table. His voice is unnervingly calm, yet heavy enough to send a chill down my spine. “In the old military, it took two heavy artillery regiments plus saturation air bombardment just to hold back a migration this size.”“Well now it is just you, me, and whatever weapo
POV AMARA“Inheriting a high-tech bunker means nothing if the base’s electronic brain believes you and your husband are just two more walking corpses.”«Four seconds until fire purge» the flat voice recites through every speaker mounted around the hangar. The four heavy turrets rotate in perfect mechanical unison, their twin barrels locking onto our position. The electric hum of capacitors charging fills the vast steel chamber with a rising, unbearable vibration that settles deep in your bones.Nikolai plants his boots firmly on the grated floor, spreading his armoured arms wide to place himself as a living shield between me and the guns. The dark metallic plating crawls up his neck, hard and seamless against his skin, and every muscle in his back tenses as if he is already bracing to take a direct missile impact.«Three seconds…»“Get behind me, Amara!” he roars through gritted teeth, his jaw clenched tight. “My armour can absorb the first full burst, but the moment they fire, you ha
POV AMARA“Squeezing the trigger on a zombie is pure survival instinct. Squeezing it on the fool who tried to steal your future? That is poetic justice at its finest.”The barrel of my plasma pistol does not tremble by even a millimetre as it rests steady beneath Marcus Vance’s chin. The captain’s skin glistens with cold sweat. His pupils are blown so wide with terror that his irises are barely visible. The weapon hums with contained energy, the ozone and searing heat rising from it singeing the fine hairs along his jawline before I even begin to tighten my finger.“Wait… hold on, Amara…” he stammers, lifting both hands into the air, his fingers visibly trembling. “We can… we can work something out. This base has enough supplies to last for years. There is more than enough for everyone. Nikolai and I were brothers in arms in the Third Brigade…”“You were the cur who signed my confinement order while you looted my stockpiles for yourself, Marcus,” Nikolai’s voice cuts through the air b
POV AMARA“Leaving the ghosts of your past behind feels easy when the gates to your new empire stand waiting right in front of you.”The air at the foot of the mountain grows noticeably colder, yet it still carries that same foul, familiar stench of gunpowder and burnt flesh that has hung over the entire city since everything fell apart.Black Raven Fortress is far more than just another bunker. It is a massive structure carved deep into solid rock, ringed by towering six-metre retaining walls and a primary hydraulic gate forged from solid military-grade alloy, three metres thick and nearly impenetrable. In the old world, this place was the Federation’s most closely guarded secret. Now, it stands as the only sanctuary strong enough to survive the total collapse of civilization itself. We pause behind a low barricade of sandbags, roughly one hundred metres from the wide access ramp leading upward to the main gate. My tactical vision sweeps the entire perimeter instantly, overlaying eve
POV AMARA“It is funny how the very same people who once called you a street rat now look at you as if you were the only goddess left on earth.”Chloe’s shriek pierces the air. The zombie yanks at her leg with sickening strength, its black claws tearing through the denim of her trousers and digging straight into the skin beneath. Its jaw hangs open, gums raw and bleeding, teeth yellow and jagged, snapping inches from her exposed ankle.“Amara! For heaven’s sake, shoot it!” my father bellows from the ground, struggling to push himself upright, his injured arm clutched tight against his stomach. “I am your father, damn it! I order you to do something! Lanston, you are an officer of the Federation, uphold your oath and protect my family!”Nikolai lets out a dark, rumbling laugh that echoes across the entire rooftop, deep and cold as distant thunder. He lowers the muzzle of his military rifle, resting it casually against the pavement with clear disdain, then folds his arms across his ches
