MAREN’S POV

Nadia brought the corrected assessment to the office just after breakfast. I read the page while she stood beside the table, following the lines with her finger.

The latest clinical findings had finally been added to my record. “Does this lift the hold?” I asked, looking up at her.

“Not yet.” She pulled out the chair opposite mine. “The assessment has been updated. Trade access and the depot’s allocation are still under review.”

I read it again, trying to feel pleased about what

  • Apocalypse: Too Late To Want Me Back   THE EMPTY SPACES

CELESTE’S POVLucy had fallen asleep with her fingers caught in the sleeve of my cardigan, and I stayed beside her long after my arm began to ache. Every time I tried to move, her grip tightened, as though she could feel me leaving even in her sleep. The clinic card lay on the bedside table beneath her cup of water. I had read it so many times that I could have repeated every word without picking it up, but my eyes kept returning to the line someone had stamped beneath the date of her next review.'Confirmation pending household assignment.'That afternoon, the clinician had told me to bring Lucy back the following week. Then a woman behind the admissions desk had taken our card, checked something on her screen, and told me the appointment could not be confirmed until Grant accepted his revised duties.“She’s already been seen,” I had said, keeping one hand on Lucy’s shoulder while she leaned against my hip. “The doctor asked us to come back. He wrote it down.”“I can see the recommen

  • Apocalypse: Too Late To Want Me Back   THE CHOICE WAS MINE

RONAN’S POV“No,” I said. “The decision to withdraw was mine.”The woman kept hold of her supply slip. Maren stood beside the kitchen doorway, her hand resting against the frame.“But you were going to attend,” the woman said.“Yes. I had agreed to an assessment without telling the people who would have to manage while I was away.”Derek stopped beside Nadia. A few others had turned towards us, close enough to hear.I wanted somewhere quieter to explain it. After the notice Haven had circulated, asking everyone to wait for a private conversation would only leave them with more questions.“They hadn’t confirmed when I could leave,” I continued. “They required me to give up my phone and radio, and they hadn’t guaranteed the part would be released.”The woman looked down at her slip.“So why did you agree?”It was the question I had spent most of the night asking myself.“I thought going might move it forward. I made that judgment without bringing the full terms back here.”“And Maren ma

  • Apocalypse: Too Late To Want Me Back   THE SPACE I NEEDED

MAREN’S POVRonan’s bag was gone when I woke.I noticed the empty place beside the chair before I remembered asking him to leave. For a moment, I lay still, listening to the sounds outside my room.I had wanted him to cancel the appointment. He had cancelled it.That did not change the fact that I had spent the previous day discovering how much he had arranged without me.I dressed slowly and went to find Nadia. She gave me the updated water count without asking about the night before. I was grateful for that. There were figures I could check, names I could write down, and work that did not require me to explain why seeing Ronan’s empty chair still hurt.He came into the office while I was finishing the first page.“Morning,” he said, stopping near the table.“Morning.”“I’ve checked the collection with Derek. He has the road-post contact.”I nodded and wrote the confirmation beside the route.Ronan remained where he was for a moment.“Have you eaten?”“Not yet.”“I can bring you some

  • Apocalypse: Too Late To Want Me Back   BEFORE I LEFT

RONAN’S POVI looked at Maren sitting on the edge of the bed and tried to answer her.I had told myself I would explain before leaving. First when the terms became clearer, then when I had an answer about the part. Each unanswered question had given me another reason to wait.Meanwhile, I had packed.“I don’t know when I would have told you,” I said. Her eyes closed briefly.I wanted to reach for her. She had already asked me not to, and I stayed beside the table.“I kept moving it later in my head. I thought the next call would give me something better to bring you.”“And when it didn’t?”“I made another one.”Maren looked towards the bag at my feet.I followed her gaze and saw what she had seen when I came through the door: the clean shirt, the things I would need while I was away, a departure prepared before she had even read the terms.“I wanted to think I was getting ready for a difficult day,” I said. “But I packed because I didn’t know when I’d come back.”Her face tightened, a

  • Apocalypse: Too Late To Want Me Back   THE MORNING YOU PLANNED

MAREN’S POV“At dawn,” I repeated.Ronan lowered the bag to the floor. He did it carefully, as though a quiet movement might make the answer easier to hear.“I was going to tell you.”I looked at the folder on the table.“When?”“Tonight.”“Before or after I asked you to come?”He drew a breath, then let it out without answering.I opened the folder and placed the attendance terms between us. Nadia had clipped his questions behind them, along with the office’s replies.“I’ve read all of it,” I said. “Including the things they haven’t promised.”Ronan glanced at the pages.“Then you know I asked about the part.”“They haven’t agreed to release it.”“They’ve said it can be considered.”“And you’ve agreed to go.”His gaze returned to mine.“Yes.”I moved away from the table because I could not bear standing beside the bag.Outside, someone closed a door further along the corridor. I waited for the footsteps to pass before speaking again.“You told me I’d see the whole message.”“I know.”

  • Apocalypse: Too Late To Want Me Back   WHAT HE HAD PACKED

MAREN’S POV“What appointment?” I asked.Nadia looked up from the diary. For a moment, she seemed to be searching my face for something I had misunderstood.“The follow-up with the resources office.”“Has he agreed to the assessment?”“He told me he was following up the repair release.” She turned the diary towards me. Ronan’s name sat beside a short note about cover for the yard. “I haven’t seen anything confirming that he’s accepted their terms.”Neither had I.I set the roster down before the paper creased in my hand.“We need to see them.”Nadia nodded and reached for her phone. While she called the liaison desk, I pulled out the questions we had sent after the first notice. Duration. Contact. Who would carry out the review. What attending would actually secure for the depot. We had asked those questions together.I remembered Ronan sitting beside me while Nadia read them back.“Yes, I understand it’s an individual appointment,” Nadia said into the phone. “It concerns a release re
