Chapter 2

Author: Meet the Dawn
At the hotel, I gave my information to the front desk. The receptionist checked the booking, then looked at the three of us with a polite smile.

"Ma'am, you only reserved one room with two beds. Would you like to book a second room as well?"

I glanced back at Becca, gesturing for her to hand over her ID. But Nolan had his arm around her, as if the answer should be obvious.

"Becca's not feeling well. I'll take the double with her so I can keep an eye on her. You can get your own room."

My grip on the suitcase handle tightened until my knuckles went white.

"Nolan, I'm your girlfriend."

A flicker of impatience crossed his face. "Fiona, she's your best friend. When did you get so petty?

"This room has a better view and softer beds. She'll be more comfortable in it. You're tough; you've slept on a plywood cot before. A single room isn't going to kill you."

Every word made it sound like I was the one being unreasonable. He took the key card from the front desk and walked toward the elevator without looking back.

Becca tugged gently at his sleeve, looking faintly disapproving. "Nolan, you can't talk to Fiona like that."

But he just ruffled the back of her hair. "It's fine. Once you're well-rested, we'll all have a better time."

When he turned to look at me, every trace of warmth vanished from his face. "If you can't figure that out, stay here and think about it."

The two of them walked off together, and I stood there alone.

During the years Nolan was getting his business off the ground, I lived with him in a rental barely bigger than a parking space. That plywood cot was the best piece of furniture we owned. And now he was throwing it in my face.

I'd lost count of how many times he'd left me to deal with everything on my own. It hadn't always been like this. He used to say that the silent treatment was the fastest way to kill a relationship, that communication was what mattered most.

A tissue appeared in front of me. I looked up and met the worried eyes of the receptionist, and only then did I realize my cheeks were soaked with tears.

That night, a knock came at my door.

"Fiona, it's me."

I got up and opened it. Nolan stood there holding a hot water bottle against his chest.

"You didn't look good today. Your period's probably coming."

The warm light from the hallway softened his features, and for a second, it almost felt like he loved me.

He told me to lie down and pressed his hand against my stomach, rubbing gently. The warmth of his palm made me want to lean into it, just for a little longer.

"Fiona, her back injury was my fault. That's why I've been looking after her more. Don't be jealous.

"And the room thing, I only took the double because you're a light sleeper. I work late, and I'd just keep you up."

Everything he said sounded so considerate, like it was all for my sake. The walls I'd just started building were already beginning to crack. The word "okay" sat right on the tip of my tongue.

Then his next sentence knocked it right back down.

"Get some sleep early tonight. That way you can head out in the morning to pick up pastries from Bellamy's. The line takes a few hours, and I don't want Becca waiting around hungry."

His hand kept moving in the same slow circles, but the warmth against my skin suddenly felt like nothing at all. So that was why he came.

I pulled away from his hand and quietly shifted to the other side of the bed. He paused for a moment but kept going.

"Make sure you don't get anything too heavy. Becca's been trying to watch her weight.

"And nothing too sweet either. It hurts her teeth."

I lay there and listened. Since Becca came into the picture, this was the most he'd said to me at one time.

My pillow was wet with tears.

Nolan stared at the phone screen, his grip on Becca's arm tightening inch by inch."Nolan, that hurts!"This time, Becca's tears were real. He flung her off and she hit the ground, scraping the skin off her palms."Becca, I thought I treated you well. Why would you lie to me like this?" His face was ashen, and the way he looked at her had gone ice cold."Why?"Becca tried to argue. "Nolan, it's not what you think...""Talk."The single word cut through the air like a whip, and her sobbing stopped dead. Between his fury and the stares closing in from every direction, something in her snapped. She picked herself up off the ground and dropped the act entirely."Fine. I did it on purpose. So what?"I was jealous of Fiona. Her mom was dead and her dad wanted nothing to do with her. I thought I'd get to watch her fall apart. I never expected you to actually make it."The soft, innocent mask she'd worn for so long shattered, and underneath it was nothing but raw, undiluted spite.N

The snow came down harder and harder. Nolan was on his knees, digging through it with bare hands, his fingers already raw and red from the cold."It fell right here. How can I not find it?"By morning, he was gone. I assumed he'd given up and left on his own. But the moment I went downstairs, I heard that a man had been found passed out in the snow earlier that morning and rushed to the hospital."Feeling sorry for him?"I met Eli's eyes and shook my head. After that, I thought I'd finally get a few peaceful days. Instead, Becca tracked me down. Her nose was red and her eyes were puffy, like she'd been crying. "Fiona, how could you just leave without telling us? We were so worried about you."I didn't want to deal with her. I turned to walk away, but she grabbed my sleeve."Fiona, there's nothing going on between Nolan and me. Nothing happened. You can't just jump to conclusions like that."She sniffled, putting on the most innocent face I'd ever seen. People around us started

I stepped out from behind Eli. "Home? Is that place really still ours?"Snowflakes settled on my lashes. One blink, and they melted into tears at the corners of my eyes."Of course it is, Fiona. We built that place together, piece by piece. Don't you remember?"Of course I remembered. I wasn't the one who had forgotten.I thought back on all the ways Becca had crept into our lives. First it was a pair of pink slippers in the spot where mine used to be, then throw pillows on the couch and a set of sheets picked out just for her. She took up more and more space, and my things got pushed into the corners.I brought it up to Nolan once, quietly. He gave me a look like I was wasting his time."Becca is your best friend. After everything she's done for you, you could wait on her hand and foot and it still wouldn't be enough."He always said the same thing. Becca was his assistant, and her back problems and stomach issues were his fault. I needed to stop keeping score. But he never se

A chill ran through Nolan's entire body. He hadn't gone with me to see the Northern Lights. So who was the man beside me?It was probably a stranger. That was what he told himself. But the dread gnawing at him was almost more than he could take.He called his friend immediately. "Screenshot every one of Fiona's posts and send them to me."His friend was confused, but Nolan's tone left no room for questions, so he sent everything over at once.Nolan swiped through them one by one, his face darkening with every photo. That same figure appeared in all of them. In one, the man was standing just out of frame, tying my scarf back in place after the wind had blown it loose. His friend messaged again, this time with a screenshot of Becca's feed, filled with the wedding photos. Even Nolan could put it together now. And she'd hidden the post from him.He had his friend take a screenshot of the rest of Becca's feed. It wasn't just this one time. She'd been hiding things from him all along.

By the time the Northern Lights faded completely, Nolan and Becca were heading back to the hotel. Only then did Nolan notice that our message thread was still silent."She's probably just mad. Go talk to her when you get back and smooth things over."But when they got to the hotel, no one answered no matter how long he knocked. He started to panic, afraid I'd passed out inside, and called the front desk for help. They told him I'd checked out that afternoon.I'd booked the hotel. After I checked out, their luggage—his and Becca's—was left with the front desk.Nolan scrambled for his phone. Every message bounced back undelivered, and every call went straight to a busy signal. It finally hit him that when I said I wanted to break up, I wasn't joking. He heard footsteps behind him and turned. "Fiona?"He turned and saw Becca. Disappointment flashed across his face."Nolan, this time Fiona's really in the wrong. She just checked out without telling us and left us stranded here."Bu

  • Application Approved: Officially Done with You   Chapter 5

I thought I'd missed my chance at the Northern Lights for good. But during my layover, I ran into Eli Vance. He was the boy I grew up with, and the one I never got over. He moved away with his family years ago and left me with nothing but a necklace shaped like the aurora. In all the years I'd been with Nolan, I tried to put that part of my life behind me.His eyes landed on my pale face, and worry crept into his expression. "Fiona, are you sick?"It was such a simple question, but it broke something open in me. I couldn't stop crying. He pulled me into his arms, his long coat shielding me from the stares of passing strangers, just like he'd done so many times before. There was a secret I'd kept buried for a long time. The Nolan I first fell for reminded me so much of the boy Eli used to be.Once I'd calmed down, Eli asked quietly, "Do you want to come with me to see the Northern Lights in Linden Cove?"My fingertips trembled. I looked up at him, my mind racing. When we were kid
