Marcos and Cameron quickly carry Nathaniel back indoors and into his bedroom, leaving me standing outside awkwardly without knowing what to do.

The woman who had answered the door with him watches them until they disappear into his room before her eyes eventually fall on me.

Raw instinct almost makes me take a step backward because everything about her screams danger, and the part of me that has been briefly exposed to that part of the world recognizes the glaring red signs.

“Do you need me to give you permission to come in? Are you a vampire or something?” She says, tucking something into the back of her jeans. I try not to think too much about what that might be. “Or perhaps, are you mute?”

“What? No—I—” Shaking my head to clear the mental debris, I walk into the apartment, shivering and rubbing my arms. “It’s so cold in here.”

“So, you’re not a vampire or mute, that’s good to know.” She smiles, backing the door. The very image she exudes is that of a predator that has

𝐀𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐚It isn’t very convincing to think that the world doesn’t hate me. Even with the second chance I have gotten after my harrowing experience with my foster family and ex-husband, I’m still getting thrown lemons from different directions. The emotional trauma is never-ending.I nod at the driver who opens the door, looking up at the huge house that is starting to feel less like home unlike when I first moved in. At the end of the day, my mother and father are strangers, guarding secrets and living double lives. My father knows about the underground? He lives that kind of life? The man who dotes on his son and loves his wife so openly it would make a rock jealous— that same man has also taken lives? My brain refuses to believe the information, but he and Nathaniel have been talking about me like I’m a robot without feelings. Like I’m not a woman who can make decisions; what right do they have to dictate my life for me?“Miss Aretha, dinner has been served in the dining room.”

𝐂𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐨𝐧“You know I used to believe that seeing a shrink was the same as accepting that you are insane.”Doctor Theo doesn’t roll her eyes or give me any form of physical reaction, but I smile either way.“I don’t think they call us shrinks anymore and you’re not mentally unstable. If you were, you would be in a mental asylum, but since you’re here, it means I can help you get back on your feet.”Her words are always flat and measured. “Shall we begin today’s session or is there any other thing you want to get off your chest?”“There are a lot of things I want to get off my chest but can I ask you a question first?”“You can, but questions about my personal life are off the table. And please keep the sarcastic questions to a minimum.” One glance at the clock behind me, she continues, “We only have one hour together, let’s try to make some progress today.”“Ouch.” I place a hand over my heart. “There goes half my questions. Anyway, I have never seen you smile, I thought female p

𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐞𝐥I’m not dead, which isn’t at all surprising because everything, even the parts of me I never knew could feel pain, hurts. My body is finding creative ways to introduce me back to the land of the living, like a “fuck you” retaliation for having not tried to kill myself. My head no longer feels heavy and muddled, and aside from the overall heaviness in my body, I feel much lighter. The next step, now, is to open my eyes and face the consequences of my actions.Following that simple step isn’t a walk in the park, however, because my eyelids feel like a thousand bricks. Thankfully, my blinds are closed, which makes it easier to adjust to the low lighting in the room.I hear several voices outside my door, instantly recognizing the loud laughter that belongs to none other than Marcos, who never plays any emotion down. So, Marcos is still here, which means Cameron is here too, and from what I can remember before passing out earlier, Aret—A small movement beside me stops

𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐞𝐥My skin is burning from the inside out, and if that isn’t possible, I'm certain my head is going to split open if I breathe deeply or move too fast.To prove that point, I stretch slowly for the bottle of water mocking me on the bedside table and cry out when a sharp pain strikes behind my eyes, forcing me to squeeze them shut. The air conditioner steadily blows cool breeze on my overheated body, which I appreciate when I am awake. The nights are another story, where the cooled air chases the insistent heat a little too far, and I am left shaking, wishing the heat would ravage my skin again. The distinct sound of my ringing phone breaks through my hazy mind, and like all the times it does, I listen to the sound until the call goes to voicemail, not having the strength to reach that far, scarred by the waves of pain I have had to endure for three days in a row.Another feeble attempt at reaching the bottle and braving the pain ends in defeat when my fingers brush the

𝐀𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐚The sound of the key fitting into the lock and twisting turns my stomach inside out; but I sit still, watching Yemaya’s form fill the doorway, her eyes closed, and a heavy sigh falling off her lips. She kicks her boots off in a distracted manner, and flings the keys into the bowl she glued to the wall because she is always losing her keys. With her eyes still closed, she drags her feet to the open kitchen, leans over the table and buries her fingers into her hair. The moment looks too fragile to interrupt, and I eye the door of the bedroom, ready to flee. It is okay to admit I want to run; but I can’t run from this moment or this woman who needs to hear the truth.Maya jumps when I clear my throat, turning bloodshot eyes my way. “If you’re trying to kill me, do that again.”“I didn’t mean to interrupt. Did you have a bad day?”Yemaya doesn’t respond, causing an uncomfortable silence to descend, her eyes not straying from mine, and I fight hard not to squirm, not used to h
