The Dark

Chapter 2

I watched in horror as Dylan and the girl locked lips right before my eyes. Both humming in content as the sound of their wet touches sucking on each other filled the silent room.

I felt so violated as l watched the scene unfold. Like a scene you’d only see in a movie. Shortly after they separated. And Dylan shot me a dirty and disgusted look before he stood up and walked towards me. Stopping a few inches away from my face.

“Oh Leigh you pathetic little thing. At some point I did love you, l really did”, Dylan said as he raised his hands to cup my face.

“But it was always about you and your stupid dead mother. And all the trauma, for fucks sake Leigh! You wouldn’t even let me touch you. You’re such a selfish bitch you know that?”, Dylan continued in a honeyed voice. Sliding his hands off my face before he took a few steps back away from me.

“I only tolerated you because l pitied you. But then l realized that I can get better, l deserve better Leigh!Better than a paranoid girlfriend who won’t let me touch her, fears the dark like a pathetic little child and spends her time crying over her stupid dead mother. Go get a fucking therapist to help you with your trauma, for fucks sake god knows I’m not one.” Dylan spat in my face.

Suddenly l felt extremely weak. My legs gave out and l collapsed to the floor on my knees as l began to sob uncontrollably.

“Get up!”, Dylan shouted. Pulling me up by my hair.

I screamed and cried in agony as he dragged me by my hair towards the apartment door.

“You disgust me”, he sneered as he hurled me outside.

I continued to cry in pain as I watched Dylan throw out all my clothes in the corridors. Pulling out all my clothes and appliances from the apartment as he kept shouting for me to, “get lost!”.

A small crowd of people had began to gather inside the hallway. As people curiously emerged from their apartments to witness the commotion.

And amongst all the commotion. All l could hear was the sound of the blonde girls shrill and repugnant laughter as l cried bitterly by the door.

I walked silently in the dead of the night. Trying to make my way to the nearest bus stop as l dragged my luggage beside me. I had no where left to go.

Thanks to Dylan, l had moved out of my dorm room with Astrid to live with him. He had promised to pay the apartments rent. So l could focus on paying my college tuition with the money l earned working at his fathers store.

It had been a splendid offer at that time. An offer l was slowly starting to regret. It was dark and l was starting to feel scared. Lately there had been increased cases of young girls being kidnapped in my city. With most of the victims being young girls in their early to mid twenties.

I frantically peered over my shoulders as l rushed down the silent street’s. Eager to get to the nearest bus stop. Occasionally l would hear quiet footsteps that seemed to follow after me. But whenever l turned around there was not a single person in sight.

It became apparent to me that it was my fear of darkness that was playing tricks on me. However that didn’t stop my heart from pounding so rapidly it made my ears drum.

A speeding car splashed me with water from a side puddle off the road. Leaving me completely drenched as l turned a corner.

“Fuck”, l hissed as l felt the cold and icky muddy water on my skin.

“Is everything okay miss?”

I violently snapped my head back at the sound of a voice. Heart pounding heavily in my chest, l stepped back in fear. As l noticed a black car l hadn’t noticed come to a stop. And next to it was a tall figure shrouded in darkness.

“Relax miss. I just want to help”, the voice said. As the tall figure emerged from the dark and into the orange ray of dimming street light.

It was an older looking man, dressed in an immaculate suit and chauffeur hat. And the black car next to him, turned out to be an extravagant looking limousine.

“Now, what is a young lady like you doing out this late at night? Are you aware that it isn’t safe for you to be roaming around this late?”, the man asked.

“Yes, I’m just making my way to the the bus stop”, I explained cautiously. Cautious of any looming danger.

“Well I’m afraid you won’t be catching any bus this late, come let us give you a ride home. It’s not safe for you to be walking around this late, especially with all the kidnappings that have been going on lately”. The man explained.

I felt fearful of the situation l was in. What if this had been the way most girls were abducted. Who in their right mind would get in a strangers car late at night.

However, at that point anything was better than staying out in the dark. Ironically I feared staying in the dark more than l feared getting abducted.

I hesitated a little before l answered. “Ok thank you”, I whispered.

The chauffeur motioned me towards the limo and l opened the back door. Immediately my nostrils were greeted by a waft of rosewood and a hint of minty scent.

“She can’t sit here she reeks of mud and sewer water”, a placid yet deep voice boomed from inside the car.

The voice sending an indescribable tingle down my spine. I bent down to peer at the person who had spoken. But before l could catch a glimpse, the chauffeur closed the door in my face.

“Right this way miss”, he said as he opened the front door for me to sit.
