Trevor’s hand rested lightly on the steering wheel, his eyes fixed on the road. I kept my hands folded in my lap, trying not to stare at him, trying not to notice how his presence filled the car.

“Did you enjoy dinner?” he asked, voice casual, almost teasing.

I swallowed, unsure if I should tell the truth. Did I enjoy it, or did I just survive without completely embarrassing myself? “It was… fine. Very fancy,” I said, my voice tighter than I meant it to be.

He glanced at me, the corner of his mouth lifting in that infuriating smirk. “Fancy is one word for it.”

Fancy? Overwhelming, intimidating, exhausting. Fancy barely covered it. I shifted in my seat, reminding myself not to let him see how much his family’s world made me feel small.

Trevor didn’t comment. He reached over and brushed a strand of hair from my face, gentle enough to make my stomach twist. I turned my face slightly away, cursing the effect he always had on me.

“Hailey left safely?” he asked after a beat, eyes flicking to mine.

“Yes. She insisted on driving herself home. I think she was relieved to escape the billionaire circus,” I said, letting a small laugh escape me.

He chuckled, and the sound made my chest tighten. “She seems… good for you.”

“She is,” I admitted, trying not to let my tone betray how grateful I was. “I don’t know if I’d have survived today without her.”

He nodded, jaw tense. One hand stayed on the wheel, the other resting near the shifter. “I’ll take care of you. That’s my job,” he said quietly. Job. Fiancée. Contract. Those words echoed in my head, and I felt a flicker of irritation.

The drive was mostly quiet after that. I stared out the window, trying to keep my thoughts from wandering, but I couldn’t stop noticing him. The way he handled the car, calm and in control; the way his voice softened when he asked about Hailey; the brief glances he gave me, checking I was okay. I was supposed to resist, remind myself this was business, but a pull inside me refused to listen.

Finally, we reached my building. Trevor parked without a sound, but didn’t turn off the engine immediately.

“You’re here,” he said simply. “Safe. That’s what matters.”

I nodded, fumbling with my seatbelt. Safe. From him, or from myself?

“I’ll walk you up,” he said, opening the door for me. His hand brushed mine ever so slightly. Fire. That’s what I felt every time he touched me. I stepped out quickly, trying to ignore the warmth it left behind.

“Thank you for the evening,” I said, keeping my voice steady.

He raised an eyebrow, smirk tugging at his lips. “The evening was only fine if you survived it. I did my best to keep you from drowning in my family’s world.”

Drowning. That’s exactly what it felt like. I glanced at the steps in front of me, pretending to check them.

“Do you often invite people for dinner?” I asked cautiously, desperate to distract myself from the fluttering in my chest.

He considered me briefly. “With family? Not often. But when it matters, I make exceptions.”

When it matters. That sounded personal, and I immediately shook my head, scolding myself. Stay in control. This is a contract. Nothing else.

“You did well tonight. Better than I expected,” he said quietly.

I blinked, surprised, then quickly masked it with a laugh. “Better than you expected? That’s… reassuring, I think.”

His eyes lingered for a moment. “I always expect the worst from people trying to impress my mother. You passed.”

Passed. Like a test. He makes everything a test, and somehow I was both terrified and relieved.

Then he looked at my building, gray eyes taking in the cramped, slightly run-down exterior. His lips curved just enough to show that familiar arrogance.

“You can’t still be living in this dump, can you?” he said, voice smooth, a slight bite behind it. “What if reporters got hold of it? You’re supposed to be a Reynolds wife.”

I stiffened, gripping my bag tighter. Right. Wake-up call. He is not gentle. He is not sentimental. He is not here to like me. He is exactly who he is.

“I’ll have my movers come by,” he said, amused. “They’ll pack whatever is actually worth anything here.”

I flinched slightly but kept my voice even. “I’ll manage.”

He gave me a brief glance, almost like assessment. “After all, this arrangement is give and take. You need money for your mother’s hospital bills. I need a wife. Everybody wins.”

Everybody wins. Right. I reminded myself this was a business arrangement. Contract. Nothing else. And yet, even with that voice, even with that presence, I couldn’t ignore the flicker of something I wasn’t supposed to feel.

He finally started the engine, the car humming beneath us, and I watched him drive off, leaving me standing in front of my studio apartment. The night air was cold, but the clarity it brought was sharper. He is who he is, and I have to keep my head.

I closed the door behind me and leaned against it, letting the reality settle. Arrogant, morally grey, calculating, not gentle. The only reason he was marrying me—officially, legally, contractually—was because of a slightly bashed car and a balance sheet he wanted to fill.

I chuckled dryly, shaking my head. Survival. Money for my mom. A wife for him. Everyone’s needs met. That’s the cold reality. That’s the truth.

And yet, I couldn’t ignore the pull, the subtle tension, the magnetic, infuriating draw he had. I hated it. I didn’t trust it. I was not supposed to want it.

But here I was, thinking about his smirk, his eyes, the way his hand had barely touched mine.

I sank onto the couch, my fingers brushing the edge of my bag, and tried to steady myself. Contract. Survival. Business. That’s all this is. Nothing else.

Still, I wondered how long I could keep telling myself that before the lines blurred completely. Oh, Alessia. You're done for.

His hand did not let go.Not when I shifted. Not when I tried to put a little space between us.His fingers stayed right where they were, steady around my waist.I looked up at him. That was the mistake.Trevor wasn’t smiling, but something warmer lingered in his eyes—a kind of focus I wasn’t used to seeing on him. It landed on me with enough weight to keep me exactly where I was.The music wrapped around us, slow and soft. Everyone else felt far away, their voices fading into a low blur behind the gentle rise and fall of the song.“Relax,” he murmured, the words brushing close to my ear.I wasn’t tense because I was uncomfortable.I was tense because every small shift of his hand sent heat sparking through me in ways I couldn’t ignore, even if I wanted to.“I am,” I whispered, though my breath betrayed me.His thumb traced a small line near my waist.Barely anything.Yet somehow everything. My heartbeat picked up instantly. He noticed.Of course he did.“You think too much,” he said,

I walked down the aisle slowly, letting the wedding hymn guide each step forward. Petals scattered under my heels, soft against the ground, like the world had dressed itself for something I was not fully ready to believe in. Everyone was standing. Faces turned toward me in a way that made my skin feel warm, like I was being watched from every direction at once. If wishes had weight, I would have folded under mine right there. The beach stretched endlessly on both sides, waves folding into the shore like they were whispering to themselves. The aisle had been carved through sand and flowers, velvety red petals pressed into the ground, antique lanterns swaying above us, glowing against the early evening sky. Painted shells and scattered pebbles lined the path like someone had tried to turn the entire coastline into a memory. Hailey’s mom did that. It was just scenic. It was picturesque. It was too beautiful for something that wasn’t real. How I wanted it to be real anyway. My mother

When I said I wanted to get married, this wasn’t what I had pictured. Cold feet, wedding jitters, all the things people warned me about when I was younger… I used to think they exaggerated. Turns out they were real. Just patient. Waiting for the perfect moment to prove me wrong, and today seemed to be that moment. I was never the girl who believed in fairy tales or those sugary happily-ever-after endings. I didn’t dream about glass slippers or Prince Charmings. Real life taught me early that the world did not work that way, and nothing shattered that lesson more than losing my dad. My father. God, he would have loved today. He talked about it so often—how he would take my hand and place it in my future husband’s like it was the greatest honor of his life, how he would try not to cry as he walked me down the aisle. He had imagined every detail long before I ever cared about weddings. Back then I used to roll my eyes at him, thinking it was all too dreamy, too soft, too unreal. Now

Trevor didn’t look surprised when I walked back into the mansion. Maybe he expected me to come home. Maybe he knew I wouldn’t vanish, not with the media ripping everything apart outside these gates. Or maybe he just understood me in ways I never wanted to admit. He stood at the kitchen island, sleeves rolled up, posture tight like he had been working through a problem for hours. I set my bag down and met his eyes. “I’m not backing out.” For a moment, nothing moved, not his expression, not even the rhythm of his breathing. Then his shoulders eased by just a little, almost too subtle to notice. “All right,” he said. The quiet between us felt familiar in a way I couldn’t ignore. I reached for my bag again, mostly to steady myself, to have something solid to hold on to. Before I could step away, Trevor spoke. “I made arrangements this morning.” I paused. “You already told me that.” He studied me for a moment like he was deciding whether to repeat himself. Then he continue

Hailey was sprawled on the couch in an oversized shirt, hair messy, makeup halfway gone from the night before. A cup of coffee sat on the table in front of her.She looked up and, in a flash, she was in front of me. She didn’t even give me time to take my shoes off before she wrapped me in a hug. A real one. The kind that squeezes your ribs and your brain at the same time.I had informed her over the phone what transpired between Trevor and I. I might have said I was leaving for… good. Her place always smelled like vanilla and wet paint. A strange combination that somehow felt like warmth and crazy and safety. And then there was Dobby, the little furry prince who had decided I was his from the moment he stared up at me with those brown, cosmic eyes.He pawed at my ankle like he was personally offended I’d stayed away longer than usual.“I’m glad you’re here,” Hailey murmured against my shoulder, then gently tugged me toward the lounge.Of course. Immediately I got to Trevor’s house, I rushed into my room, undressing in a hurry. I dashed into the bathroom and cried my eyes out under the hot shower.Satisfied and spent, I turned off the shower knob and grabbed a towel from the rail as I stepped out. I left the bathroom and sauntered toward the walk-in closet.I changed into a pair of PJs. Then I sat in front of the vanity, drying my wet hair.Swollen eyes. Just great.I tied it into a lazy up-do and stayed there for a couple of minutes, lost in thought while twisting my engagement ring. I had picked it the moment the red gems caught my eye.I went back to the room and sat on the bed, replaying everything that happened. My anger resurfaced when the image of Trevor with the blonde popped into my head. How dare he?How could he do that to me? Twice in a row, making me look stupid.I never signed up for any of this. I didn’t want to get married, but I got myself into this mess by wrecking his car.In a very twisted way, he had chang
