Chapter 3

Author: Sweetie Moore
It was a pity that I had seen through her facade.

I ignored her text and finished ordering my food. I took out our couple outfits from the wardrobe and scheduled a pickup service for recycling.

A text from Yves then popped up on my phone screen.

[We’re now taking a trip down memory lane at our old school. You might not know this, but this tree was where Hazel and I shared our first kiss.]

I switched my phone off, turned on my laptop, and submitted the documents for my request to go abroad.

When I received a verification code, another text from Yves popped up, accompanied by a photo.

[We found a confession letter we buried in the sand previously. Hazel wrote that I’m the only man she’ll love in her entire life. Do you see it?]

Such blatant displays of affection continued till the evening.

I didn’t wait for Hazel to return, unlike what I had always done in the past, and went to bed immediately.

After a long while, the lights in the living room were switched on, and Hazel walked in quietly. She asked softly, “Steve, are you asleep?”

I jolted awake and sat upright on the bed. She sat by the bedside and said rather indignantly, “You didn’t stay up to wait for me tonight.

“I was busy at work and came home late. Sorry.”

She apologized sincerely, but I yawned and said with a wave of my hand, “It’s okay. Go to bed.”

Hazel looked rather disappointed that I didn’t seem to care for her explanation. She was about to throw back the covers when she saw something out of the corner of her eye.

“Where is the wedding photo? Why is it not there anymore?”

She paused for a moment before looking around the entire room. She asked doubtfully, “Why does the room feel so empty, as if many things have vanished? Did you do some tidying up?”

“I accidentally smashed something when I was cleaning up. The wedding photo and decorative items are all in the storeroom.”

After my brief explanation, I reached out to switch the lights off. “Go to bed. I’m tired.”

Hazel sensed that something was wrong but couldn’t quite identify what it was.

She hugged me and said tenderly, “Steve, I’ll go with you to check out the wedding venue, okay?”

I rejected her flatly. “I’m busy tomorrow. Perhaps another day.”

I switched the lights off.

Hazel was about to lie down when her phone screen lit up. She hesitated for a few seconds before tucking the sheets in for me and then turning to walk out of the room.

When I woke up the next morning, I saw the breakfast that Hazel had lovingly prepared for me.

Instead of taking a photo to commemorate the special occasion like I would have done in the past, I took two bites and threw the rest in the trash.

I drove to the office to grab some documents. When I arrived at the entrance, I saw a familiar figure surrounded by a few employees who were pointing fingers at him and muttering under their breath.

“Isn’t he the rascal who dumped Hazel back then?”

“Hazel got disfigured from saving him from a car accident, while he left her so mercilessly for fear that he might be held accountable for his actions!”

“Do you call yourself a man, Yves Landon?”

“You shameless coward! The cheek of you to come back!”

Yves bowed his head, his face pale with tears still hanging at the corner of his eyes.

He shook his head and tried to explain his innocence. “No, I had my reasons for doing so back then. Please help me call for Hazel…”

One of the employees pushed him away in disdain. “You’d better scram! If not, we’re calling security!”

Just then, Hazel rushed out and demanded, “Stop! All of you!”

She stood in front of Yves and scolded everyone else there, “Yves isn’t as bad as you make him out to be! Bully him some more, and see if you’ll end up losing your jobs! Get back to work right now!”

Very soon, the crowd dispersed.

Yves called out to Hazel, feeling both indignant and touched at the same time. Hazel’s head snapped toward Yves, and she glared at him, saying, “Are you stupid? Why didn’t you call me before coming over?

“Why didn’t you hide far away from them when they started scolding you? Must you stand here and let them insult you?”

Hazel’s depression worsened, and she refused to talk or eat.She would only listen to my voice. These symptoms were identical to when Yves abandoned her back then, except that the person in question had changed from Yves to me.Yves wanted to do what I did in the past, walking Hazel out of her depression, but Hazel stumbled upon his phone by accident and found out the truth behind her accident, when Yves claimed that he only went abroad because he didn’t know she was disfigured and depressed. As it turned out, when the accident occurred, Yves called his friend and cried for help, “What should I do? Hazel was hit by a car when she tried to save me. I don’t know if she was killed or disfigured—it was all a bloody mess! I can’t afford to compensate her, that’s for sure!“I don’t want to marry someone ugly and disfigured, either!“Quick, help me think of a solution!” Subsequently, Yves fled abroad and disappeared for five years. After those five years, when he heard that Hazel man

Yves’ texts were all accompanied by photos of Hazel taken from his point of view. She peeled prawns for him, brought him to the shopping mall to pick a suit, and accompanied him back to their alma mater for a stroll down memory lane. They even managed to dig up their confession letters to each other. She repeatedly used the excuse of business trips to reclaim the sweet memories of their past with Yves behind my back.As it turned out, I knew what was going on.“Yves, Yves… why did you do that? Why…”Hazel mumbled under her breath and suddenly stood up and rushed out of the cafe.I hurriedly ran after her, worried that something untoward might happen to her. I ended up seeing her fainting on the street, surrounded by people.I had no choice but to send her to the hospital.I called her parents to ask them to bring her back. Her parents treated me as their son-in-law when they saw how I stopped at nothing to save Hazel. When they found out over the phone that I had broken up wi

All that was left in my heart right now was calm indifference.“My name is Cecilia Todd. Hello, Ms. Bale.”Cecilia took the initiative to greet Hazel before turning to me. “Since you have a guest today, let’s meet again another time?”I held her hand. “No need for that.”I turned to Hazel and said flatly, “Just speak if you have something to say.”Cecilia was rather surprised at my sudden move but said nothing as she glanced at Hazel.Hazel’s eyes turned red in an instant. She looked pleadingly at me, “Steve, can we find a place to talk in private?“Please, I’m begging you.”Her voice was thick with emotion as tears welled up in her eyes.I wanted to turn her down, but Hazel burst into tears, drawing the attention of all the passersby.I eventually brought Hazel to a quiet cafe for a chat.Cecilia took the initiative to sit at another table.“Speak.”I looked quietly at Hazel with almost no emotions in my eyes.Hazel looked tenderly at me, almost obsessively.“Steve, I’

Hazel nodded chokingly.“He was outside my room when we were on the phone that day. He saw the marriage certificate, too.”Priscille paused for a long while before saying helplessly, “Any man who hears that would lose his mind.”“What did you do after he found out?“Perhaps there’s room for reconciliation on account of the time you’ve spent with each other?”Hazel thought back on our interactions over the past few days, and her face paled. She had belatedly realized that after that day, I started to quietly abandon her. She, on the other hand, knew that it was wrong of her to see Yves. Reason told her that she couldn’t get herself involved with Yves.Yves had almost taken her life back then. If it weren’t for me, Hazel would have destroyed herself and left this world. However, reason eventually lost out to emotion. Each time Yves pleaded with her, she would tell herself, “I’m only going over to see how he’s doing. I’ll never give in to him!”Yet, she would always end up recal

I was rather surprised. I had the wedding all prepared for her and Yves. What was she doing, trying to find me instead of immersing herself in wedding bliss?I had no intention of being involved with Hazel anymore, but Cherie sounded put on the spot, and I didn’t want to cause her trouble. As such, I told her to give Hazel my new contact number.Hazel stopped pestering Cherie and started bombarding me with calls. After I checked into the hotel, I finally answered one of her calls. Before I could say anything, Hazel questioned me anxiously, “Steve Yates, where exactly did you go?“Why didn’t you come to our wedding?“Do you know how anxious I am? As your girlfriend, I even had to ask others for your contact details!”She had always been a gentle and meek woman before me, and this was her first time displaying such rage.I was somewhat caught off guard, but more than anything, I felt a sense of helplessness and resignation.“Hazel, I’ve made it very clear. Let’s break up.“I’

Back at the wedding venue, Hazel was panicking after I hung up on her.She felt something of utmost importance leaving her. When she tried to call me back with trembling hands, she could only hear the robotic voice telling her that I had switched my phone off.“Steve, what’s going on?”Her voice shook as she repeatedly dialed my number to no avail.Just then, the wedding planner approached her. “Is this Ms. Bale? The wedding is ready, and the ceremony can begin anytime…”“Why is Yves Landon indicated as the groom? I remember telling you very clearly that the groom is Steve Yates!” Hazel questioned the planner agitatedly, her voice trembling. The planner explained, “Oh, that was Mr. Yates’ instruction. Is this Mr. Landon? Your groom’s suit is ready and in the dressing room. Please try it out…”Yves looked rather surprised, but he was secretly delighted at getting his way. He deliberately said with furrowed brows and feigned confusion, “How did things turn out this way?“Hazel, d
