Three weeks into what the household had quietly started calling "the good stretch," the painting studio finally neared completion, and Alex insisted on walking Sophia down to see it before the crew finished for the day.

The morning had started, as most mornings did now, without urgency soft light over the lake, breakfast stretched long past any reasonable hour, Lila teasing him again about how thoroughly he'd apparently forgotten how to rush anywhere. He'd let the teasing land without defending himself. He didn't especially want to defend himself against it anymore. The tension that used to live behind his eyes at every meal had quietly packed up and gone somewhere he no longer felt obligated to chase after it.

"Careful," he said, guiding Sophia over a loose plank near the studio's half-finished threshold. "Still a work site, not a gallery yet."

She laughed, stepping past him into the space, and stopped short at the sight of it. The far wall had gone up entirely in glass now, floor to ceiling, framing the lake exactly the way she'd sketched it on a napkin weeks earlier. Late afternoon light poured across bare concrete waiting for its final floor, and dust motes drifted lazy through the beams like something staged for effect.

"It's exactly what I asked for," she said, turning in a slow circle. "Better, actually. You added the second window."

"You mentioned wanting morning light and afternoon light both, in passing, about a month ago." He came up behind her, arms circling her waist. "I was listening."

"You're always listening. It's unfair, honestly." She leaned back into him, watching the lake through glass that didn't exist yet in her earlier sketches. "I keep waiting for the day this stops feeling like more than I deserve."

"Don't wait for that day." He pressed a kiss to her temple. "Just let it be yours."

They stayed at the site until the crew finally packed up for the evening, walking the empty rooms hand in hand, Sophia narrating where each easel would eventually stand, where she pictured a low bench for reading between sessions, which wall would hold finished canvases once she had enough to justify hanging any. Alex listened to all of it with the same quiet, undivided attention he'd been giving her for weeks now — no phone in his pocket buzzing with northern holdings updates, no old files waiting in the study to pull him back into himself.

Dinner that night stayed on the lower terrace, Giuseppe serving grilled lake fish with the same unhurried pride he'd carried through every meal these past three weeks, Luca recounting an increasingly embellished version of a Milan office mishap that had Lila laughing hard enough to set down her wine glass twice. No one at the table reached for old files or pre-fire irregularities. Alex had made his choice plain weeks ago, and the household had followed it gratefully, relief written into every relaxed shoulder around the table.

"You've gotten soft, cousin," Lila said at one point, not unkindly. "I mean that as a compliment, for the record. I haven't seen you like this since before any of it."

"I know." Alex reached for Sophia's hand under the table, thumb tracing slow circles against her knuckles. "I spent too long chasing shadows that never led anywhere useful. The fire took enough from all of us already. I'm not interested in handing it any more time than it already stole."

Sophia squeezed his hand, her touch warm and entirely present in a way that no longer felt, to him, like something held back behind glass. "Then we keep having days like this. The empire survives without us hovering over every hour of it."

After dinner, they walked the terrace under a sky gone thick with stars, the lake spread out below like something poured from a dark bottle and left to catch the light. Alex pulled her close against the stone railing, kissed her slow and unhurried, and they stayed there a long while simply holding on to each other before finally retreating upstairs.

Their intimacy that night carried the same unforced ease that had settled over the past three weeks entirely — nothing urgent, nothing performed, just the natural rhythm of two people who had chosen, deliberately and repeatedly, to stay present with each other instead of circling old ghosts. Afterward, tangled together in the dark, they talked about nothing important — the studio's final touches, a trip they kept meaning to actually plan instead of just discussing, how thoroughly this villa had become a home again rather than a stage. She rested her head against his chest, and Alex fell asleep with her held loosely in his arms, entirely at peace for what felt, by now, like the first extended stretch of peace he'd had since long before the fire.

The days kept their rhythm after that. Mornings stayed lazy, mostly spent in bed or out on the balcony watching the mist burn off the water. Breakfasts ran long. They took the boat out more often than either of them could probably justify by any reasonable measure, found two new coves neither had bothered exploring before, spent whole afternoons simply reading side by side in the garden without either of them once reaching for a phone. Sophia kept refining her studio sketches, consulting Alex on paint colors he had no real opinion about but offered anyway, just to watch her face light up at being asked.

Luca and Giuseppe traded relieved glances often enough that it had become its own quiet joke between them. Lila's watchfulness, so tightly wound only weeks earlier, had eased into something that finally looked like genuine rest. The whole household had settled into a harmony none of them wanted to disturb by naming it too directly, as if saying it out loud might be the thing that finally broke it.

One afternoon, picnicking by the water on a blanket Giuseppe had packed without needing to be asked twice, Sophia leaned into Alex's shoulder. "This is what I missed most, all those months away. Just this. No empire pressing down on every single hour we're given."

"Then we keep making more days like it." He kissed the top of her head. "The empire survives without us standing guard over every minute of it. We've more than earned this much, at least."

The studio's final walkthrough came a few days later — flooring finished, easels delivered, the reading bench installed exactly where Sophia had pointed weeks earlier and never once changed her mind about. She stood in the finished room for a long moment before finally picking up a brush, Alex watching from the doorway, in no hurry at all to interrupt the first stroke she laid down against a blank canvas in a space built, entirely, around the shape of her own asking.

Giuseppe kept taking visible pride in every meal he prepared. Luca's stories grew more animated by the week, less careful, more like the version of himself he'd apparently been before suspicion had crept into every room. Lila seemed, more each day, simply glad to watch her cousin at ease again. The villa breathed with an easy kind of life that felt, for the first time in a long while, less like something being protected and more like something being genuinely lived in.

Standing on the balcony one evening, the lake mirroring a sky thick with stars, Sophia's arm around his waist, Alex felt lighter than he had in longer than he could easily measure. The tension he'd carried for weeks, the suspicion that had colored even the good moments — gone now, or at least quiet enough not to matter tonight. This, he told himself. Normal days. Small joys. A wife finally settling into the shape of a life instead of just occupying it. This was what he'd fought for after the fire, and for the length of this particular golden stretch, he intended to hold onto every single day of it without asking a single question that might break it open again.

The lake sparkled on beneath them, calm and untroubled on the surface — mirroring back, for now, a peace that both of them had quietly agreed, without ever quite saying so out loud, to simply believe in for as long as it would let them.

Ryan found the match at two in the morning and had the sense not to wake anyone until six. By the time Eve came downstairs, he had it laid out clean across the main screen — the silent partner's name from the Voss acquisition records, side by side with a scanned page from her father's Palermo intake file. Same signature. Same looping, deliberate hand on the E that her father still wrote the same way now, twenty years and one collapsed identity later. "It's an alias," Ryan said, before she'd finished crossing the room. "Not a different man. Same handwriting, same notarization pattern, same shell-company habits your father used everywhere else in his file. He was inside Voss Enterprises eighteen years ago. Before Alex ever took control of the company." Eve stared at the two signatures until they stopped looking like evidence and started looking like her father's hand on a birthday card, on a lease, on the back of a photograph she didn't remember yet. "He never told either of us." "

She told him in the study with the call ended and the door closed and Ryan gone, the tablet on the desk between them. Alex read the name. Looked up at her. The particular stillness that came over him in moments like this — not shock, something colder and more precise, the stillness of a man rapidly revising a structural understanding he'd held for years — settled over his face like weather."He had access to everything I was building," Alex said slowly. "Every acquisition. Every financial structure. Every person who touched the company in that three-year window." He looked at the name again. "And he had access to the program's development from the other direction. And he had a connection to your father that preceded all of it.""He didn't invest in your company," Eve said. "He built a position inside it. While he was building the Board beside it. While he was building the program through it." She held Alex's gaze. "He built the whole architecture, Alex. The Board, the program, the pos

The tight briefing happened at nine with Aria absorbing the routing analysis the way she absorbed everything — fast, with the particular still intensity that meant she was already three decisions ahead and waiting for everyone else to catch up. Every one of the eleven endpoint entities had some connection, however buried, to physical infrastructure — ports, rail lines, a private airfield in northern Spain, two logistics companies, a freight insurance firm, three holding companies with controlling interest in regional utilities across the Eastern Mediterranean."She's not buying leverage over the Board," Aria said, looking at the map Ryan had built. "She's buying the infrastructure the Board depends on to move anything physical.""Ports," Alex said. "Rail. Air access." He looked at Eve. "She's building a stranglehold on their phy

The alert blinked patient and unread on Ryan's third screen long after everyone else had gone to bed.Eve found it at five-forty in the morning. She hadn't slept badly — hadn't slept badly in weeks now, which was its own kind of miracle she still didn't fully trust — but something had pulled her out of the warmth of Alex's arm across her waist and down the dark stairs before she'd fully understood why. Instinct. The particular low-frequency pull of something not yet wrong but not yet right either, like a sound at the edge of hearing she couldn't place from the bedroom. She stood in Ryan's monitoring hub in the grey pre-dawn in bare feet and Alex's shirt, reading the flag on screen three, and felt the night's quiet close in around her.Sophia's authorization signature. Alex read the card in the war room, Ryan looking over his shoulder."The board in Zurich isn't the ceiling. It's the floor." Ryan turned it over, looking for anything on the back. "That's either a genuine tip or Marcus trying to send us chasing something that doesn't exist.""It's both," Eve said. She was at the map, looking at the Board's known hierarchy — the directors, the shell architecture, the funding trails Ryan had spent three weeks pulling apart. "He's not lying. But he's giving us something real at exactly the moment it benefits him for us to look somewhere other than where he actually is.""So we don't chase it," Alex said."We log it. We come back to it after Naples." She put her finger on the map. "Naples is still four days out. The routing hardware is still moving. Marcus sending a night probe and a cryptic card doesn't change the target — it means he's trying to change our focus.""He knows about Naples," Aria said, from the door."He knew about it before we did." The morning was deceptively ordinary.Eve woke first, which rarely happened. Alex slept on his good shoulder, one arm still loosely across her waist in the unconscious, possessive way he had even in sleep, and she lay there for a while doing nothing at all — studying the ceiling, listening to the lake, cataloguing the particular quality of his breathing. Deep. Even. The breathing of a man who'd finally stopped bracing for the next thing, at least for these few hours. She'd spent years not knowing what this felt like. Being still beside someone and wanting to stay.Eventually she eased out from under his arm without waking him, pulled on his shirt from the chair because it was closer than hers, and went downstairs to make coffee the way she'd learned he actually liked it — espresso base, a splash of cold water, nothing sweet. She'd picked it up without meaning to, the same way she'd learned that he read the financial pages before anything else, that he always checked the lake view firs
