The apartment felt smaller than usual that evening, filled with the particular quiet of four people who'd just survived another brush with violence together. Eve sat on the couch, a blanket around her shoulders, while Aria paced near the window, double-checking the new camera feeds Ryan had installed. Mia sat curled in the armchair, sketchpad untouched in her lap. Ryan leaned against the kitchen counter, laptop open and entirely ignored for once.

The latest fragments had shaken Eve worse than the physical attack itself. She'd shared the details earlier, braced for the usual mix of shock and concern. What she got instead was a long, heavy silence, followed by a round of glances between the other three that carried far more weight than any words could have.

Aria finally stopped pacing and sat across from her. "Eve. We need to talk. Properly." She hesitated, which wasn't like her at all. "Those memories you're unlocking — they're not just random trauma leftover from your dad's disappearance. They're part of something bigger. Something all of us were part of."

Eve frowned, pulling the blanket tighter around herself. "What do you mean, all of us?"

Mia set the sketchpad aside, her usual restless energy replaced by a stillness Eve had rarely seen in her. "We remember everything, Evie. The training. The missions. The squad. You were our leader. The one who kept the rest of us alive once everything fell apart after your father vanished."

Ryan finally closed the laptop, rubbing the back of his neck. "I was the hacker. Always was, even before any of this. Digital side of everything — breaching systems, pulling data, covering our tracks after the fact. You'd give the call, and I'd make sure whatever network the target was running fed us exactly what we needed before you ever moved."

Eve stared between the three of them, her mind reeling as the isolated fragments from her dreams suddenly reorganized themselves into something with actual shape. Not scattered memories. Pieces of a team. "You all of you? With me leading?"

Aria's usual hard edges softened into something almost nostalgic. "After your dad disappeared, everything changed overnight. We were just neighborhood kids scraping by, and then someone — someone with real power — saw something in us worth building on. Pulled us into a program. Training way too intense for kids our age, missions no teenager should've ever been anywhere near. You were the best of all of us, Evie. Quiet entry, precise work, clean exit every time. We followed you because you're the one who kept us alive doing it."

Mia leaned forward. "I ran scout and close-quarters — distraction work, infiltration, blades when a gun would've been too loud. You'd send me in first to map a layout or start a diversion. I remember the market job. I was two stalls over, feeding you positions in real time while you handled the actual target."

"And I was always behind a screen, or parked in a van somewhere close." Ryan's voice had gone steadier than Eve had ever heard it. "Cracking the cameras, looping the footage, pulling comms and financials so you always knew exactly where a target was exposed. You were field lead. Calm under fire. Lethal when it actually counted. We ran tight. Efficient. Nobody ever saw us coming."

The revelation settled over the room like something physical. Eve felt relief and disbelief tangling together as the pieces locked into place. She'd led three people — her people, it turned out, long before Italy had ever entered the picture — through operations no child should have been anywhere near: silent kills in hotel rooms, extractions under active fire, tactical exits where one wrong step would have ended everything. Her precision with a gun, a blade, her own two hands hadn't come from nowhere. She'd earned every bit of it alongside the three people sitting in this room with her right now.

"Pieces are coming back," Eve said slowly. "The rooftop extraction in the rain — you were on comms, Ryan, feeding me his location the whole time. Mia, you were the diversion in the market. Aria — you had my back on the exfil, covering the rear the entire way out. We were a team. I led because I couldn't stand the thought of any of you getting hurt on my call."

Aria's smile turned proud and sad at once. "You carried us. Always the leader. We followed because you made us actually believe we could survive any of it. Marcus has no idea what he's actually up against. Not one survivor. All four of us."

The conversation ran late into the night, memory after memory surfacing to fill in the shape of what they'd once been. Aria described a tense operation in a rainy port city, her combat skills buying the squad precious seconds during exfiltration — moving through the downpour, covering Eve's retreat while guards closed the distance, fists and whatever was within reach creating the opening they'd needed. "You gave the signal and I went in hard. We got out clean because you trusted me to hold that line."

Mia talked through slipping between market stalls to plant distractions at exactly the right second. "Marrakech was chaos — spices everywhere, half the market shouting. I tipped a cart at the perfect moment, pulled the guards' attention while you handled the target. Your timing never missed. We were gone with the intel before anyone connected the dots."

Ryan described long nights hacking from the back of an unmarked van, feeding real-time data that turned near-disasters into clean extractions. "The Prague job — the diplomat. I had his whole network mirrored before you even stepped inside. Cameras looped, alarms dead, drive data pulled live while you worked. You walked in, did what needed doing, walked out like you'd never been there. I was sweating through my shirt in that van, but your voice on comms kept me steady the whole time."

More stories followed — a botched job in a rain-soaked port where Ryan's quick rerouting bought them the extra minute they needed; a clean hit in a luxury suite where Mia's diversion handed Eve the perfect shot; a tense exfil through back alleys with sirens closing in while Aria held the rear alone. They talked about the safe houses in between, the quiet debriefs, the small rituals and inside jokes that had kept morale from cracking even in the darkest stretches.

Eve listened, the full weight of their shared history settling over her at last. These were her people — had always been her people, long before any of them knew it consciously. Friends who'd stood beside her through operations that tested every possible limit a person could have. The easy trust that had folded back into place the moment she'd come home from Italy suddenly made complete sense. It had never been new. It had only ever been remembered late.

"We went dark once the program ended," Aria said eventually, quieter now. "Built normal lives on purpose. Art, for you and Mia. Construction and the shop, for me and Ryan. But we kept tabs on each other. Quiet ones. When you got pulled into that whole Voss situation, we figured we might need to step back in eventually. Marcus circling now just confirms it."

Ryan tapped the laptop. "Already running traces on his recent movements. Old habits. Nothing loud — just enough to stay a step ahead of him."

Mia flipped her sketchpad back open, showing rough tactical layouts already sketched out earlier that evening. "We update these for the apartment, and for the art center too. Old protocols. New context."

They kept going deep into the night — mapping safer routes, reviewing the camera feeds again with new eyes, running through contingencies with the easy, practiced efficiency of people who'd once operated as a single unit rather than four separate friends. Laughter broke through more than once — Ryan ribbing himself over his "van days" and outdated gear, Mia teasing Aria about always reaching for her fists before any other option, Aria retelling how Eve's leadership had pulled all of them out of a mission that had gone sideways fast in Istanbul. The ordinary friendship underneath it all stayed exactly intact. It had simply gained a second layer neither of them had needed to name out loud until tonight.

By the time they finally wound down, something in the room had shifted permanently. Ryan kept running background traces on Marcus long after the conversation moved elsewhere. Mia sketched out fresh tactical layouts, refining ideas for the apartment's defenses. Aria disappeared briefly and came back checking over a small collection of old, carefully maintained equipment none of them had ever mentioned owning.

Eve stood out on the balcony later, staring down at the city lights. The dreams had cracked open a past she'd once led three other people straight through the middle of. Now, with her actual squad gathered close instead of scattered fragments in a dream, that past felt less like a wound and more like something reclaimed. She'd led them once already. Whatever came next, they'd face it exactly the same way.

Marcus's attacks, it turned out, had woken up something far more dangerous than one determined survivor working alone.

The whole squad was awake now. And this time, they knew it.

Ryan found the match at two in the morning and had the sense not to wake anyone until six. By the time Eve came downstairs, he had it laid out clean across the main screen — the silent partner's name from the Voss acquisition records, side by side with a scanned page from her father's Palermo intake file. Same signature. Same looping, deliberate hand on the E that her father still wrote the same way now, twenty years and one collapsed identity later. "It's an alias," Ryan said, before she'd finished crossing the room. "Not a different man. Same handwriting, same notarization pattern, same shell-company habits your father used everywhere else in his file. He was inside Voss Enterprises eighteen years ago. Before Alex ever took control of the company." Eve stared at the two signatures until they stopped looking like evidence and started looking like her father's hand on a birthday card, on a lease, on the back of a photograph she didn't remember yet. "He never told either of us." "

She told him in the study with the call ended and the door closed and Ryan gone, the tablet on the desk between them. Alex read the name. Looked up at her. The particular stillness that came over him in moments like this — not shock, something colder and more precise, the stillness of a man rapidly revising a structural understanding he'd held for years — settled over his face like weather."He had access to everything I was building," Alex said slowly. "Every acquisition. Every financial structure. Every person who touched the company in that three-year window." He looked at the name again. "And he had access to the program's development from the other direction. And he had a connection to your father that preceded all of it.""He didn't invest in your company," Eve said. "He built a position inside it. While he was building the Board beside it. While he was building the program through it." She held Alex's gaze. "He built the whole architecture, Alex. The Board, the program, the pos

The tight briefing happened at nine with Aria absorbing the routing analysis the way she absorbed everything — fast, with the particular still intensity that meant she was already three decisions ahead and waiting for everyone else to catch up. Ryan had the eleven corporate registrations pulled by then, and the thread running through all of them, once visible, was impossible to unsee.Infrastructure. Every one of the eleven endpoint entities had some connection, however buried, to physical infrastructure — ports, rail lines, a private airfield in northern Spain, two logistics companies, a freight insurance firm, three holding companies with controlling interest in regional utilities across the Eastern Mediterranean."She's not buying leverage over the Board," Aria said, looking at the map Ryan had built. "She's buying the infrastructure the Board depends on to move anything physical.""Ports," Alex said. "Rail. Air access." He looked at Eve. "She's building a stranglehold on their phy

The alert blinked patient and unread on Ryan's third screen long after everyone else had gone to bed.Eve found it at five-forty in the morning. She hadn't slept badly — hadn't slept badly in weeks now, which was its own kind of miracle she still didn't fully trust — but something had pulled her out of the warmth of Alex's arm across her waist and down the dark stairs before she'd fully understood why. Instinct. The particular low-frequency pull of something not yet wrong but not yet right either, like a sound at the edge of hearing she couldn't place from the bedroom. She stood in Ryan's monitoring hub in the grey pre-dawn in bare feet and Alex's shirt, reading the flag on screen three, and felt the night's quiet close in around her.Sophia's authorization signature. Alex read the card in the war room, Ryan looking over his shoulder."The board in Zurich isn't the ceiling. It's the floor." Ryan turned it over, looking for anything on the back. "That's either a genuine tip or Marcus trying to send us chasing something that doesn't exist.""It's both," Eve said. She was at the map, looking at the Board's known hierarchy — the directors, the shell architecture, the funding trails Ryan had spent three weeks pulling apart. "He's not lying. But he's giving us something real at exactly the moment it benefits him for us to look somewhere other than where he actually is.""So we don't chase it," Alex said."We log it. We come back to it after Naples." She put her finger on the map. "Naples is still four days out. The routing hardware is still moving. Marcus sending a night probe and a cryptic card doesn't change the target — it means he's trying to change our focus.""He knows about Naples," Aria said, from the door."He knew about it before we did." The morning was deceptively ordinary.Eve woke first, which rarely happened. Alex slept on his good shoulder, one arm still loosely across her waist in the unconscious, possessive way he had even in sleep, and she lay there for a while doing nothing at all — studying the ceiling, listening to the lake, cataloguing the particular quality of his breathing. Deep. Even. The breathing of a man who'd finally stopped bracing for the next thing, at least for these few hours. She'd spent years not knowing what this felt like. Being still beside someone and wanting to stay.Eventually she eased out from under his arm without waking him, pulled on his shirt from the chair because it was closer than hers, and went downstairs to make coffee the way she'd learned he actually liked it — espresso base, a splash of cold water, nothing sweet. She'd picked it up without meaning to, the same way she'd learned that he read the financial pages before anything else, that he always checked the lake view firs
