The sound of her own sob echoed off the high vaulted ceilings, unfamiliar and terrifying in a way that frightened her more than any firefight ever had. To Eve, the tears felt like acid dragged across her skin — a physical manifestation of a system failure she'd genuinely believed her conditioning had made impossible. The clinical detachment that had kept her alive through the bloodiest turf wars in Europe, through operations no civilian would have survived hearing about secondhand, was simply gone, burned away in the space of a single revelation, replaced by a chaotic, roaring void she had no protocol for managing.

Across the room, Alex rose from the leather sofa. Without the mask, without the modulated roar that had haunted her for weeks, he looked devastatingly human — and somehow, impossibly, twice as dangerous for it. Firelight caught the sharp angle of his jaw, the blood soaking dark through his ruined shirt a stark, undeniable reminder that even a lord of the Italian underworld could bleed like anyone else. But it was his eyes that kept her pinned to the oak doors behind her — those piercing, unmistakable gold eyes she'd once woken up beside without a single suspicion attached to them.

"Stay back." The words came out choked, her hand dropping on pure reflex to the empty holster at her thigh, fingers finding nothing there and curling into a fist instead.

Her mind spun through a violent, disorienting carousel of everything she'd buried these past weeks. For months her heart had been an active war zone, torn to bloody pieces between two men she'd believed were entirely separate people. There had been Alex Voss — the powerful, civilian billionaire who'd pulled her into his estate, whose quiet, territorial presence had slowly, unwillingly become the closest thing to an anchor she'd had in a world otherwise full of monsters. And there had been Valentino — the ruthless, brutal lord of an Italian syndicate, the masked ghost who challenged her at every turn, occupied her mind at every quiet hour, pushed every limit she had in the dark corners of a life she'd never planned on sharing with anyone.

She had hated herself for the split. Had bled from somewhere internal and unnamed, sick with guilt every time her heart drifted toward one of them, agonizing for weeks over a choice she'd assumed she would eventually be forced to make between them.

And now the universe had delivered the cruelest possible punchline. There had never been a choice at all. There had never been two men to choose between.

"All this time." Her voice fractured as she pressed her spine harder against the heavy oak, trying uselessly to put distance between herself and a truth that had already closed every possible exit. "I was tearing myself apart over nothing real. I thought I was betraying Alex every time I was with Valentino. I thought I was betraying Valentino every time I looked at Alex and felt anything at all. You passed my own heart back and forth between two ghosts you invented, and you let me believe the breaking was entirely my fault."

"Eve, listen to me." Alex took a heavy, deliberate step forward, wincing hard as the motion pulled at his stitched shoulder, gold eyes wide with a rare, undisguised panic bleeding through every careful line of his usual composure. "I didn't play you. Not at first. When you first came to the estate — when you first walked into my life wearing her name — I didn't know. I swear that to you on anything you'd still believe me swearing on. I had no idea you were a substitute. I didn't know the Board had made the switch."

Her breath caught somewhere it had no business catching. She searched his pale, exhausted face for the shape of a lie and found, infuriatingly, none she could point to.

"You didn't know?" The question came out smaller than she intended, jade eyes tracking every inch of his uncovered face like she could will the truth up out of it by sheer force of scrutiny.

"No." His voice dropped into a smooth, rich register that seemed to belong equally to the billionaire and the monster, the line between the two men blurring further with every word. "By the time I understood what they'd actually done — by the time I found the Obsidian Lock buried inside your mind — it was already too late to undo any of it. You were already tangled up in my world by then. I wasn't the one who suppressed your memory, Eve. The Board did that to you. Holding that jamming frequency was the only thing standing between your mind and total collapse."

"Don't touch me!" The scream tore loose as he took another step closer, emotional whiplash finally rendering her completely unmoored from anything resembling control.

She shook her head hard, tears cutting fresh tracks through the dirt and dried blood already streaked across her face. The explanation didn't comfort her the way some smaller, more desperate part of her had apparently hoped it would. It only deepened the agonizing hollow already carved out behind her ribs. He hadn't known at first — fine, she could almost, almost believe that part. But he had found out eventually, and instead of ending the deception the moment he had the chance, he had let it run. Let her fight an entire private civil war inside her own chest over which version of him actually held whatever was left of her soul.

Alex stopped where he stood, hand hanging useless in the space between them, face gone pale as he watched his fierce, unshakeable commander come completely undone in front of him. He'd kept the mask locked in place for months specifically to protect the architecture of secrets his entire empire depended on. Looking now at her tears, at the raw wreckage he'd apparently been the architect of without ever fully meaning to be, he understood that the fire had already consumed both of them equally, whether either one of them had agreed to it or not.

"The frequency." Her voice dropped, jade eyes scanning his face again, hunting for the lie she still half expected to find hiding somewhere in it. "You said you held the frequency. The headaches. The static behind my eyes every single time I got close to the truth. Explain that to me properly."

"It was never a trigger meant to keep you asleep." His gold eyes burned with something that read, infuriatingly, like genuine sincerity. "It was a jammer. The Board built a kill-switch frequency calibrated directly to your neural lock. Every time you started to remember something real, their satellites picked up the spike in your brain activity immediately. I used the Voss estate's private grid to flood your system with a counter-signal strong enough to mask it. I gave you headaches, yes. I know that. But I kept your heart beating while I did it."

Slowly, he reached into his pocket and drew out a small, sleek silver device — a pocket-sized transmitter humming with a low, steady digital pulse.

"They already know Valentino's mask went offline the moment I took it off in front of you." His gaze dropped to the floor between them, unable to hold hers through this particular admission. "The instant I switch this jammer off completely, the Board will know exactly where Commander Viper is standing. They'll activate the final protocol the second they do."

Eve stared at the small silver device, tears finally drying tacky against her cheeks as the cold, familiar weight of tactical reality settled back into her bones where it belonged. The emotional devastation hadn't vanished — she doubted it ever fully would — but the soldier underneath it was already forcing its way back to the surface, reclaiming ground one steadying breath at a time. She was still a weapon, whatever else tonight had cost her. But for the first time in longer than she could measure, she understood that she got to choose who actually pulled the trigger from here on out.

"If you're lying to me." Her voice dropped into something deadly and quiet enough that even Alex went still. "I will find a way through every layer of your empire, Alex. And I will kill you myself. Personally. Slowly, if it comes to that."

He offered her a grim, ghost of a smile, fingers tightening around the transmitter until his knuckles paled. "I'd expect nothing less from my commander."

Ryan found the match at two in the morning and had the sense not to wake anyone until six. By the time Eve came downstairs, he had it laid out clean across the main screen — the silent partner's name from the Voss acquisition records, side by side with a scanned page from her father's Palermo intake file. Same signature. Same looping, deliberate hand on the E that her father still wrote the same way now, twenty years and one collapsed identity later. "It's an alias," Ryan said, before she'd finished crossing the room. "Not a different man. Same handwriting, same notarization pattern, same shell-company habits your father used everywhere else in his file. He was inside Voss Enterprises eighteen years ago. Before Alex ever took control of the company." Eve stared at the two signatures until they stopped looking like evidence and started looking like her father's hand on a birthday card, on a lease, on the back of a photograph she didn't remember yet. "He never told either of us." "

She told him in the study with the call ended and the door closed and Ryan gone, the tablet on the desk between them. Alex read the name. Looked up at her. The particular stillness that came over him in moments like this — not shock, something colder and more precise, the stillness of a man rapidly revising a structural understanding he'd held for years — settled over his face like weather."He had access to everything I was building," Alex said slowly. "Every acquisition. Every financial structure. Every person who touched the company in that three-year window." He looked at the name again. "And he had access to the program's development from the other direction. And he had a connection to your father that preceded all of it.""He didn't invest in your company," Eve said. "He built a position inside it. While he was building the Board beside it. While he was building the program through it." She held Alex's gaze. "He built the whole architecture, Alex. The Board, the program, the pos

The tight briefing happened at nine with Aria absorbing the routing analysis the way she absorbed everything — fast, with the particular still intensity that meant she was already three decisions ahead and waiting for everyone else to catch up. Every one of the eleven endpoint entities had some connection, however buried, to physical infrastructure — ports, rail lines, a private airfield in northern Spain, two logistics companies, a freight insurance firm, three holding companies with controlling interest in regional utilities across the Eastern Mediterranean."She's not buying leverage over the Board," Aria said, looking at the map Ryan had built. "She's buying the infrastructure the Board depends on to move anything physical.""Ports," Alex said. "Rail. Air access." He looked at Eve. "She's building a stranglehold on their phy

The alert blinked patient and unread on Ryan's third screen long after everyone else had gone to bed.Eve found it at five-forty in the morning. She hadn't slept badly — hadn't slept badly in weeks now, which was its own kind of miracle she still didn't fully trust — but something had pulled her out of the warmth of Alex's arm across her waist and down the dark stairs before she'd fully understood why. Instinct. The particular low-frequency pull of something not yet wrong but not yet right either, like a sound at the edge of hearing she couldn't place from the bedroom. She stood in Ryan's monitoring hub in the grey pre-dawn in bare feet and Alex's shirt, reading the flag on screen three, and felt the night's quiet close in around her.Sophia's authorization signature. Alex read the card in the war room, Ryan looking over his shoulder."The board in Zurich isn't the ceiling. It's the floor." Ryan turned it over, looking for anything on the back. "That's either a genuine tip or Marcus trying to send us chasing something that doesn't exist.""It's both," Eve said. She was at the map, looking at the Board's known hierarchy — the directors, the shell architecture, the funding trails Ryan had spent three weeks pulling apart. "He's not lying. But he's giving us something real at exactly the moment it benefits him for us to look somewhere other than where he actually is.""So we don't chase it," Alex said."We log it. We come back to it after Naples." She put her finger on the map. "Naples is still four days out. The routing hardware is still moving. Marcus sending a night probe and a cryptic card doesn't change the target — it means he's trying to change our focus.""He knows about Naples," Aria said, from the door."He knew about it before we did." The morning was deceptively ordinary.Eve woke first, which rarely happened. Alex slept on his good shoulder, one arm still loosely across her waist in the unconscious, possessive way he had even in sleep, and she lay there for a while doing nothing at all — studying the ceiling, listening to the lake, cataloguing the particular quality of his breathing. Deep. Even. The breathing of a man who'd finally stopped bracing for the next thing, at least for these few hours. She'd spent years not knowing what this felt like. Being still beside someone and wanting to stay.Eventually she eased out from under his arm without waking him, pulled on his shirt from the chair because it was closer than hers, and went downstairs to make coffee the way she'd learned he actually liked it — espresso base, a splash of cold water, nothing sweet. She'd picked it up without meaning to, the same way she'd learned that he read the financial pages before anything else, that he always checked the lake view firs
