The room sat bathed in the deep, muted blue of pre-dawn, lit only by the fractured glow of the city skyline filtering through floor-to-ceiling windows several stories above the street below. Somewhere down there, headlights still moved through the rain in slow, indifferent lines — the same shadows in the street that had followed both of them here, in their own separate ways, without either one fully admitting it out loud. The bar, the bourbon, the wet walk through the dark, had all faded into something closer to memory. What remained now was the quiet, heavy stillness of a private room Valentino had brought her to instead of anywhere either of them might have been recognized.

Eve lay on top of the covers, still fully dressed, her bare face pressed against a pillow that smelled faintly of cedar and rain. He'd insisted on the couch across the room, and she'd been too tired and too strung out to argue the point, though some small, sober corner of her mind had noted the restraint anyway, filed it away as one more piece of a puzzle she couldn't yet complete.

She hadn't expected to still be awake this late. The alcohol had mostly burned off by now, leaving behind a sharp, hyper-focused ache instead of the earlier haze. She turned her head slightly, eyes adjusting to the dark.

Valentino sat in an armchair near the window rather than the couch he'd claimed for himself, apparently unable to fully settle either, his broad frame relaxed in posture but his breathing too even to be actual sleep. Even here, in a locked room with no one else watching, he hadn't removed his mask. The dark fabric still covered the upper half of his face, a stubborn, deliberate barrier between whoever he actually was and the rest of the world — including, apparently, her.

A dangerous curiosity flared in her chest, fed by the lingering rawness of the night. She wanted answers. She needed, badly, to know what actually sat behind that fabric.

Moving with the silent precision that came from someplace she still couldn't fully name, she rose from the bed and crossed the room toward him, heart hammering harder than the situation should have called for. She crouched at the edge of the chair, extending two fingers slowly toward the mask's edge near his temple. If she could just hook them underneath and pull, the mystery would finally end. She'd see the man who'd been carrying pieces of her own history around in his pocket for weeks now.

Her fingertips touched the fabric.

Before she could lift it even a fraction, his hand shot out and closed around her wrist with a speed and precision that startled her more than it should have, given everything she'd already watched him do in that alley. It wasn't painful. It was simply, absolutely immovable.

She froze, breath catching, and looked down.

His eyes were open. Wide awake, dark and alert in the shadows, no trace of sleep anywhere in them. He didn't move otherwise, didn't release her wrist. The silence stretched, thick enough to feel, before he finally spoke, voice a low, gravelled rasp that seemed to vibrate through the quiet room.

"Some things are better left unknown, Eve."

The name — her actual name, not the title — landed like something physical. She hadn't told him. Hadn't confirmed it to anyone outside the squad in longer than she could easily remember. Somewhere between the alley and tonight, he'd clearly gone digging deeper than she'd accounted for, connecting Viper to Evelyn Harlow with the same patient precision he apparently brought to everything else.

She tried to pull her wrist back on reflex. His grip held firm, anchoring her hand just above his chest.

"Why," she demanded, voice tight, refusing to let the moment cow her even half-caught as she was. "You tore my mask off in that alley. You know my face. You know I look exactly like Sophia. You have half the pieces of my own puzzle, Valentino, while I'm still drowning in a past I can't even access on my own. Let me see you. That's fair, at minimum."

He held her gaze a long moment, taking in the fierce, exhausted determination still burning behind her eyes despite everything the night had already put her through. Slowly, he guided her trapped hand downward instead, pressing her palm flat against the center of his chest. Beneath her fingers she felt the steady, powerful drum of his heartbeat, faster than his composed stillness would have suggested.

"Seeing a face won't give you the answers you're actually looking for, Viper." His tone shifted, guarded warmth giving way to something heavier. "It'll only add more weight to a load you're already buckling under."

"I can handle weight." Her jaw tightened. "I'm the Ice Queen. I rebuilt my entire squad out of nothing. I can handle a face."

"No," he said softly, his grip finally easing around her wrist, though his fingers lingered against her skin, tracing the line of her pulse like he needed to feel it settle before he'd let the subject go. "Not yet, you can't. The truth isn't a prize waiting for you, Eve. It's a cage. And right now you need to stay free enough to actually survive Marcus first."

He shifted, drawing her down beside him until she was tucked against his side instead of crouched at his feet, one large hand sliding to the back of her head, pressing her cheek to his shoulder in a way that ended the argument more effectively than any further words could have. The familiar scent of him — leather, something underneath it she still couldn't place — wrapped around her like an anchor thrown into whatever storm was still churning behind her ribs.

She let out a long, unsteady breath against his shoulder. She hated the vulnerability of it, hated that he could apparently read her this easily even behind a mask she couldn't get past. But as his fingers moved slow and absent through her hair in the dark, the heavy numbness she'd been fighting all night finally started to pull her under instead of fighting her for it.

She wouldn't get her answers tonight. Somewhere below the window, the street kept its own quiet vigil, rain-slicked and indifferent, shadows shifting under streetlights that had seen a hundred nights exactly like this one and given nothing away either. As she drifted finally toward sleep, safe and entirely unresolved in his arms, she understood one thing clearly enough to carry it into whatever came next.

The game had changed for good. And this time, she wasn't at all sure which one of them had actually moved first.

  • Ashes Of Desire    Chapter sixty three: Fragments and Fire

Marcus paced the length of his dim, high-ceilinged study, heavy velvet curtains drawn tight against the afternoon sun. Three encrypted tablets lay across the desk, each displaying a glowing map of Europe. None of them showed him what he actually wanted to see."Nothing." He growled it to the empty room, slamming his palm flat against the polished wood. He'd pulled every string available to him, leaned on every dirty contact the underworld still owed him, spent a small fortune trying to have Eve permanently erased. His hitmen were among the best in the business — men who left no brass, no blood, no witnesses behind them. And they had walked into an empty nest regardless. She hadn't just evaded the trap. She'd vanished like smoke off a struck match. His knuckles whitened against the edge of the desk. The switch in Italy had been a masterpiece of deception, a delicate house of cards that would eventually hand him and Sophia the whole crown between them. But Eve remained the wild card nei

  • Ashes Of Desire    Chapter sixty two: Eyes on the Lake

Morning sun hit the deep blue water of Lake Como, casting a brilliant, diamond-sharp glare across the stone terrace of the secluded villa. Shielded by sprawling white wisteria and heavy iron gates, Sophia sat alone, and to anyone watching through a long-range lens, she looked like the picture of pure European aristocracy — tailored linen, dark espresso, the particular stillness of a woman who had nowhere urgent to be.Her mind, underneath all of it, ran like a battlefield. Decrypted printouts of financial networks and a physical map of European assets lay spread across the marble tabletop, weighted down against the breeze by nothing more elegant than her own espresso saucer.A sharp, rhythmic buzzing broke the quiet — not from the designer phone resting openly by her cup, but from the hollow lining of a decorative planter a few feet away. She paused, gaze sweeping the empty terrace before she reached into the soil and pulled free a sleek, untraceable burner, an encrypted line reserved

  • Ashes Of Desire    Chapter Sixty-one: Unmasked Moment

Eve walked through the quiet streets near the old warehouse district as evening settled over the city, the sky gone deep orange bleeding into purple, street lamps flickering on one by one like the city was slowly remembering itself. A solid tip had put Valentino back in this stretch of blocks, and her black mask sat tight against her skin, familiar now in a way that unsettled her more than the mask itself ever had. Her suit was sharp, her hair pulled back tight beneath the fabric's edge, and she moved with the particular purpose of a woman who had run out of patience for half-answers.The squad kept their distance without her needing to ask twice. Aria waited two blocks back. Mia monitored from a rooftop with a small drone tucked low against the skyline. Ryan tracked signal traffic from a parked van. She'd told them plainly this confrontation was hers alone. The pull toward Valentino had grown too strong, too persistent, to keep circling politely. She needed real answers this time. No

  • Ashes Of Desire    Chapter Sixty: Quiet Gathering

Valentino spent the morning inside his private estate on the edge of the city — a different estate from Eve's, quiet and well-hidden behind high walls and thick trees, chosen specifically because it sat close enough to the center of things without ever risking overlap with anything she might recognize. He moved through the rooms without his mask, without the cap, face bare only within these walls. No one else was permitted inside except Dario, the one man he trusted enough to let see him unguarded. He drank coffee at the large wooden table near the window, the morning light doing something good for him that he rarely let himself notice out loud. Dario had left a stack of papers — small reports on money trails and old contacts, nothing dramatic, just the patient accumulation that actually won this kind of game. Valentino made notes in a plain notebook as he read. Gathering information was simply his daily work now. Slow. Careful. The only kind of work that ever actually held up under p

  • Ashes Of Desire    Chapter Fifty-Nine: Return to Ice

Eve decided it was time to go home. New York had given her pieces — more than she'd expected, and fewer than she needed — but the real fight waited back where her squad, her company, and the quiet remains of her ordinary life were all still holding steady without her. She packed her small bag in the hotel room early the next morning, the black mask staying on the entire time, soft fabric fitted snug over everything but her eyes. She checked herself once in the mirror before leaving. Eyes sharp. Everything else hidden. The mask had become her armor after the park, after his hands, after the particular way he'd made her feel exposed without ever once seeing her face. It kept Valentino from reading her. It kept everyone from reading her, which, this morning, felt like exactly the point. The car ride to the airport drew a few stares — a woman in a tailored black suit and a full face mask tended to do that — but no one asked questions, and security passed her through with barely a second l

Eve paced the master bedroom, the thick carpet swallowing her footsteps. The storm had finally blown past, but it left behind a heavy, unnatural silence pressing in on the windows.
