Chapter 2

작가: Fierce Sleeping Dog
The moment I stepped past the estate gates, the phone in my pocket started buzzing violently.

My mother was calling.

The second I answered, Gordon's furious roar exploded through the speaker.

"You little bastard. You think you can just walk away?

"You think you can get away from us?

"You'll be at the banquet at the Regency House Hotel tonight if I have to drag you there myself, and you'll wait on Gloria Dane.

"If you don't, I'll take your grandfather's ashes out of the family chapel and pour them down a sewer."

At the word grandfather, my steps stopped.

It felt as though an invisible hand had closed around my heart, and murderous fury rose behind my eyes.

When I was fifteen, the Blackwells finally brought me back from the countryside.

My mother hated my accent and the smell of my secondhand clothes.

She thought I embarrassed her and could barely stand to look at me.

Damian wore expensive suits and had the staff call me a street beggar and a fraud.

Inside that frozen house, I lived like something that didn't belong.

Only Grandfather, Everett Blackwell, treated me any differently.

He came to the corner where I'd curled into myself, leaning hard on his cane.

With rough, callused hands, he gently wiped the dirt off my face.

When no one was watching, he pressed a piece of vanilla taffy into my palm.

"Don't be afraid, Leander. This is your home. Grandfather will look after you."

That sweetness was the only warmth I ever tasted in the Blackwell house.

Everett was the only person there who treated me like his grandson.

After he died, the estate became a real prison.

My mother put Damian above everyone else.

They moved me into a dark, damp basement room.

Then, because of the shares Grandfather left me, they swallowed Damian's lies and sent me to the most violent mining district in Kembala.

I'd thought they were only biased, only obsessed with status.

I'd never imagined they could sink this low.

They were threatening their own son with his grandfather's ashes to force him into a marriage he'd never consented to, for money.

"Gordon Blackwell."

My fingers tightened around the phone until my knuckles went white. My voice came out colder than winter.

"If you touch Grandfather's urn, I promise you the Blackwell name won't survive what comes next."

Damian's sharp laugh came through the phone.

"Why are you pretending to be dangerous?

"The old man's urn is under my shoe right now.

"Eight o'clock. Regency House.

"For every minute you're late, I'll spit in it."

The line went dead.

They'd hung up on me with perfect arrogance.

I stood on the sidewalk and slowly raised my head.

Something violent seemed to radiate off me, chilling the air.

Good.

Very good.

I'd only meant to bankrupt them and leave them with nothing.

Now they'd given up any claim to mercy.

  • Ashes and Obsidian   Chapter 10

Three years later, in the hottest and most remote penal mine in Kembala, the temperature climbed past a hundred and twenty degrees.Damian's face was covered in infected sores, and nearly all his hair had fallen out.Heavy shackles hung off his ankles. With bleeding hands and no fingernails left, he clawed at the rock.Nearby, Gordon and my mother had gone skeletal and looked thirty years older. The overseer's barbed whip tore across their backs. The wounds opened again and again. At mealtime, the other prisoners got spoiled bread.Their bowls held mostly stone dust and foul mud.The Sovereign's standing order denied them anything better. They crouched in the dirt, crying as they forced it down. The grit cut their throats, and blood came up with every swallow.A giant outdoor screen stood at the center of the compound. It was carrying a live global broadcast.Helena and I were getting married.I wore a one-of-a-kind suit and the ceremonial insignia of Obsidian Crown's hi

  • Ashes and Obsidian   Chapter 9

Damian's shouting cut off in the middle of a word.A choking sound came out of his throat.Gordon and my mother stared with their mouths hanging open.Their minds had simply stopped."The... Sovereign?"Damian shook his head violently."Impossible. That's impossible."He's nobody. He dug ore in Kembala."Cassandra, shoot him. It's a trick, they're all in on it."Cassandra was staring straight at me.She didn't fire. She'd seen the black obsidian insignia I'd set down on the table. In her world, that mark was a death sentence.Cassandra's arrogant eyes went wide.Red veins spread across them.Sweat soaked through her fur coat. While the Blackwells looked to her with desperate hope, Cassandra's knees gave out.Crash.They hit the marble with a sickening impact. The handgun slipped out of her hand. She crawled forward and started driving her forehead into the floor.Bang. Bang. Bang.Broken glass opened her skin, and blood ran down her face. She didn't seem to feel

  • Ashes and Obsidian   Chapter 8

Helena stood on the stage with a face like a coming storm.Instinct made her glance up toward the private gallery.Without my word, she wouldn't move. She forced her fury down and spoke through her teeth."Enough."To the Blackwells, her restraint looked like fear.Damian laughed even louder."What's the matter, Ms. Drake? Frightened?"It's a little late for that."He wound both arms around Cassandra's neck and pitched his voice into a whine."Cassandra, I don't want to look at her anymore."Make her kneel down and apologize to me."And that so-called Sovereign is just a man hiding behind a title."When he shows his face, make him hand me Obsidian Crown's North American division."Cassandra laughed and caught Damian by the chin."My beautiful boy's right."To hell with the Sovereign."He's nothing to me."If he stays hidden, fine. If he shows up, I'll put him down too."Cassandra raised a handgun and pressed the muzzle to Helena's forehead."Three seconds, Drake."

  • Ashes and Obsidian   Chapter 7

I raised a hand and stopped Helena."Leave them."Killing them now would be letting them off easy."Watching Helena obey me without a second's hesitation only convinced Damian he was right. He'd decided I was nothing but a pretty thing who'd gotten a powerful woman's head turned.Damian lifted his chin and looked at me with naked hatred."You're a hired hand, Ms. Drake. Obsidian Crown's errand girl."Do you really think you can shield him from everyone?"I've already got Cassandra Rourke behind me, the biggest name in the capital's underworld."At the name Cassandra Rourke, the faces around us changed. She ran organized crime in the capital, and nobody needed a title to tell them so.Damian turned to me in triumph."Just you wait, Leander."In three days, Obsidian Crown is throwing a reception for that mysterious Sovereign of theirs."Cassandra's coming in person."And I'll show the Sovereign exactly what you are."Damian swept out of the ballroom with Gordon and my mot

  • Ashes and Obsidian   Chapter 6

I watched the clowns trip over each other and said nothing.I was carefully lifting the ash out of the broken glass, gathering it against my chest a handful at a time.Helena looked at what I was holding. Then she saw the blood running off my fingertips. Her eyes went red, and a vein stood out across her forehead. She turned on Gloria and the Blackwells with fury burning through her face.Damian still didn't understand what he was standing next to."Ms. Drake, forget the lunatic. Let's go talk about the investment in the private lounge."Helena didn't answer him.She crossed the ballroom and came straight to me.Every guest watched in horror, expecting me to be arrested or shot.Instead, the woman who ran Obsidian Crown's North American empire went down with a heavy crack. Both knees hit the glass-strewn marble. The glass cut through her trousers, and blood soaked into the fabric. She didn't seem to feel it. Her voice shook with rage and grief."I got here too late. You

  • Ashes and Obsidian   Chapter 5

No one in the ballroom made a sound. The loose flesh of Gloria's face started to tremble. In the ruined lighting, she stared hard at Helena Drake. Then recognition lit her eyes with sudden excitement. The woman in front of her ran Obsidian Crown's North American division, someone even Foxbridge's wealthiest families couldn't get a meeting with.Helena Drake herself.Gloria forgot all about the wine on her face. She hurried forward with the eagerness of a dog expecting a treat."Ms. Drake."What an extraordinary surprise."You should have told me you were coming. I'd have met you at the door myself."She put out a hand covered in age spots.Helena ignored it and looked past her, at the ash on the floor and the blood coating my hands. The fury coming off her was almost physical.Gloria misread the look and assumed Helena was offended by the mess. She spun around and pointed at me."Please don't be angry."This animal just got back from a mine in Kembala."He threw wine
