Keeping her eyes on him, she watched him as he seemed to go back in time. He looked lost in his thoughts and she; for a moment, wondered what he was thinking about.

Was he feeling regret for the way he had taken advantage of her memory lapse?

Was he feeling sorry for abusing her and trying to turn her into someone he wanted?

Paul suddenly smiled remorsefully. “I thought you could be her. Take her place and fill the hole in my heart.”

“Ease your guilt you mean.” Ashley said plainly. Her words, unkind and cruel.

Paul peeled his melancholic eyes to her. “You hate me, don't you?”

“Not exactly, but that doesn't mean I like you either.” Ashley eyed him.

“That's understandable.” He told her. “I wasn't good to you.”

Her eyes trailed the length of him, wondering why the sudden change. Why the sudden expression of guilt and redemption.

Not outrightly, but he was in a way apologizing to her. Expressing his regret over his past actions.

Was this another attempt to manipulate her?

Rachel walked tiredly. She felt confined to a box labelled exhaustion. Her long dark hair which she had taken extra effort to groom, thinking she was finally going to conquer her enemy, laid like an old overused mop on top of her head. The makeup on her face was a shadow of what it once was. But Rachel didn’t care. She didn’t care about any of that. Her mind was greatly disturbed and she had regretted going to her mom to seek comfort. It was a bad decision that she had made in the spur of her frantic state. She remembered how she froze when her mother asked the reason for her fears, looking at her as though she was crazy.“I’m not crazy, mom, don't look at me like that.” She recalled her response to her mother when her mother thought she was speaking crazy things.“Then why are you behaving like you are?... Look at you." Mrs Leon’s hand waved over Rachel's form. “You waltz in here looking like you were attack by robbers only for you to say Lillian is alive and that Ashley, of all peo

What Rachel had heard paralyzed her. She didn't wait. She didn't need to. She ran; ran out of Ashley's office as though it was a building on fire and she was trying to save herself. A burning building with thick, dark sooth burning her lungs and suffocating her. Rachel's heart was in her mouth. Her mind was a mess. The hairs in her skin stood on end. She rushed out of the office building and gasped for air, inhaling sharply, gulping air as though it was her last. But even the air outside stung. The cold rasp air burned her lungs. She felt dizzy. She needed to breathe and she was, but it just wasn't working. The air just wasn't enough. She felt no sense of calm to her burning soul. She held onto the walls for support. Bent over and clutching her chest, she heaved, wishing it didn't hurt so much to breathe. “Are you alright?” A concerned passerby inquired. “Do you need to go to a hospital?” Her voice lost, Rachel shook her negative response and waved the stranger off. Reluctant

“Did you tell him you were here?” Pamela asked, clearing the table of any sensitive documents laying in sight. “No.” Ashley responded, rounding the table to settle into her chair. Pamela had just tucked in the last of the papers, when the door peeled open to reveal the feminine figure. “You!” The sheer surprise in Ashley's voice was obvious. A triumphant smirk lifted the corner of Rachel's lips. For once she had evoked a reaction from Ashley. “Yes. Me.” Rachel replied with a taunting smile. “But-” Pamela tried to protest. “I figured you might not agree to see me if you knew it was me.” Rachel answered their question, strolling into the office and occupying the guest seat even before she was told to. “But I know you'd readily see my husband at any time.” Ashley flashed her brows. Rachel did have a point. She could have expected to see Rachel anywhere else but her office. This visit had taken her by surprise and she would have easily dismissed Rachel without seeing her. It was

“Helen?” Pamela repeated after Ashley, wondering why the sudden charge in her voice. Ashley recalled how Paul was just about to answer her question when Helen arrived and called him. Helen apologized for interrupting, saying she had thought that Paul was talking to himself again. Ashley and Paul raised themselves from the floor. The atmosphere turned awkward and Ashley excused herself to her room. She didn't think anything of it until now. At that time, it had seemed like a natural interruption with no hidden meaning. But thinking back now, Helen's behavior since after that day has been questionable. “Ashley, are you okay?” Pamela touched her. Ashley's mind came back to the room. She shook her and smiled at Pamela. “Yeah, I'm fine. Just really worried for dad.” “He’ll be fine. I'm sure Dr Tony is doing his best… What were you going to say about Helen?” Ashley looked at Pamela with uncertain eyes. She wasn't sure if she should share her thoughts with Pamela just yet. All she

Pamela quietly entered Ashley's office, a stack of files on her hand to add to the others she had been piling. Sensitive documents she couldn't sign on Ashley's behalf. So she kept them until Ashley would return. It has been exactly one week since Ashley came to the office. Mr Knox was still confined at the hospital. Pamela understood that Ashley needed to be away for sometime. With the files in her hands, Pamela struggled to shut the door behind her. Finally succeeding at the seemingly herculean task, she started into the office. “Holy shít!” She yelled and the files went up into the air. “The fúck!” She cussed. Ashley stared at her blankly. “What's with you?” “Really? You almost gave me a heart attack!” Pamela shot at her. “I didn't expect to find you here.” “This is my office. Need I remind you?” “The office you haven't been to in a week. I didn't think you'd be coming in today.” “Fair point. I'm sorry.” Ashley apologized. “That's more like it.” Pamela said as she bent to p

Ashley felt him still under her touch. It was though he hadn't realized he was crying in front of her. Then he softened as he heard her apology. He sniffed. She fished her handkerchief from her purse and handed it to him. Her knee was beginning to ache from squatting for a long time. She slid to the floor and sat down beside him, still holding the handkerchief out to him. He accepted it and wiped his nose with the fabric. “You're not at fault.” His voice was a muffled sound as he spoke under the handkerchief. “My life was ruined from the beginning… Did you know-” Ashley swore under her breath as her phone blared. She didn't glance at the caller before swiping left to reject the call. Quickly, she set the phone on silent mode. She fixed her gaze back on him, hoping the interruption had not stopped him completely. She wanted to know what he had to say. “Did I know what?” She pushed when the silence stretched. He chuckled. A strange bitter sound. “I was never supposed to live

Ashley went home by herself. Guilt ate her up. She blamed herself and some of DJ. If she hadn't been holed up with him, she'd probably have been here for Mr Knox. He probably wouldn't have fallen. Wouldn't have been in the hospital fighting for his life. She was almost certain of this. She entered the house exhausted from her emotions. The house didn't make any of it better. Images of Mr Knox were everywhere. She stood at the foot of the stairs imagining him in the room. It was all too soon feeling like an old memory. “Welcome ma'am.” Someone greeted her. Ashley's distant mind returned to the room and she noticed the shaken maid standing close. “Hmm. I won't be having anything.” Ashley told her, assuming she had come to ask about dinner. The maid nodded just before her small voice filtered through the air. “Ma'am, how is sir doing?” The teary strain in her voice could hardly be missed. That's when it occurred to Ashley. She must have been the one that found her father. “Where
