Chapter 2

作者: Fifteen
"Don't be mad at Jake, Cassie." Erica quickly came forward in a childlike manner to hold my hand, and she stuck her tongue out in a cutesy way to apologize.

"He lost to me in a game of rock, paper, scissors, which was why he promised to drink my wine. Why don't you have a round with me, and I'll let Jake drink your wine if you win?"

Jake's expression softened as he looked at Erica dotingly. "That sounds great. You should play a round with Erica, and I'll drink your wine if you win."

His voice was not loud, but it was enough for everyone around to hear what he said. I closed my eyes, feeling a little frustrated. "I quit."

A look of delight flashed in Erica's eyes. She cleared her throat and said, "Then that counts as my victory. That means I should be given a prize, right? My mom told me that after drinking the wine, we have to pray for a child at the church."

Many people present inhaled sharply. This was a tradition of the town. After drinking the marriage wine, any new couple who visited the church in the mountains that very night or the next morning would get a child if they were truly in love. They would also be blessed to grow old together.

This had been my plan as I thought what I had with Jake was true love.

I looked up to meet Jake's eyes. He knew of this tradition, and he was aware of how much I wanted to live the rest of my life with him in happiness, which made me wonder about the choice he would make.

"All right."

It felt like something died inside me, and the last of my pain felt numbed.

Jake only thought about me after he agreed to Erica's request. He quickly held my hand to cajole me. "You admitted defeat, didn't you? That means you lost me to Erica. Be good, and stop crying. Go home and wait for me."

Nina wanted to yell at them, but I stopped her with a look. After that, I said calmly, "All right. You should go."

Everyone was taken aback by my reply.

Erica's eyes lit up as she said, "Let's go to the church tonight. The lights are up, and it would count for even more blessings if we prayed for love and a baby."

Everyone around started hooting.

Jake looked at me worriedly, but he could not help smiling when he saw the smile on Erica's face. "All right. I'll do anything you want."

Halfway through the celebration that night, a group of people escorted Jake and Erica up the mountains with flashlights. I did not follow them, but stood next to the fire pit as I watched them walk into the distance.

It got later at night, and my friends kept sharing photos online, which consisted of Jake and Erica praying sincerely in the church. They had red strings tied around their wrists by the town leaders, symbolizing having children and growing old together.

Every picture felt like a knife to my heart.

Nina wanted to call Jake several times, but I stopped her. Once most people had left and there were not many by the fire pit, Nina started to sigh. "Did he forget that it's your birthday today?"

I stopped in my tracks. She was right. Today was my birthday. Jake would always take time to spend it with me every year, no matter how busy he was. He told me that I was born during the peach blossom season, which made it easy for him to remember my birthday.

Jake had told me this seriously, and I believed him, but this year, he drank someone else's marriage wine during the day and went with another woman to pray at the church for a baby. He had completely forgotten about my birthday.

When Jake pushed the door open and entered the house, he was reeking of alcohol and holding a box in his hand. He looked relieved to see me sitting by the window, and he came toward me. "Why haven't you gone to sleep? I almost forgot about this. This is for you."

Jake placed the box on the table as he spoke. Every time something similar to this happened, he would make it up by buying me a present, thinking that we could return to how we were, but I did not open the box.

It was because I caught a scent on him. Besides reeking of alcohol, there was the sweet smell of lotion. It was a brand I did not use. I looked up at him and, under the light, caught sight of a red mark under his collar that he did not manage to hide well.

Jake followed my gaze and lowered his eyes to look before casually explaining, "Those people who came up with us to the mountains were pretty wild. I scratched myself during one of their crazy antics. It's not what you think."

He explained very quickly, but I said nothing. Jake frowned. "Are you still feeling mad about what happened during the day and tonight? I didn't want to cause a fuss when so many people were watching us during the celebration.

"Birthdays can be celebrated every year, and it's the same if we celebrate it a little later."

The last of my hopes for him vanished at that last sentence. I pushed the box back to him. "You don't need to make anything up to me."

Jake was taken aback. "What?"

I looked up at him. "You don't need to make anything up to me with presents. You don't need to celebrate my birthday anymore, and you don't need to drink my marriage wine. I'm tired, Jake."

Jake was initially surprised, but he laughed after that. "Are you doing this again, Cassie? We have another gathering tomorrow. You shouldn't be throwing a tantrum at a time like this."

I shook my head. "I'm not throwing a tantrum. I just don't want to be doing this any longer."

Jake looked at me, and the smile on his face slowly vanished. He immediately turned his back on me and said, "Everything will blow over once you stop being angry. Come home with me tomorrow. My parents want to see you."

  • Ask Not the Wine of Lost Years   Chapter 10

My wedding date got closer, and my family and the Peytons became even busier. As for Jake, he seemed to be stuck in the same place. He no longer tried to stop me and no longer created any commotion outside my family home, but he did seem to go into decline as days passed by.It was only later that I found out that he kept thinking about the past during this time. He had gotten so used to life with me that he had taken it for granted. Now that I had suddenly vanished from his life, he finally realized just how big a hole I had left behind in his life.Jake's mother was finally silenced as well. She knew how much I had suffered all those years I was with Jake, and knew how much financial responsibility I had shouldered for Jake and his family. After I was gone, she started to realize what was missing from her home. However, it was too late for regrets now that things had turned out this way. The night before the wedding, the entire town made last preparations for the big day. Crates

  • Ask Not the Wine of Lost Years   Chapter 9

The first time I met Jake alone again was two weeks before the wedding. I was going through the list of things I had to prepare for the wedding with Nina that day, looking at clothes, candies, and thank-you cards. There was a lot to do, but I felt good and even looked forward to the day."Cassie."When I heard the voice, I looked up and saw Jake. He had lost weight, and he looked much more haggard than before. Jake came up to me and stopped me from leaving. "Can we talk?"I looked at him. "Go on."Jake was surprised as he did not expect me to be so calm, but he still told me everything he wanted to say. "I've cut ties with Erica. I won't have anything to do with her from now on. Please give me another chance, Cassie. I promise I'll do whatever you tell me to."I listened to him quietly before asking, "Why should I?"Jake was not prepared for that reply. I looked at him and continued calmly, "Why should I wait for you to come back to me just because you've apologized after pushi

My family started to prepare for my wedding after I was officially engaged. As for Jake, his efforts to reach me were futile. He started by trying to find information about my whereabouts, even waiting outside my family home more than once to try to see me, but he was denied the opportunity. However, he refused to give up and tried asking for Nina's help instead. Unfortunately for him, Nina only felt disgust for him. She would either kick him out or throw sarcastic words at him. She refused to pass any of his messages to me.The more Jake failed in his attempts to reach out to me, the more he started to reminisce about the days we were together. The first few years after leaving our hometown, we rented a basement as it was the cheapest accommodation we could find. It was humid during summer, and freezing during winter. I was worried about his gastritis and would always make sure that he was properly covered with the only thick blanket we had.Jake remembered how I went everywher

The moment my mother said that, my elders indicated that the engagement ceremony should continue. Cole presented the gifts he brought in front of everyone and said solemnly, "I can't make up for everything Cassie has gone through in the past, but if she is willing, I will do everything I can to make her life better. I don't care about anything, but if Cassie is willing to spend the rest of her life with me."Jake finally lost control as he tried to rush into the house, but the people by the door stopped him. He could only shout my name repeatedly over the crowd in front of him, "Cassie! Cassie!"I turned back to look at him. There was no grievance or hate in my eyes but a clear distinction of us being strangers from now on. After that, I turned away to continue with the engagement ceremony. It was only then that Jake finally understood that this was not a ploy of mine to force him into marriage, but I really did not want him anymore. He could only watch from outside the house as h

Jake was stunned to find out about this. I had kept that wine for 28 years and refused to let anyone touch it. He knew better than anyone else what that meant. Nina looked at him and said slowly, "She trusted the wrong person once with something she truly cherished. It won't happen a second time."With that, she turned and walked back into the house without giving Jake another chance. That afternoon, Erica came to see Jake again. She brought along medicine and some food, then continued with her gentle, obedient act as she asked if Jake was troubled over what had happened with me.Jake would have drunk it all in if this were before, but Erica's appearance only reminded him of the vat of wine in the day, the church at night, and how they crossed the line in that room. When Erica noticed something different in his reaction, she said softly, "If you really can't let Cassie go, I don't mind taking a step back. I just don't want everybody to end up in an unhappy situation."That was

  • Ask Not the Wine of Lost Years   Chapter 5

The car came for me at dawn. The mountain roads were still damp from the night before. When I placed my luggage in the car, I took one last glance at the house I had lived in for years before climbing into the car. When I got home, my mother pushed a bowl of soup toward me. "You should have something to eat."I lowered my head to take a few sips, and the anger inside me eventually subsided a little. My family did not ask me about what happened the night before. All they did was glance at my luggage and my exhausted face, and they understood everything. My uncle was seated at the side, saying in a steady voice. "Don't worry about what happens next. We'll take care of it."I nodded as tears started to fill my eyes, but I held back from crying.…Meanwhile, Jake went home at noon. Erica had deleted the text before he could read it.Jake returned to a half-empty house. All of my things were gone, and only the broken pieces of the wine vat and the faint scent of wine washed away by t
