Chapter 2

Auteur: Bowl of Rice
The man on the other end of the line paused, then laughed with even more amusement. His voice carried undisguised interest and provocation.

"Give me your address. I'll come pick you up."

The next morning, Kieran glanced at the empty seat beside him and spoke to the housekeeper.

"Wynnie, tell her to come down for breakfast."

Wynnie Marks lifted her slightly bowed head, looking confused.

"Mrs. Chase left early this morning. She took her suitcase with her."

Kieran's hand froze mid-air, spoon suspended. "She left?"

"Kieran, maybe you should just send me back. Joanna must be angry, that's why she..."

Kieran cut off Leona with a cold expression.

"She's thrown tantrums and run away from home before. After a few days cooling off outside, she'll come back.

"Don't worry about her. Just eat your breakfast."

As he finished speaking, Kieran pushed a cup of warm milk toward Leona. She lowered her head and took a couple sips, her face full of contentment.

Kieran picked up his spoon again, preparing to continue eating. But unbidden images kept flashing through his mind.

My face from yesterday, pale to the point of transparency. My cold and decisive words. That divorce agreement sitting on the coffee table.

"Tch." Kieran made a barely audible sound. His appetite vanished instantly.

He stood up, his movements were slightly more abrupt than usual.

"Clear it away and have the car ready. I'm going to the office."

Meanwhile, having barely left the hospital, I found myself being rushed back by Maverick Tiller. My condition had been too poor. Forcing myself to check out early backfired when I burned with fever until I lost consciousness in his car.

Half dreaming, half awake, I vaguely felt someone massaging the bruises on my right hand.

"A car accident? What do you mean they issued three critical condition notices? Are these the aftereffects?”

"The abdominal wound is infected. I'll step out and have the nurse prioritize the antibiotics and dressing change.”

"Turn the air conditioning up higher. Where's the IV warmer?”

I fought to open my eyes and caught only a glimpse of anxious ones staring back at me.

"Joanna?”

"I'm here. Keep sleeping. You'll feel better when you wake up."

He took my cold right hand in his. Warmth spread from his palm. I was too feverish to recognize who he was anymore.

I only thought his hand felt so warm.

Beep beep beep.

This was the eighth call Kieran had made. Still no answer.

In the past when I threw tantrums, it never took more than two or three calls. Kieran never even had to say a kind word before I came running back eagerly.

"Scott, go check..."

Before Kieran could finish, someone from the secretary's office knocked, bringing in a visitor.

"Mr. Chase, Mr. Wells over here insists on seeing you. He says... he's here on behalf of your wife."

James Wells adjusted his glasses and introduced himself.

"Mr. Chase, I've been retained by Ms. Joanna Candor. I'm here to discuss the divorce proceedings."

Kieran froze for two seconds. He let out a derisive laugh, a smile crossing his face as if to say "of course."

"Mr. Wells, is this another one of Joanna's new tricks? Where is she?

"I'm very busy. I don't have time to play along with her running away from home games. Have her move back as soon as possible.

"Leona's personality is sensitive. She keeps worrying that this whole thing will set back her recovery. When Joanna comes back, tell her to apologize to Leona properly."

His tone was dismissive, as if discussing an unreasonable child throwing a tantrum.

James remained silent for a moment before opening his briefcase and withdrawing a document.

"Ms. Candor instructed me that if you didn't believe her, you could review this."

It was not the divorce agreement but a printed official statement.

"According to Ms. Candor's wishes, her capital management firm and all its affiliated companies officially released this statement through official channels to the media and all business partners at ten o'clock this morning.

"It formally notifies the public that Ms. Joanna Candor has initiated divorce proceedings with you."

The smile on Kieran's face shattered instantly. His pupils contracted sharply.

The document was stamped with an official seal, undeniably legitimate. This was the method he excelled at and preferred above all others.

Only now did Kieran realize something. I was not joking.

I truly wanted to divorce him.

His ridiculous stubbornness left me torn between laughter and exasperation, but it lifted the weight that had been pressing on my chest.I glared at him without any real heat."You never take anything seriously!"Seeing my expression soften, Maverick immediately seized the opportunity."Alright, I'll stop teasing."Come on, eat more soup. Being serious doesn't fill your stomach. Getting healthy is what matters."The atmosphere between us seemed to return to that easy rapport we had before, familiar, and comfortable, even tinged with something unspoken. But we both knew some things had changed.Maverick had torn through that veil of pretense in his characteristically shameless way.Yet he had wrapped it all up again in something warmer, something gentler.I could not escape it, but I did not have to respond right away either. What I had not expected was that Maverick was not the only thing I could not escape. There was also Kieran. When I saw him standing at my door in a cris

Kieran eventually signed the divorce agreement and left the hospital room quietly.Perhaps my body was too exhausted from just waking up. After forcing out a few words to Kieran, drowsiness swept over me again. When I woke, dusk had already fallen.Maverick pushed the door open carrying warm soup. He immediately spotted the divorce agreement now signed by both parties but said nothing. He simply opened the bowl and squinted at me."Perfect timing. You're awake."Just made it. Try some."I sipped the soup in small mouthfuls. The warmth chased away some of the cold in my body.Casually, I asked, "The Hostler family fell faster than I expected. Kieran's methods are ruthless, sure, but with the Hostler family's foundation, they shouldn't have crumbled without any resistance."Someone else must have stepped in." The spoon clinked against the bowl."People who consider 200 million as small change. I know very few of those."Maverick, do you really... use the surname, Tiller?"At

Just as Leona sat there bewildered, her lawyer entered the room. He looked at her expressionlessly."Ms. Hostler, this is the official statement Mr. Hostler just released to the public, along with... an internal notice for you."The lawyer slid a printed press release across the table toward the glass. The headline was glaring."Hostler Group Statement: Strongly Condemns Leona Hostler's Criminal Actions, Severs All Ties Effective Immediately."Leona's voice came out hoarse."Impossible... My brother abandoned me? Impossible!"I need to see my brother! I need to see my father! Let me out!"The lawyer adjusted his glasses. His eyes held not a trace of emotion."This is Mr. Hostler and Mr. Hostler Senior's decision. Furthermore, the police have gathered substantial evidence, including records of your drug purchases and financial transactions. Their wish is for you to 'voluntarily' take full responsibility."Turn yourself in."Leona looked as if she had heard the most absurd joke

A nurse emerged from the emergency room and startled at the sight of two men brawling."This is a hospital, not a street fight. Take it outside!"The patient has lost too much blood. She needs massive transfusions. The blood bank is critically low. If either of you are Type O or Type B, come with me to the donation room immediately!"Maverick released Kieran, letting him drop to the floor, and shot him a glare."You better pray she makes it. If anything happens to Joanna, I'll kill you myself."He followed the nurse to the donation room without another word."Pull up the company health records. Find everyone with Type O or Type B blood. Contact them one by one and tell them to get to First Hospital. Anyone willing to donate gets double their year-end bonus. Also..."Maverick's voice faded into the distance. Kieran lay on the floor until Scott hurried over and helped him up.His mind kept replaying Maverick's damning words."Fifteen calls... You didn't answer a single one...”

I turned to leave and encountered a server carrying a tray of drinks. Just as I reached for another glass of champagne, someone intercepted my hand mid-air.Warm water was pressed into my palm. I looked up to find Maverick's reproachful face."No more alcohol. Drink water!"I smiled and playfully touched his face."Yes, my little caretaker. Whatever you say."A low gasp came from behind me, followed by Leona's affected voice."Joanna, what are you..."I frowned and turned around. Leona was becoming insufferable, haunting me like a ghost. For once, Kieran's expression held something resembling human emotion, tinged red with anger."Joanna, we're not divorced yet.""We will be soon if you're willing to sign."I was too tired to deal with these two.Just as I moved to leave with Maverick, Leona deliberately blocked my path. She stepped forward holding two glasses of champagne, her face full of false contrition."Joanna, what happened earlier was too selfish of me."Let me toa

"Joanna, this is the fifth time Mr. Chase has invited you to meet and discuss things this week."You're still not going to see him?"I took the glass of warm water Maverick handed me and swallowed the pills in one gulp."See him? And then what?"Watch him scrutinize me like I'm a quarterly report? Listen to him 'analyze' our nonsense marriage like it's a project post-mortem? Then work with him while he kindly plans to 'process' our divorce agreement?"That robotic, businesslike attitude of his makes me sick. I'm not going to humiliate myself by throwing myself at him anymore."I set down the glass and took a deep breath."Anyway, there's no avoiding Friday's reception."When the time comes, we'll sign whatever needs signing and sever whatever needs severing. One clean break. He can go his way, I'll go mine."He can be Mr. Chase. I'll be Ms. Candor."The sunlight warming my skin made me drowsy. Just before closing the bedroom door, I pulled a bank card from my bag and handed i
