The rest of the week went on well, mostly because Nick and i have been doing things together.Eating together and most of the time he spend in my office.

Lorry landed back from Geneva Friday morning looking like a man who'd slept exactly four hours and regretted every minute of the flight. He walked straight into the debrief without so much as a "good morning," dropped his briefcase on the table, and said, "Show me."

Nick pulled up the Locate model on the main screen without missing a beat.

Lorry wrote to every office that would open a letter, called every contact he had, and was told politely by each of them that the palace did not discuss its household. On the fourth morning, he stopped asking and bought two plane tickets.Nick didn't argue. He packed one small bag, and, after a moment's thought, folded a piece of paper into his jacket pocket. The capital was bright and cold when they landed. A driver took them through wide streets lined with pale stone, past flags in a color Nick recognized, sky blue and white, and up a long hill toward a gate so tall it seemed to have been built by people who expected to be looked up at.Two guards in dress uniforms stood in front of it. They did not move when the car stopped."State your business" said the taller one."We'd like to see the Crown Prince of Valerie" Lorry said."His Highness receives no visitors""We're not visitors. We're here about a friend""His Highness is recovering""We know. We read the news."The guard looked

LORRY'S POV By the second week, I'd stopped checking my phone. That wasn't peace. It was a decision. If I picked it up, I'd call her, and if I called her, I'd hear her voicemail say the same eight words in the same cheerful voice, and I'd throw the phone at the wall. I did, once. It left a dent over the credenza. On Tuesday morning, I snapped at an intern for bringing the wrong coffee. On Wednesday, I sent back a contract three times in one hour. By Thursday, Owen's team had started going out of their way to avoid my office, and the accounting girl who usually said good morning had begun saying nothing at all. At seven that evening, the floor was empty, the sky outside had gone black, and I was still sitting at my desk reading the same line in a report that I'd read twenty times. The door opened without a knock. "You've been here since six this morning" Nick said. "I have work" "You've got a sandwich on your desk that's been there since lunch" "I'm not hungry" "Lorry" "Wha

LORRY'S POVHer phone went to voicemail on the first try.It went to voicemail on the second, and the fifth, and the fifteenth. By midnight I'd stopped counting. I sent texts instead. *Where are you. Please call me. I just want to hear you're alright.* Each one sat on the screen with a single gray tick beside it, never turning blue.I didn't sleep. At six, I was in the office before the cleaners had finished the floor. Her door was shut. I opened it.Everything was where she'd left it. The laptop was closed on the desk. i looked around abd all i could have was flashes of how our friendship started abd the things we've done together. Things that i don't think I'll be able to forget. The office still smells like her, like she would pop up behind me and challenge me like she alwats did. The smell that made my heart ache because I'm furious at the possibility of losing her.I scann the whole office and on the corner of the desk, tipped on its side, was the straw hat Nick had brought her.

AMARA'S POVMarcus didn't say a word until the car had cleared the last of the reporters. They ran after us for two blocks. One man hung onto the side mirror until a guard pried his fingers loose. When the street finally opened, Marcus took a corner too fast, glanced at the rearview mirror, and let out a long breath."Are you hurt""No""You're shaking""I'm angry""That's fair enough""Who took that photo" I said. "It was the palace steps. The day I came home. I was wearing the same coat""We're tracing it""And?""The account that sold it to the paper is a burner. Same pattern as the photograph they sent you which is also Same pattern as the message""So it's them?""It's them""They told the whole country I'm marrying my own brother" I said, and heard how ridiculous it was, and started laughing in a way I didn't like. "That's what they went with. That's their big move""It's not a joke, Amara""I know it isn't""They've put your face on every screen in the country""I can see that

NICK'S POVOn Tuesday evening, after everyone had gone home, I went down to the security office and asked Owen's team for the lobby footage from the day the Prince of Valerie visited."What for" one of them asked."Insurance?""yes...Insurance""Something about a visitor log. I just need to see it"He shrugged, pulled it up, and left me alone with a screen, a cold coffee, and the folded piece of paper in my jacket pocket. The footage was grainy but clear enough. The prince walked in, flanked by four men in dark coats. My father stepped forward to greet him. I could see myself at the back of the group, trying to look like I belonged. I let it play until the man I was looking for turned toward the camera.Square jaw, short hair, wire behind his left ear.I paused the frame and opened a second window with the camera outside our building from the previous Friday. Amara's black car. Two men beside it.Same jaw. Same haircut. Same man.I pulled up a third frame, then a fourth, comparing the

NICK'S POVI came back on Monday with a tan, a straw hat, and more energy than any sane person should have at nine in the morning.Nobody in the office looked up when I walked in. A guy from accounting said "Welcome back" without turning his head. I took off the hat, put it on again, and decided I'd give them a minute.Lorry was standing outside his office with a coffee."Look at you" he said."Rested""Tanned""Rested and tanned""Did you finish the book you took""I read the first page""Of course you did""Did you miss me""The work missed you""That's the nicest thing you've ever said to me" I said, and went straight to Amara's door. She was at her desk, hair clipped up, typing fast. She glanced up and smiled before she'd even finished the sentence."Nick""Back from the dead""You look great""I brought you something" I said, and set a paper bag on her desk. "Open it"She pulled out the hat. It was straw, enormous, with a plastic parrot glued to the brim and three feathers that d
