Chapter 3

Author: Ophelia
After I left the hospital, I dropped off part of my luggage at the Northern Pack's liaison station. Only then did I go home.

When I opened the door, Charles was already back.

Annie was standing in the living room like she was the lady of the house.

"Lilith, there aren't enough slippers. You'll have to wear disposable ones for now."

I looked down. The slippers I always wore were on Annie's feet.

Charles had bought those for me.

The slippers were obviously too big for her. Her feet slid around in them, and they flapped against the floor with every step.

But she kept walking back and forth in front of me in them, as if she was afraid I might miss it.

On the other side of the living room, Charles sat with a few friends, going over the defense plans for the pack’s territory.

A large map of the territory was spread out on the table in front of them. They were talking and laughing, as if they hadn’t even noticed I was home.

I didn’t say anything. I bent down and put on the disposable slippers.

The second I stepped into the living room, a thick smoky smell hit me in the face.

My nose started to itch right away. I sneezed three times in a row, and it got harder and harder to breathe.

On the coffee table sat a big plate of freshly grilled sausages, covered in pine spice and smoked chili.

Annie loved that flavor. I was severely allergic to the spices in it. Charles knew that perfectly well.

He finally noticed me, but all he did was push the plate closer to Annie and say, without much interest:

"Annie actually has an appetite for once. Just put up with it until we're done."

I covered my nose. My voice came out muffled. "Can you take it outside first? I can barely breathe."

Charles's face darkened.

"It's just the smell of food. It's not as bad as you're making it sound."

With that, he ignored me and went back to talking with his friends.

Annie picked up the plate and took a bite of sausage right in front of me, on purpose.

I couldn't hold it in anymore. "Then how long am I supposed to put up with it?"

The conversation stopped. Charles turned his head, impatience already written all over his face.

"Two hours, tops. You can go rest in your room. There's no need to hang around here."

"I'm severely allergic to pine spice. You know that."

"That's your problem."

His voice turned colder. "Don't ruin everyone's night over something this small."

The room went awkward.

Charles's friends exchanged looks. One of them tried to smooth it over.

"Lilith, why don't you go lie down in the bedroom for now? We'll be done soon."

I gave a quiet answer and went into the bedroom.

The door had barely closed when I heard muffled laughter outside.

"Why are you being nice to her? Didn't you see Charles can't even be bothered with her?"

"I just think she's kind of pitiful."

"What's pitiful about her? She's a stray. She's lucky an Alpha even looked her way."

"And she always acts like she's the victim. I can't stand it."

Someone else laughed. "No kidding. I've never seen anyone who can take as much as Lilith."

"She does whatever Charles says. Even if he kicked her out, I bet she couldn't bring herself to leave."

The laughter rose and fell, and Charles never said a word to stop them.

I looked at the time on my phone. Tomorrow was Monday.

The day I was due to report to the Silvermoon Pack in the North was the day after.

I pulled out the rest of my things, checked my ID and appointment papers one more time, and opened the bedroom door with my suitcase.

The laughter in the living room stopped dead.

Charles looked at my luggage, and his face went dark.

"Lilith, do you really have to make this into a whole thing? We didn't take the food out, and now you're running away from home?"

Annie got to her feet right away, her eyes red, her voice hurt.

"It's all because of me that Lilith's upset. Don't go. I'll leave right now."

She started toward the door, but Charles shot up and stopped her.

"Stay put." He looked at me coldly. "If she wants to go, let her go."

His friends finally lost their patience too, and they started laying into me one after another.

"It's just the smell of food. Can't you just stay in your room? Why do you have to ruin it for everyone?"

"She really thinks this is her house? Like anyone here cares what she says."

"No wonder she grew up a stray. She doesn't even know how to act around people. Who could put up with someone like that?"

My fingers clenched so hard my nails nearly dug into my palms.

I swallowed the bitterness rising in my throat and slowly turned to look at Charles. I hoped he would say even one word for me.

But he only stared at me, his face dark and cold.

"Lilith, if you walk out that door today, don't ever come back."

Even now, he still thought I was just throwing a tantrum. He thought that if he threatened to cut me off, I would bow my head and say sorry like I had countless times before, and come right back to him like a good girl.

Suddenly, I smiled.

"Okay."

I didn't argue. I didn't look at Annie again. I walked straight out the door, pulling my suitcase behind me.

Behind me came a deafening crash. Charles had smashed the holographic screen on the table onto the floor.

The expensive device shattered. The flickering display went dark for good.

It was one of the things he valued most.

  • At My Bonding Ceremony, My Fiancé Alpha Mated With My Sister Instead   Chapter 9

A month after the awakening ritual, I could finally control the power inside me with a steady hand. The strange energy that had once frightened me didn't scare me anymore.I learned to recognize the senses my bloodline had passed down, and I slowly began to understand some of the ancient symbols in my ancestors' records. The Guardian told me that a true awakening doesn't happen the moment the ritual ends. It happens when a person learns to carry their own power and decides how to use it.I thought I was slowly getting there.Early one morning, I went alone to the highest stone platform in the ancestral land. The valley was wrapped in a thin mist, and the trees in the distance came into focus as the morning light grew. I set the family token my brother had left me on the edge of the platform and gently ran my fingers over its worn pattern. After my brother died, I thought I had lost the last person I could lean on.Later, I made Charles that person. I believed that as long as he was the

I hadn't planned on paying any more attention to what happened in the Shadow Pack. But the investigation into Annie drugging me had become an official case. The records involved my health and my family's rights, so the Elder Council needed to confirm some of the facts through alliance channels. After the Guardian asked what I wanted, I agreed to hand over my medical records and my account of what happened that day.I didn't need to go back in person. And I wasn't going to exaggerate anything just to see Annie punished. All I had to do was tell them what had happened. The investigation moved quickly.Annie had known all along that I reacted badly to sleeping herbs, but she still gave me a drink she had tampered with. Afterward, she tried to make it sound like an accident. She claimed she only wanted me to sleep a little longer and had no idea it could cause serious harm. But my medical records, the source of the herbal mixture, and the statements of the people involved slowly pieced tog

The day after the awakening ritual, I started training under the Guardian's direction. My new power didn't make me unstoppable overnight. If anything, I had to learn all over again how to control it.But I wasn't in a hurry. In the past, I was always in a rush to prove myself. I was always in a rush to make Charles see everything I gave, to become the mate who could make everyone happy. Now, I could finally spend my time on myself, without worrying that someone would be upset by my choices. After training one day, the Guardian told me that Charles had reached the outer edge of the ancestral land and requested a meeting.I wiped the sweat off my forehead and was quiet for a moment."He knows I'm here?""Yes. He wants to see you."I nodded, but I didn't agree right away."I'm not seeing him for now."The Guardian didn't push. He only reminded me, "You have the right to decide when you see anyone. This is your family's land. It doesn't belong to anyone else."That made my heart feel warm.

The ancestral land was even quieter than I remembered. As I climbed the stone steps, ancient buildings lined both sides. The names of generation after generation of my people were carved into their walls.I used to believe I would only find the courage to come here with my brother beside me.Now he was gone, and I had to finish the path he never got to walk with me.The Guardian led me into a stone chamber.Records left by every generation of my family filled the room. In the center stood a stone altar carved with the moon mark."Your family once held a special bloodline power."The Guardian told me, "A true awakening is something only you can complete."I was stunned.I had read those same words in the journal my brother left behind. But in all my years with the Shadow Pack, I had slowly tied my worth to how Charles treated me.I believed that as long as he accepted me and protected me, I could get my strength back, and my family's dignity along with it.Hearing the Guardian say it ou

By the time Charles opened the box, I was already on my way to the ancestral land.It was the place my family had guarded for generations. Every member of our bloodline was meant to face it one day. When my brother was still alive, he promised me that when I was ready, he would go back with me and watch me complete my awakening ritual. But then my brother died. Our pack fell apart, and the people who had once been our family scattered in every direction. To hold on to the last alliance we had, I came to the Shadow Pack and accepted my engagement to Charles.Fifteen years had passed. I finally understood how much of my life I had wasted waiting. The scenery outside the car window kept slipping away behind me.This time, Charles wasn't by my side. I could take care of myself.Back at the Shadow Pack's ceremony grounds.Charles's face was getting darker by the second."What is this supposed to mean?"No one answered.Annie stood beside him, her eyes a little red. "Maybe she just can't acc

  • At My Bonding Ceremony, My Fiancé Alpha Mated With My Sister Instead   Chapter 4

Only after his friends' laughter had died down did he swear under his breath, yank the door open, and go after me.But the hallway was empty. The elevator was already on the ground floor, and even my scent had been carried off by the night wind.Charles's childhood friend sensed something was off and asked carefully:"Charles, want me to go bring Lilith back? It's late. It's not safe for her to be out alone."Charles stared into the dark night, irritated for reasons he couldn't explain. He had never imagined I would actually dare to walk out with my bags.In the past, no matter how far he went, I had always given in.This time, he took it for granted that I just wanted him to come coax me.He let out a cold laugh, and the certainty came back into his face. "Bring her back for what? Give it three days. She'll come crawling back on her own.""But didn't you two agree to seal the bond next week?""If she misses it, that's on her."Charles picked up his phone, completely unconcerned. "If s
